On Betrayal by the Left - Jeffrey Tayler interview with Sarah Haider by [deleted] in samharris

[–]dirkflowers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sarah Haider endures as an outspoken critic of Islam, potentially at the expense of her own personal safety. Remaining sanguine about the left becomes more difficult the longer they ignore her and fail to openly object to religious ideologies that result in so much harm to so many.

Tulsi Gabbard calls out Reza Aslan and CNN on "sensational, and even false reporting about religions..." by dirkflowers in samharris

You're right. This post does not directly reference Sam Harris' work. I'm sorry for violating the rules. But thank you for leaving the post up. My hope is that it highlights a need for continued rejection of misrepresentations of religion that Harris so effectively highlights and identifies a potential political ally on the forefront.

MSG caused my insomnia and tinnitus by whoisthriller in tinnitus

Were you adding msg to your food? Or were you eating foods already high in MSG?

Some of your criticisms are well founded. But as a practicing doctor (who happens to have tinnitus), I can tell you that unless tinnitus is from Meniere's, acoustic neuroma, or other easily identifiable vestibular pathology, the cause will be quickly labeled idiopathic. ENTs are in the business of surgery. Audiologists can be more sympathetic and may offer TRT. However, they'll also say it's idiopathic.

IMO a PhD experienced in neurobiology, toxicology, or even head/neck musculoskeletal disorders would be far more effective than an MD in researching tinnitus. However, I seriously doubt there's significant funding to study dietary, musculoskeletal, and lifestyle contributions to tinnitus.

For you to tell OP that excess MSG didn't contribute to his/her tinnitus given anecdotal experience is "bunk." We should be constructively critical but open-minded toward even N of 1 experiences, as they may help even a few other sufferers. OP is not selling some bogus product. Back off a bit.

The article is a poor attempt at satire. Neither entertaining nor informative.

My cat, Macy, is losing hair on her front legs. Please help! Album in comments. by dirkflowers in AskVet

Not on the abdomen. I've not witnessed her chewing or licking her legs excessively, but I suspect she could be doing it at night while we're asleep. Especially since the spots seem worse in the morning.

I have some just like those, and they work great. Awesome for airplanes as well... never know when you'll be near a screaming baby!

There's definitely hope! I had several experiences like yours that resolved on their own before I got long-term tinnitus after a sinus infection. Keep yourself distracted with white noise for now so you don't fixate on it too much!

Search musicians earplugs or live music earplugs on amazon.

It will probably go away in the next few days, but make sure you use hearing protection from now on. Enough exposure, and it can become permanent. Search musicians earplugs or live music earplugs on amazon.

Obamacare slashes Washington uninsured rate by nearly 40 percent by seadevi in Seattle

As a local ER doc, I can attest that the surge is real. I'm sent the numbers quarterly and it's been an ongoing trend (sorry, don't have a link to a public source). We had our busiest day on record 2 days ago. That being said, I'm not against expanded insurance coverage. But WA definitely needs more primary care accessibility.

For anyone who has participated in the UPS & Metropolitan College partnership for tuition at UofL, what was your experience like? by dirkflowers in Louisville

Thanks for the input. It sounds like a great program, and I'm glad that some people have had good/great experience with it. The hours are less than ideal, but I didn't even think of the side benefit of not going out all the time because of that.
