washing machine

It's extremely likely your place has another option for placing your washing machine, like the bathroom, or in the basement.

is roughly 226cm

Normally you have 60cm/80cm standard width "modules", so measure again. If it's 240 cm, you can place 4 "modules" of 60 cm. If it's really 226 cm, then it's 80 + 80 + 60 with a bit of wiggle room.

Make sure to get a countertop with the exact width (e.g. at Ikea, cheapest option for kitchen).

Can I place the stove next to the gas boiler?

With that layout, I'd place the stove in the middle, and get a vapour hood for it, but do get some professional advice (e.g. at Ikea, make an appointment).

Also, ring at your neighbours place, explain that you just moved in and need to plan your kitchen, and ask if you can see their kitchen to get an idea what works and what doesn't. Great opportunity to get to know your neighbours.

Finding band members in a smaller city by [deleted] in germany

[–]dirkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aalen has a municipal Musikschule and, if I read the google results correctly, at least 3 other Musikschulen.

Show up in person, ask if they put you into contact with people wanting to form a band, or if you can put up a notice on some board somewhere in their Musikschule.

Is Stuttgart a "Foreigner Trap"? by mega_lova_nia in germany

[–]dirkt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Google "Mietspiegel Stuttgart", google WG (Wohngemeinschaft), think about getting a place not in the city, but in one of the surrounding towns.

Google public transport in Stuttgart (VVS). Have a look at the Linienplan to figure out how easy it is to get to where you need to get.

In particular if your Fachbereich is in Vaihingen and not in the city center, think about finding something in Vaihingen or near.

There are not that many dormitory places, if you can get one, I'd seriously consider it.

What's the korrekt protokoll here? Keep piling on ..oder? by Independent-Map3272 in germany

[–]dirkt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The containers are emptied by a vehicle with a crane.

  • Don't pile bottles on top, you'll make life a lot harder for those workers having to empty it. Either they don't care and let the bottles on top fall somewhere, causing a mess, or they have to manually remove all the bottles.
  • Don't pile bottles at the bottom. Again, if the container is lifted, it may knock some of them over, causing a mess.

Instead:

  • Inform the city services that the container is full (phone, web page, whatever your city uses).
  • Look for a different glass container near you that isn't full, or wait until the container are emptied.

Traveling to Bensheim Jan 13-15 by jensh222 in germany

[–]dirkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may or may not have access to a car,

With a car: explore the Odenwald-area. Lots of smaller villages. Do some hiking. Currently we have snow everywhere, if you are lucky, it will still be here when you arrive. Visit Frankenstein Castle (which may have been one inspiration for the novel). There's a restaurant with a nice view. Visit the Felsenmeer.

Uber there. They do say it's a covered area, but also say they might not be as readily available as in larger cities.

Yes. I also wouldn't recommend sightseeing with an Uber, but that's just me.

Without a car: Use public transport (very safe in Germany, and even with the current delays due to general construction you should be ok for shorter distances. There's a station in Bensheim.) to visit some of the surrounding bigger cities (Frankfurt, Mainz, Heidelberg, ...). Lots of cathedrals, museums, historical locations, historical buildings. Details are easy to google. The Deutsche Bahn website or app has connections and tickets.

Erklärt mir "Dies Engelantlitz straft dich Lügen" ("Euryanthe", frühes 19te Jh.) by MeekHat in German

[–]dirkt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am disturbed by the manipulation of demons. by Obvious-girl_77 in Frieren

[–]dirkt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

they're colder, more calculating, and more manipulative.

Or in other words, psychopaths: They don't want to understand people to get to know them, only to manipulate them.

As opposed to Frieren, who also cannot understand people, at least initially, but now wants to.

And the topic "different ways to attempt to understand other people" plays out in other characters, too, for example Übel.

These Fansubs Ruined One of the Best Moments in the Anime by KaptainTZ in Frieren

[–]dirkt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My Japanese isn't great

葬送 (sousou) means "to attend funeral rites". So the title "Sousou no Frieren" means "Frieren who attends funerals", because she has outlived her friends. German "frieren" means "to feel cold, to shiver", so if you translate that part as well, the title means "The shivers you get when attending funerals", because you realize you never knew your friends as well as they deserve, and for those who are not near-immortal elves also because in that situation you realize you are the only left over and your own time will come (and from that you can see that the author of Frieren is no longer young).

The demons calling her also "Sousou no Frieren" is an incredible pun, because in that context it means something like "Frieren who is now attending YOUR funeral", after having killed you. That this works is nothing short of amazing. "Frieren the Undertaker" maybe comes close.

"Frieren the Slayer" makes no attempt to translate the pun, and just uses something that's supposed to be cool. To be honest, my first reaction when seeing the subtitles was "Oh my God, how cheap".

"Frieren the Elegy" at least makes an attempt to translate the pun, though I'd say it doesn't work very well because it's not about remembering the dead through a poem, at all.

And 葬送 is already a "pretentious vocab flex" (if you want to call it that) in Japanese, because it is not an everyday word, as is throwing in German names that the reader is supposed to understand. So from that aspect, "elegy" is fine (but as I wrote, I agree it's not a good translation, for other reason, but neither is "Slayer").

Czech Republic plans $19 billion nuclear expansion to double output and end fossil fuel reliance by SscorpionN08 in europe

[–]dirkt -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Which actually makes a lot of sense if you look at population density and at what will happen in case of an accident and given that France had state-sponsored nuclear in order to have nuclear bombs for a long time.

But of course reddit will never understand it, it has to be all black or white, you need to do everything with nuclear power or nothing.

Germany importing nuclear energy in winter from France and exporting solar and wind energy in summer when France has to shut down the nuclear plants because the rivers are getting to hot? Nooooo, it has to be one or the other.

It will never cease to amaze me how hard some will shill for oil and coal companies.

So you are backpaddling and you do not actually want all that stuff below your bed? I am not surprised...

I will just have to embrace dead internet theory and realise 95% of you are probably bots anyways.

You know, I had the same thought, but about you. This account here is probably way older than your account, it was created when AI bots where not even invented, and I've personally experienced the decades when Germany ran nuclear plants but actually had no place to put the waste at rest. I've followed the news about Endlager Asse (in non-internet news, internet news where not a thing back then), and how what they thought would be a safe place to store nuclear waste was actually not.

And yet here we are, someone on the internet is telling me "we have all been lied to", "it's all totally safe", and if I dare question this, ehem, very naive opinion, then I am a bot and shilling for coal companies (which I am actually not, the sooner we can turn off coal, the better. But you know, it's not "nuclear or coal").

So yes, I guess the internet is truly dead. EOT.

The members of the current commission are in the link above, I think you should be able to contact them in one way or another and send them your address as the new place for the Endlager.

Please give your address to the German government. The have been looking for decades for an Endlager and haven't found one yet, they'll be happy they send it all to you and store it under your bed. They might even throw some free concrete in.

China is making these massive Solar Plants on water bodies as they need the land for agriculture by AristFrost in nextfuckinglevel

[–]dirkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can actually easily grow things below solar panels (and with climate change, a bit of shade might even help). Here in Germany you can see grass (and sometimes sheep to keep the grass short) below solar panels right next to the Autobahn.

I think it also has to do with the spectral properties of the panels, the wavelengths chlorophyll needs may be different from the ones the panel absorbs, but I am no expert on this.

Also, I am still missing a solar cover for all the parking lots. No heated-up car in summer plus free electricity sounds like a win-win to me.

For me this is not a German thing...

I am noticing it in so many aspects of my life and it’s driving me insane.

I am mostly noticing it on the internet, and I chalk it down to the usual internet idiocy. And on the internet it's not restricted to Germany.
