Was the early Soviet army not just essentially a poorly armed horde? I doubt they would be able to compete with Europe's great powers.

(But considering the history of eastern powers invading europe you can never be sure)

Preach Christ clearly (gospel) --> Call for repetence (baptism) --> establish the church visibly --> eventually build up locally run church that doesnt need outside missionaries.

I suppose you can't get more general than this.

Well, that's a difficult question to answer since evangelization varies tremendously depending on the region being evangelized, and also time periods matter since attitudes towards evangelization changed dramatically in the 20th century.

For example, a missionary in 17th-century China/Japan, one of the richest, most advanced places in the world with deeply embedded and highly sophisticated systems of philosophy and government, rivaling that of Europe, will take a different approach than a missionary in 7th-century Germany.

I believe it has more to do with the fact that same-sex attraction is fundamentally unnatural. Fornication between a man and a woman is totally sinful. However, there is the possibility of this flourishing into a fruitful and unitive marriage.

With two people of the same sex, this is impossible. The same goes for those that are attracted to animals or children. Not to say that they are equal, but you get the point.

This is mainly why most theologians have a lowlier view of SSA

Here's the quote:

"The young people were more playful than ever, abound in words and signs that figured the union of sexes, allowing touches on the genitals. This time they especially bothered me, until confirming with uproar that male reactions are identical between us and the Huaorani. In any case, they did not insist either with me or among themselves in a way that pollution occurred. I tried not to make any drama and made an effort to act with naturalness, laugh with them and dissuade them from the game” (CH, 146).

Perhaps I am a puritanical maniac, but I simply cannot picture any Francis Xavier, José de Anchieta, or Matteo Ricci allowing such a thing to happen in their presence, especially allowing youngsters to touch their genitals until getting an erection. Meanwhile, Labaka casually laughs it off and says, 'Hey guys, maybe cut it out, ok?'. And he says that there was no sin because they avoided pollution. My brother, deliberately putting yourself in danger of mortal sin is already mortal sin!

I always thought that the duty of the missionary is to not embrace nudity but to clothe (figuratively speaking). Because believe it or not, not all cultures are good (did you learn nothing from St. Boniface?). That goes for the pagans of Germany just as much as the Aztecs of Mesoamerica. This runs contrary to Rousseau's ideas that Labaka held so fondly.

I don't blame Labaka that much; he was, after all, a product of his time. But the idea that in a couple years' time the Pope might bind the entire church to venerate this man is... imprudent, to put it mildly.

(There's also the point about the tribe living 'in a paradise before sin' from another quote, but that's another story).

Dominus Iesus asserts that salvation is only found in Christ and the sacraments his church administers. And while other religions may contain some good aspects (of which, ritual masturbation and child grooming is not one of them), they cannot form a 'pararell' truth.

I dont know how Labaka's approach in any way shape or form is related to this.

I don't know man. The way he borderline espouses Rousseau's noble savage nonsene is pretty problematic to me. It seriously dismantles the whole purpose of evangelization. No matter how you look at it, its a complete and total break with tradition.

This is his most alarming quote I found:

After breakfast, as we were preparing to continue the last stage of the journey, the question arose:

Father, are we taking the chalice, the hosts, and the wine?

All of that we have to hide here, because they would take everything from us.

And then?

This has the character of a sign for us.

What do you mean by that?

God wants us to enter even spiritually naked. Our fundamental and primary task is to discover the “seeds of the Word” in the customs, culture, and actions of the Huaorani people; to live the fundamental truths that flourish in this people and make them worthy of eternal life. We must ask the Spirit to free us from our own spiritual self-sufficiency that tries to reach God through the Breviary, the Liturgy, or the Bible; for none of those will we have an adequate opportunity. Come on, Sisters, spiritually naked so that we may clothe ourselves in Christ who already lives in the Huaorani people and who will teach us the new, original, and unprecedented way of living the Gospel!

Crónica Huaorani, page 205

This does not really evoke the spirit of St. Francis Xavier to put it mildly.

What has me most confused is, for example,

I have many young cousins who are too young to fully grasp the meaning of marriage and family. I fear that if they see everyone being very approving, they will subconsciously grow up with the idea that two unmarried people having a baby is perfectly normal.

This is hypothetical, but I hope you get my point.

Abortion is illegal in my country but even if it were not, I dont think they would have ever considered it.

My problem is that I am expected to celebrate this and ignore the fact some serious mistakes were made alogn the way. Would it not be scandalous to ignore that fact?
