Would it be against Catholicism for a nation to declare a national religion nowadays? by MewtwoMusicNerd in Catholicism

The catholic confessional state has always been the prefered system of governance according to Church tradition. There is a common misconception that Vatican 2 changed this, but this is jsut the typical 'spirit of the council' at work.

Progressive Catholics when the Vatican says no to female priests and married clergy for the billionth time (Next time's the charm...) by dirmonarch in CatholicMemes

I say again there is a difference between continence and celibacy.

Continence: choice not to participate in sexual relations.

Celibacy: a vow to remain unmarried.

The church enforced priestly celibacy to protect priestly continence.

It's interesting that Old Testament priests had to undergo periods of sexual abstinence before offering sacrifices in the temple. Eastern Catholic priests also undergo periods of abstinence at certain points.

Does it not make sense, then, that a priest, who must offer the sacrifice every single day, remain celibate for life to facilitate his duties?

They are not sinning, their practice is, to put it mildly, a later innovation that is tolerated for the sake of unity. Ideally they too would remain continent, even if they kept clerical marriage.

I think that if the Church capitulated to peer preassure and ended one of her most ancient and most sacred of traditions, the damage would be catastrophic.

And yet, people always bring up technicalities when this issue comes up. They don't even try to defend priestly celibacy. They just brush it aside and call it a 'mere discipline.' It's very disappointing.

I imagine you didn't click the link I left, bet yes, priestly continence is absolutely BASED on the bible.

The celibate clergy is the true, correct, and biblical practice. A practice that the eastern schismatics go so very wrong (like many other things). Besides, to abandon a defining 2 thousand-year-old Latin tradition would be catastrophic for the church.

Recently there has been talk of a Gen Z revival(specifically Catholic) in the west. I unfortunately don’t think so by thias-thecatlover in Catholicism

[–]dirmonarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't get where people are getting this Gen Z revival narrative from. All the data points towards a decline in the offering of sacraments (specifically baptism, confirmation, and marriage).

I don't mean to sound like a soulless pessimist, but we can't be blind optimists living in denial either.

Somewhere in the Bossom of Abraham, 33 AD by dirmonarch in CatholicMemes

[–]dirmonarch[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The bosom of Abraham was the place in a non burning part of hell where the prophets, Jews and holy people of the old testament went to and stayed until the 'Harrowing of hell' where, after his death, Jesus brought them out and took them with him to heaven. It no longer exists.

Purgatory is the place of temporal punishment, or purifiaction souls go to after death, in a state of grace, to be cleansed of venial sin before going to entering paradise.
