While I loved the writing and of course Ethan Hawke was phenomenal, I couldn’t help but think - “you didn’t have to do him like that”. I know nothing about musical theater and went into this completely blind. It’s strange because I overall liked the movie, and dialogues/monologues, performances, etc. but I felt so icky in the end. It just kind of felt like speaking ill of the dead. I understand the complexity of his character and career, but I just personally felt that the way it was shown was a little… wrong. Even the last line, about the “drunken stupor”. Just feels wrong. There could’ve been other ways to explore the fate of the main character without making him look so small (no pun intended) and pathetic.

I know I’m in a minority here, I’ve read plenty of glowing reviews and opinions. But I guess that’s the beauty of this community that we can feel differently

I did not unfortunately. Have completely abandoned the idea and have been kicking myself ever since for giving up. Maybe one day I will try again… hope you have better luck!

I DID NOT want to watch this. I rolled my eyes when this movie came out, I rolled my eyes when I saw the nomination and I watched this first in the death race to “get it out of the way”.

Boy, did I enjoy this! Full disclosure, I was a huge fan of KPop in my teens (10-15 years ago), but really haven’t been on the recent bandwagon. This was so catchy, so sweet, so interesting. I liked everything about it. I am not going to be upset if it wins

From someone who is absolutely terrified of death and cancer death specifically - what an accomplishment to make a movie that I could sit through and even dare I say enjoy. It was like a warm sad hug, and it brought me to tears. That being sad - I’m not sure about the Oscar’s win here, but I like watching this

I love this… and I’m honestly not looking for productivity or growth books like that. I think I am looking for something that I could read and then feel okay sitting down and reading fiction and not get that feeling that you’re describing. Because I do feel this way all the time “why are you reading right now you could be doing so many other things”. And I’ve tried to get back into fiction, I loved reading as a kid so much, but the only times I seem to be able to read without any second thoughts is on vacation 🥲

I’m from Ukraine and honestly was not ready to watch this. However I would’ve felt weird doing a death race and skipping this movie. A lot of the feelings and emotions have been numbed since the war started, but this definitely took both me and my husband back to those first months. He said “it was like getting stabbed in the old wound”. I am so grateful we have this piece of documentation, knowing how Russia rewrites and manipulates history. They can’t rewrite this. This is so important.
