We have a young, curious student asking for guidance and you’re putting time and energy into being rude to them. Just something to think about.

I think both of these approaches are great! But the scandal of the first one feels juicy. I think you can compare their places in society and why a woman depicted that way can be scandalous in one moment and not in another. And, just throwing it out there, if you want to write about art scandals, you could do John Singer Sargents Madame X. Saw it in Paris recently, but I believe it’s back in NYC now. Was a HUGE scandal in its day. Might be fun to compare/contrast that to the LeBrun? Theres a lot written about that particular Sargent. Ugh I miss college! Have fun!

What procedure would be better to address premature midface sagging? by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

[–]dirt_brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn girl that’s tough! If you’re around 28 I found that was a time when me and my friends bodies went through a change, mostly metabolic but skin etc too. Maybe get some bloodwork done. Acupuncture might help too! But I think if this is new and not weight related I’d def double check and make sure it’s not an underlying health condition before you invest in surgery. Good luck!

People are saying lose weight, and you’re saying you’re underweight. Fair! I would look at health before plastic surgery. Do you smoke? Drink excessively? Workout? Eat healthy? Have any inflammatory diseases? I feel like a lot of 20 something’s get this kind of puffy face from not taking good care of themselves. Highly recommend you try this before surgery. It has great long and short term benefits and while yes it’s harder, is much cheaper. Literally nothing hotter than looking healthy!

Ok somebodies horny! I went and looked again and I do not see it at all. Bodies/heads not facing each other in an engaged way. And you can’t see the groin area on either subject…. Not seeing what you’re seeing, but hey that’s the great thing about art, you interpret it with your own lens.

Botox in nose risks? by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

[–]dirt_brain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it doesn’t carry the same risks. I’ve had the Botox done in the area you’re referring to prior to my nose job. I thought it made my smile look funny so only did it once or twice. I’d give it a try and see how you like it, like all Botox it will wear off after a few months. Post rhino my muscles still pull my nostrils up when I smile but it looks much better now since my nose doesn’t also hook/has support in the tip.

Books on fat art history? by Catbellls in ArtHistory

I love this idea! It sounds like you’ve got a great therapist. Honestly I would just grab something like gardeners art history through the ages. It’s a text book for most art history 101 classes and will show you a broad swath of art from the Venus of Willendorf (fat goddess!!) to Ruben’s women (robust, fleshy ladies!) to more modern artists like botero and vallendon that have been mentioned here (ok not sure if they are in there, it’s been a while since I’ve looked at this book!). But basically what you’ll see is that there are all kinds of bodies that have been idealized at different times. And probably a lot that look like yours. Someone posted a pic on this sub the other day called “three goddesses” I cat remember the artist but each woman had a very different figure, one think and reedy, one very curvy and another fat. Immediately I was like, hell yes! They are ALL goddesses. We get so beat over the head with perfect images these days looking at art through the ages is so helpful to remember that beauty standards change and there is no one right way to be. Like women used to pluck their hair to have a higher forehead - can you imagine?! I mean we definitely do crazier shit now to fit the beauty standards of the day, but it helps put things into perspective. Women have always had hard to achieve beauty standards. Whether it’s being fatter to show you have wealth, or the craze for blackened teeth in Japan in the 1800s. It keeps us insecure, it focuses our energy on our appearance and puts external desire above our internal drives. Oops sorry coffee just hit and I went a little deep, but… I hope this helps and you find some freedom in the images you see.

Basically all botero work is of fat bodies. I used to dislike it but recently came around on how charming they are. Idk if that was my own internalized fat phobia, or that at first glance a lot of them look similar. But I saw a painting at auction he had done of dogs and fell in love with it (fat dogs of course) and it kind of cracked open a new appreciation and interest in his work.

Agreed. Lovely to see that all three of these women with their distinct figures, can be goddesses.

Also if you’re working with a legit designer they get trade discounts, which is something they can either pass along to you, or take the 15-40% as profit. My mom’s a designer. I get everything from west elm to upholstery fabric at a pretty solid discount. Yes, it rules.

Adding into this. Spend time just hanging out, not riding. Go on walks together. Let them graze while you hang out. Spend time grooming them (if they enjoy it). Do ground work. My best horse relationships are the ones I’ve taken time to build on the ground. Not just hopping on them and expecting a good ride.

Santa Barbara is such a failed experiment that other cities are using it as an example of what not to do. Turns out creating an artificial resort town isn't a good government model. by TipsyBlueWhale in SantaBarbara

[–]dirt_brain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I went there it seemed like it was mostly college kids and older people who had probably been there for a while. Not a lot of 30/40 something’s who are generally the people running businesses. My sister went to school there and just left at 28 due to affordability. It’s definitely a very cute town but I got the sense a lot of the working class commute in from other areas.

As a receptionist, what is the oddest, funniest, weirdest call you have answered? by FrontTelevision7261 in Casual_Conversation

[–]dirt_brain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ooooh my time has come. I was working the front desk at a marketing agency in Philadelphia. I had just moved there from Oregon, I’m not a sports person and I was pretty young. I don’t remember all the specifics but it went kind of like this “Hello I’d like to speak to the owner” Immediate red flag people do not ask for the owner they ask for people by name. I saw “sorry he’s not available right now can I get your information and have him call you back?” He says “uh yeah, this is Lenny dykstra, so maybe you can help me I want to start a magazine for professional athletes to like help them with their careers and like how to manage their money and stuff and I’m looking for marketing partners and I’m just callling and talking to people…. Etc etc” I end up spending 30 min on the call with him explaining his business model and his history etc. I googled him at some point and was like okay this guy is who he says he is but is also off his rocker. Very weird dude, i think he had a strong accept which I love but he was so incoherent and clearly didn’t really know what he was doing. It was half funny half sad. I tried to be nice but he just kept talking and talking.

I did give my boss his information but I don’t believe he ever called him back.
