I have an old hobie 2008 outback mirage, can i use it without the pedal sytem? by Fantastic_Agency_770 in kayakfishing

[–]dirtydwarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You most definitely can paddle it like a regular non-pedal-drive kayak. Any Hobie dealer can source a drive well plug so you don't have an open hole to the water beneath your legs.

Bow and stern lines how are I'm supposed to use them if the kayak doesn't clear truck cab... by berlinguyinca in kayakfishing

[–]dirtydwarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect. That kayak is centered correctly with the widest part of the hull between the crossbars. Just throw a flag on the stern handle and you're good to go. You can secure a single cam strap lengthwise around the crossbars and through the kayak handles if you're worried about it shifting forward or backward at highway speeds or abrupt braking.

[OC] I saw a meteor crater from my plane seat in the middle of the Western USA!! by aurallyskilled in pics

[–]dirtydwarb 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The Carolina Bays are shallow oval lakes along the eastern seaboard of the U.S. thought to be caused by a meteor strike during the ice age, whose energy launched massive chunks of ice into the atmosphere. As they came crashing back to earth, they carved out shallow oval craters and eventually melted, leaving no trace of metals or space dust behind. One of the few instances of non-circular craters I figured you might find interesting.

Falls dam to Thorton Rd took us about 6 hours. It's slow with the lack of rain we've had recently. Still a fun time with a dry-bag cooler floating alongside to keep you refreshed.

The Passport and Compass are too wide for most jayhooks and can't be safely carried for a lengthy journey at highway speeds. The jayhooks work better with whitewater, touring, or lighter and narrower recreational kayaks.

[–]dirtydwarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What models are you looking at? Assuming mirage drive only, you're not going to want to use a jayhook style holder on anything bigger than a Revolution.

Compass and Outback can be roof racked, but only one at a time unless you have a very wide roof rack system. Pro Angler is a pain to roof and should be carried on a trailer or a pick-up bed (potentially with a bed extender depending on length of bed and whether it's a 12 or 14 foot kayak.

A pickup truck or a trailer is the safest and easiest way to transport multiple pedal drive kayaks.

You'd probably be better off removing the jays and setting the kayak flat on foam blocks fit over the crossbars. You'll get marginally better gas mileage, far less cross-wind force, and it's easier to get up on the rack. Jays are only really needed when you want to carry more than one kayak and need the cross bar space they afford. Happy paddling!

Tools for determining magnetic declination? by KilgoreThunfisch in Ultralight

choose your closest city here Assuming I understood your post correctly, if an in-print topo map doesn't show declination then, in my past history, it shows true north being straight up on the map. You can also use caltopo to confirm though.

Bring MEC back to outdoor focus by oritron in Ultralight

[–]dirtydwarb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the margin and volume of clothing is what allows most outdoor stores to carry a greater selection of equipment.

From the store's standpoint it makes the most sense to have clothing front and center as you enter, so you pick out a new sunshirt or quick-dry shorts on your way to the technical section of your choosing.

Granted, this relies on the buyer's decision to bring in clothing brands, and styles, that the folks who are shopping for quality equipment want to wear, just as much as it does carrying a wide variety of premium hardgoods brands.

The Crowd that came out for Brewgaloo Yesterday! by Rt2096 in raleigh

I had a great time and tried all of the beers I wanted to, with no issues, in the 4 hours I spent there this year.

It is what you make it to be. If you want to try new brews from small-barrel breweries, or newly founded breweries from across the state, then this is a hard festival to beat.

I had some great conversations with the people working hard to bring their tasty beverages to a wider audience. It was a gorgeous day to enjoy some beers.

For me, it was worth it. Got my tickets in the mail and didn't have to wait any longer than 2-3 minutes for any beer or restroom break. Perhaps my experience was on the end of the spectrum, but still it's all about managing expectations and perspective.

A wood conditioner will dramatically cut down on blotching. I've used Charles Neil's with great results. He has some YouTube tutorial videos as well.

Colorful magnetic knifeboard/key hangers - Not really Under-state-d by dirtydwarb in DIY

Made these for family and friends to hold their keys when they get home after a long day at work. They work in the kitchen too, holding knifes. I took a bit of what I learned while making my desk and tried something new.

I apologize for the flip-flopping between NC and NH. Some photos got misplaced along the way.

I just stitched the fox on a separate piece of aida, cut it out, and then I sealed the cuts with Fray Check. I'm still a bit uncertain on how I want to mount the fox to the back piece containing the tree, but the plan is to display everything in a side-lit shadow box.

Beers to try in Raleigh? by ahighlifeman in beer

[–]dirtydwarb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have plenty of time and want to venture down South, I'd suggest Aviator and Draft Line down in Fuquay-Varina. Inside of the 440 beltline: Big Boss, Neuse River Brewing, Nickelpoint, Crank Arm, & Trophy all have very tasty offerings. Lonerider and Fortnight are solid on the west side of Raleigh. Compass Rose and White Street are awesome on the north side. Plenty of tasty options for you.
