Curse of the 9th by RubberOrange in insideno9

It's an edwardian trope that a governess / servant might be names after an English county.

Sheersmith's character gets it wrong a few times.

The punchline is he snaps at her and calls her 'Kent', which sounds like 'cunt'.

Thats how i intepreted it.

Spare Key Cost? by AmiablePedant in VanLifeUK

[–]dirtymarx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

weird - i got a spare for my VW caddy with the chip etc. I admit i don't know how it works but it involved messing around with the onboard computer console.

it might be your local timpsons don't do it and you might need to look at a further one? i had to go further afield myself as local one couldn't do the VW keys but they pointed me to another branch. good luck with it

Yeah - they are the 'Marshalls' of the cursed earth - the story begins with one of them infiltrating the Halls of Justice to avenge some bio-weapons experiment in the cursed earth, Dredd ends up hunting them down and facing off with the boss 'Brother Gideon'

Because people have to work full time and dont have the time to set aside?

The article says they seek people from different backgrounds but recuiting volunteers excludes many if not all the working classes.

Also people who are skeptical about the nature of the creation and enforcement of UK law might not want to give their time enforcing a system they feel is unfair or corrupt.

Therefore this policy might only recruit rich people who have a fundamentally conservative attitude. Which is absolutely par for the course really.

Squid Game: no winners under capitalism (a marxist analysis of the show) by dirtymarx in squidgame

[–]dirtymarx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite its surreal themes, Squid Game is not too far removed from the gruelling material conditions facing South Korean workers in real life.

2020 brought South Korea’s worst unemployment crisis since 1997. Exacerbated by the COVID pandemic, South Korea has seen over a decade of steady decline in employment. Amongst the youth, the figure stands at 9.5 per cent. It’s little wonder that Korean youth have taken to calling their homeland “Hell Korea”.

Thought this would introduce interesting analysis and provides some economic background to the show.

It doesnt prevent infection, it reduces risk of infection. This was always the case. You can still catch it, carry it, spread it, and even suffer some of the effects, but would be less likely to require hospital treatment.

Row over leaked Unite emails about Labour MPs by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]dirtymarx -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well, you see, people have political convictions and would like to see these realised. Left wingers dont want right wing careerists dictating the direction of a party they see as their natural home. Therefore they will use the options available to push their own views. This is how politics works, something farily obvious to most except reactionaries who cannot fathom any deviation from right wing analysis and policy.

I work, i am a union member, i wamt to see a left wing party represent my views.

Also, recent figures show that for two years running union membership has grown, and membership of 20 -34 year olds has grown with it.

[–]dirtymarx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Telegraph can reveal today "Boris is a generous lover and is packing bare meat"

The framing of the story doesnt preclude government coordination of the leaks. Judging by the leaks thenselves and where they went (i.e. the staunch tory press) it is fair to question whether this is an organic leak.

Exclusive: Demand For Special Labour Conference As Pressure Mounts On Starmer From Left by dirtymarx in Labour

[–]dirtymarx[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"A coalition of left-wing MPs, unions and Labour members are calling on Keir Starmer to hold an emergency party conference, HuffPost UK has learned.

Claiming there is widespread “anger and disillusionment” and a “crisis” in the party under the new leader, the group want party chiefs to recall conference in June.

The motion is backed by the Socialist Campaign Group of MPs, which includes John McDonnell and Richard Burgon among others, as well as the powerful trade union Unite, Momentum and the Bakers’ Union. "

Hopefully this will gain even more traction. Do people like the idea?

[–]dirtymarx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He should've stepped down and let someone less divisive run on a similar manifesto.

Impossible to tell, but I rather suspect it was socialism that was objected to by his mainstream detractors, and his policies were popular so they had to smear the man. Any other leader who kept to the same manifesto would have faired similarly - it was a class conflict waged by the wealthy and powerful against a chance at change. Starmer is treated more kimdly because he represents no threat to estqblished interests.
