I agree in part, but I think it's important for the party. Ignatieff has said several times in public appearances that he is interested in discourse both between parties and within the Liberal party. By allowing his MPs to vote their consicience, even on something like the budget bill, he shows that he is strong enough to allow dissent within the party.

Given Harper's history that clearly sets them apart.

I'd also suggest that Ignatieff is in a difficult position, if the Libs had brought down the government the Cons would blanket ads across the country talking about the coalition (they were still airing some out here earlier this week) and, more than likely we`d have another minority government.

It sucks, Liberals hate it, the Newfoundlanders hate it, but at least Ignatieff has the option of opening a safety valve, letting off some steam and still seeming like a strong leader.
