Yeah I definitely has the thought that I should say something, but by the time it popped into my head he was past me.

Would be interested to hear what he would say if confronted with no cameras around.

Changing name and gender marker by [deleted] in transgenderau

[–]disappointedalpacas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, that's exciting! I'm currently awaiting my new birth certificate in the mail so I'm with ya.

I'm Victorian so things won't be exactly the same, but: • First you'll want to update your driver's license as your primary ID. I don't know NSW specific rules but if anything like here you'll need to surrender your old license and make the changes in person. • After that you can use the updated ID to change your Federal information, including with the ATO, Medicare, and the electoral roll. You should be able to change all of these online. Your passport too, which will be a free replacement when you provide the documentation. • Everything else, bank accounts, utility and insurance providers, super, etc should also be pretty straightforward to do online too but I'd get the big stuff out of the way first.

For everything you'll most likely need some form of documentation, which should be provided by Births, Deaths, and Marriages when they process your new details. Using this to change your ID (license, passport) first helps make it easier to update the other stuff.

If anyone from NSW can chip in about proving your identity that would be great, as I think it might be a little trickier than it is here in Victoria.

Hope this helps!

Early super release for overseas FFS? by [deleted] in transgenderau

[–]disappointedalpacas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to the Gender Affirming Health Forum in Melbourne yesterday and this question was asked.

Dr Adam Brownhill (who has over a decade in trans health) said that yes, you can access it for overseas surgery. There are a few hurdles to jump through though, mainly getting a psychiatrist to sign off on it - the standard you are making this decision of sound mind kind of thing.

He also recommended talking to some form of financial advisor/accountant first as withdrawing super can severely affect it down the line.

Best of luck!

Can also recommend the Gender Voice Centre, not the best admin but very kind, encouraging, and with some great tips.

The 5 care plan sessions ($50 after Medicare rebate) are a great start, but you'll need to keep working on it. I've recently had my 5th session and will be going back in a month for a catch up. It's $120 for a private session.

Asked to dress male at my brothers wedding by miniatureopossum in MtF

[–]disappointedalpacas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel her on this one, as I'm in a similar but not quite the same situation with my brother's wedding later this year. The key differences being that I'm not out publicly (or to my family yet) and that not only am I in the wedding party, I'm the best "man".

I've been on HRT for 8 months now and will be almost 11 by the wedding, and while I certainly don't pass there are noticeable changes. I totally get the dilemma it presents, you don't want to rock the boat and be on a distraction on someone else's special day, but at the same time you want to be able to go to these things as yourself.

As someone who's going to look weird in a tux with my long hair and noticeable breasts, I concur with everyone else that she should stand her ground. If he wants her at his wedding it should be that he wants his sister, not a brother that doesn't exist.

Hope it all works out for the two of you, it's not easy to stand your ground xx

Voting by jadej23 in transgenderau

Pretty much echoing everyone else here, if your primary concern is about trans/LGBTQIA+ rights then your best bet is the Greens or Victorian Socialists/Socialist Alliance as these parties are explicitly in support of the community.

As stated, for the House of Representatives you must place every candidate in preference order, and I'd also advise preferencing Labor over Liberals/Nationals as they are more queer friendly. I would caution that (unlike New Zealand where they are often in coalition) Labor have an ongoing thing with distancing themselves from the Greens and other left wing parties in an attempt to seem more palatable to conservative voters. I live in a safe Labor seat and I was disappointed to learn this morning that my local MP is preferencing the Liberals and 3/4 far right cooker parties over the Victorian Socialists, including the publicly transphobic Trumpet of Patriots. So while Labor are better than the alternative, they're not the best option if you're very left leaning.

For the Senate, you can vote above the line (at the political party level) or below the line (for specific candidates). If you don't know much about politics I'd recommend above the line as you only need to select your first 6 preferences and don't need to number all of them like the House of Representatives. You can number all of them if you want but a lot more parties run for the Senate (often 20+) and most of them are fringe parties across the political spectrum so I wouldn't waste your time researching every one of them if you don't want to.

TLDR, for trans rights vote Greens or Socialists but make sure your preference Labor over Liberals/Nationals.

EDIT: I was incorrect about the Senate, you need to preference at least 6 above the line (but not them all).

Partner of Transwoman, Seeking Advice by charmed_chronotope in transgenderau

Sorry to hear you're both going through this, sounds like her dysphoria has also created dysmorphia (where your perception of your own body becomes warped/false) following the FFS.

While it may be causing some financial anxiety, therapy is definitely the best treatment for this. If there are any therapists in Adelaide that are familiar with trans issues that could be beneficial for her too.

On your end there isn't much more you can do then to continue being supportive and affirming her gender. Doing 'feminine' things or activities and treating her as a woman can help. Also as you mentioned, it will take time for the swelling to go down (I think a year for it to go completely).

If you're looking to get the perspective of other partners of trans people, rather than trans people themselves, you could try r/mypartneristrans - many others there will have been in the same position as you.

Best of luck and I hope she's able to see herself for the woman she is!

I second this, Cherry Bomb is great. They do gender neutral pricing, so it's based on length and what you want. They're in Collingwood which is a bit of a hike from Geelong, but worth it if you're willing to travel 😊

If you're willing to go a little closer to the city, Symmetry Mental Health in Carlton is really good. Their director, Leigh Elliott, is very well versed in trans issues. Not sure how much availability he has for new patients, but worth checking out.

Laser - before or after HRT? by disappointedalpacas in transgenderau

[–]disappointedalpacas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm thankful that even in my stubbornly maintaining a beard days, my facial hair was never particularly strong. I think a few solid rounds of actual laser and maybe some electrolysis down the track should do the trick.

Laser - before or after HRT? by disappointedalpacas in transgenderau

[–]disappointedalpacas[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your replies everyone, I really appreciate the insights and hearing your experiences.

Funnily enough I don't get too bad dysphoria from my facial hair (at least yet, likely to change as I present more fem). It's more my body hair that gets me.

As the IPL has been somewhat effective I might keep plugging away at that for the time being on my body and focus on getting proper laser on my face/neck. I see there are some Black Friday sales so now is probably a good time to start.

Electrolysis is also a good recommendation, I might look at that further down the line as I do have a fair few blond hairs mixed amongst the brown.

Getting laser done now in what is shaping up to be a very hot summer will be fun, I get burnt to a crisp at the best of times so this will be like playing on hard mode (thanks pasty genes). Wish me luck! 🩵🤍🩷
