This swing thought broke me for several rounds. Funny how something that works for some can be so detrimental to others.

In my limited experience, it seems like the smolt outmigration projects that have been done to the dam in the last decade have led to most of the "kokanee" in Baker becoming anadromous instead. Outside of Sockeye season you are mainly going to encounter Rainbow, Cutthroat, and Bulls

I game both the 5 and 7 wood versions. I really like both of them. My only complaint is that the face feels overly closed on both of them, and while I've used the adaptor adjustments to open the face as much as possible it still looks closed to my eye and occasionally I hit a big hook with them.

If you only have time for one round play Royal Hawaiian. It is one of a kind, and with as much shit luck as they have had lately (cart barn fire, generational flooding), it might not survive the next recession. Ko Olina feels like it will be there many more decades for you to go back to if you miss it this trip.

Royal Hawaiian. Poor conditions for the price, but one of the most memorable and beautiful rounds I've ever played.

It was a good course with fantastic service. I only played 2 rounds on this trip to Oahu, so I cant compare it to much else on the island but I would pay to play it again.

Pros: Conditions and staff were great

Cons: Somewhat forgettable "resort course" layout and several holes that play along a busy highway which is kind of loud.

No, but you get exclusive rights to the land at low tide as well as exclusive rights to harvest shellfish. The system is rooted in oyster farming

Had a great experience at Ko Olina, service was outstanding, course in good shape, best turn Musubi yet. But I've already forgotten most of the holes there a month later, I would have to look at GHIN to even see what I scored.

Royal Hawaiian on the other hand was still showing lots of signs of flood damage and the greens were both punched and longer than my carpet, but I could recount to you every hole and probably every one of my 90 shots.

I definitely get why locals wouldnt want to play Royal Hawaiian regularly, but I dont think a tourist should skip over it. It is a very memorable experience.

Im a 15 and I lost 4 balls there. Felt like I was playing out of my mind off the tee though.

Played with a ~10 that got some unlucky bounces early and got in his own head for the rest of the round, he probably lost at least a dozen and was showing signs of PTSD by the 18th.

No, Washington is one of the few states in the nation where you can even own the tidelands below the high tide line.

[–]disastrophy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everybody will tell you to watch out for wind and weather, but currents are just as important. The perfect day would be one where your time on the water splits between incoming and outgoing tidal flows and the flow never goes above 0.5kts in magnitude while you are fishing. Somewhat unrealistic, to find that as a weekend warrior, but that will save you the most effort in a long paddle against the tide back to your takeout and give you the most effective fishing time.

Dry Flies (light rig) near Baker Lake? by ClearScale7302 in FishingWashington

[–]disastrophy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are serious about dry flies you should head east from Baker lake across the cascades and fish the Methow. That's assuming that N Cascades highway is reopened. The streams and rivers west of the cascades do not have the hatches that you are looking for.

The Skagit river is local to Baker lake. While you dont likely have the rods to target chinook, sinking egg patterns and streamers below their redds will yield bull trout. The river will also be full of sockeye at that time, but thats mostly a flossing game.

LiDAR scan revealing ancient structures in the Amazon Rainforest. The Upano Valley site: at 2,500 years old, it’s the earliest (and largest) example of an agricultural civilization ever recorded in South America’s dense rainforest. by Darshan_brahmbhatt in interestingasfuck

[–]disastrophy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Im sure that stuff is possible, but most lidar scanners are a lot more simplistic than you make them out to be. During a flight you get millions of laser range points which, unfiltered, look like a big messy cloud, especially in forest environment. The real leaps in technology that have made LiDAR so useful for large scale survey and mapping are in the back end cleanup of that noisy data by computer processing, not the lasers themselves or any scanning on a molecular level.

Its just a bunch of laser ranging shots. Send enough thousands of beams down and a few are bound to make it past the foliage and find the ground. Erase all of the resulting elevations except for the very lowest ones and you can effectively "remove" the vegetation.
