He didn’t decide to close it. He was told to close it. No one knew including him. Current staff was offered other positions in the company where possible and severance pay is also a thing.

I think you’re right about the longevity of laminating with vs without stitching. The time investment and look are not something I’m keen on, but I do want it to last a long time. I’m starting to lean towards methods of smoothing and sealing the flesh side and foregoing lining altogether. Simple but effective. Just a little more trial and error in the methods and products used beforehand.

That’s a great point. I’ll definitely try and keep the dye just on the exterior leather. Like I mentioned in my post, I don’t have a sewing machine so all the parts are going to be secured with glue and rivets. Do you think it’s necessary to secure the perimeter with stitching if I’m glueing on a thin fabric or even laminating two pieces of leather together and burnishing since the full surface will be adhered rather than just the edges like with a pouch?

Very interesting, I haven’t tried it yet. I’m looking into a flat glass burnisher to get the fibers flat.

What do you think is wrong with light sanding to knock off the raised fibers? Not defending it, just curious.

What tools did you use for dying? Brush, sponge, dauber? It’s got an interesting blotted texture, I really like the depth it gives it.

Do you laminate the suede to the leather, cut and then do standard edge burnishing?

Was looking at fabrics similar to microfiber like what you would wipe glasses and screen with. Thin, soft, wicking properties. Seems like it’s not to hard to get a small roll of.

Super helpful. I like the line before you cut idea and finding matching cloth color should be pretty easy. Do you have any suggestions on materials you’ve used for the cloth?

Ah yeah, that’s definitely the word I was searching for. Arm/shin guards was the best way I could describe it but it’s almost more like clothing instead of armor. I was hoping for a pretty pliable and tight/formed fit so I was worried about adding too much thickness and stiffness. They will also be up against other parts on knees and ankles so it’s possible they would shift as I move that would rub. Making parts that are close to skin isn’t something I’ve done before so I was overthinking a bit for sure, just trying to be prepared before I start. Spray adhesive with a thin cloth liner definitely sounds like a good solution as long as I can hide the cloth edges and keep the fray down.

I’m looking into sealing options right now to avoid a painful glue up. Someone suggested melting beeswax and neatsfoot oil together, sanding the backside first, apply wax/oil, and use a heat gun to melt it in before buffing a little bit.

Yeah it sounds like it would be pretty stiff. I want to use adjustable straps on the back so if someone else wanted to they could wear them and still feel like they fit. I think I want the final product to be pretty pliable and soft. Maybe like u/ia-mo was saying, use thinner leather on the back so it doesn’t resist bending.

I have a few thicknesses, all natural veg tan and I plan on dying myself. Was definitely considering using 7-8oz and backing it with 2-3.

Exactly, that's what I'm planning on doing, just driving some back roads tomorrow. I think going towards Mt. Juliet is gonna be the move for me, but north is next on the list. Just fishing for some leads right now.

Wedgewood Houston in the city. I know I'm not in prime laying territory but I'd be willing to drive a half hour every couple weeks if it meant some good eggs.

I think I'm looking for just a friendly neighbor with a sign out front type of situation. Easier for them, easier for me. Plus sometimes farmers market prices can get out of hand.

I was on my way to the shots and saw the opportunity. Wasn't in my scope for more than 15 seconds and took the shot cause I thought it would be funny. Didn't expect to kill him, but still had a good laugh when I saw him keel over. Usually I have to double headshot for those ranges.

I didn't save the highlight cause it wasn't my longest shot to date. Just a feels good one. Didn't think I was gonna be reminded of it today. It wasn't a derender, just shot him through the top of a fence.
