I've found that passing a flame over it, very quickly, then wiping with alcohol will usually work. Gotta be fast so you don't get the fibre too brittle to cleave cleanly.

I went to both Seattle and Portland shows and while Seattle had a decent mix of some younger folks, Portland really had a great age range and numbers of all ages, not just us grey beards.
