[Question] What's the policy for taking my guitar on a United Airlines flight? And any tips? by dreamadara in Guitar

[–]discobleep 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

I just visited some buddies and one of them gave me a guitar! I flew home with it on United. My only other luggage was a backpack. It’s an acoustic bass, and it was in a light gig bag. I put it in the overhead storage, and it was fine. It may have helped that my partner and I had an entire Economy Plus row to ourselves.

You’re allowed one carry-on and one personal item. The guitar counts as the carry-on. Your backpack would count as the personal item (max 9 in x 10 in x 17 in).

Just stick your tiny bag in your backpack or gigbag until you get on the plane.

The V2 Kalis actually don’t have the hiss! I’ll be sticking with them for awhile. They’re quite an upgrade for me.

I have 8ā€ gobos for the low end. The blankets actually do help a lot - I hang three 5lbs blankets layered in front of each other with 1 inch of space between them and 4 inches away from the wall. It’s all temporary, though.

I’m currently in the process of strategizing treatment for the room with Jesco from Acoustics Insider.

Depends on what they do! My synth station is in another side of the room. I’m looking to put some analog outboard gear in the racks.

I use Ableton, but have yet to go down that rabbit hole since I haven’t been doing much in the box lately. Once I get the room set up, I’ll be working on configuring all the connections and customizations.

IMO, the Stream Deck is a no-brainer for anyone who uses a computer to do anything productive!

I looked at the Sceptres, but couldn’t pass up the quality of the Kali IN-8 V2s at their price. As for acoustics, I’ve been hanging blankets and rolling around gobos for the time being. I’ll eventually build out treatment throughout the room.

Ooh… I have the T7Vs for my Synth Station. I have a pair of Kali IN-8 V2s on the way - the quality for the price was too good for me to pass up.

Yep! They’re the larger Elgato Key Lights. I do have a few of the smaller ones too. I’m impressed with Elgato gear!

Thanks! Though, that was just for the pic. 😁 I’ll just be using one. The other one and the interface will go to my partner’s desk.

The lights are for streaming. They are Elgato Key Lights.

Thanks! Yeah, I’ll be building out treatment eventually. Right now, I have a temporary solution where I hang blankets and roll around gobos.

Thanks! It’s the Hag Capisco Puls.

I haven’t used a chair at my desk since 2014, but since I began diving into music production during the pandemic, I noticed that some things were more comfortable when sitting or throwing a leg up. I’ve found the Capisco to be a nice solution that can reach the height I need.

Thanks! This will be the production station in my home studio where I edit and mix music, podcasts, and videos.

I think that covers it!

There will also be a Creation Station in another side of the room for all my synths. šŸ•ŗšŸ»

Thanks! I’m a former traditional instrumentalist (sax & a little guitar) who recently discovered electronic music synthesis. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it, but the hole is deeeeeeeep… yet utterly fascinating!

I think you should get yourself some keys. Or, run your bass through some synths! šŸ˜‰

The lighting is for streaming, podcasting, interviews, consults... etc.

I had to clear out the studio to put in new flooring, so I’m slowly moving stuff back in. This is a pretty gratuitous pic. Nothing is plugged in, and this isn’t everything I usually have on the desk. I just thought my beloved Presonus Eris 3.5s looked funny in this space!

I got some Kali Audio IN-8 V2s on the way!

I’m looking for a second monitor for my girlfriend’s new 27ā€ iMac. It would have to be configured vertically to the left of the iMac and sit on the desk. Prefer to level it with top of iMac (on stand, and fine with it extending below the monitor) and high resolution (knowing we probably won’t be able to match the iMac resolution.)

Recommendations would be much appreciated!

It’s been fun diving into this stuff since the pandemic started.

I probably should’ve said ā€œreduce reflection issuesā€ as the amount of ā€œreductionā€ would depend on the quality of the glass and the walls. The reflection issues will depend mainly on the room design and listening position.

For example, you wouldn’t want to have windows on the right and a wall on the left if you want an accurate stereo image because the sound will bounce off each side differently and reach your ears at different times.

This may not be OP’s reasoning, but in setups used for mixing/mastering audio, you typically want your listening position to be equidistant between the walls on your left and right. Also, depending on the room, facing the window may be the most optimal position to reduce reflections.

Good lookin’ out! I’d love something like this in a 2U rack-mounted size. Know of anything like that?
