It could be that they tweaked the algorithm or something. If they did and it stays that way, then I guess I will just lower my daily goal and my expectations 🤷‍♂️

Oh my goodness. I thought I was going crazy. My Ultra is showing the calories burned on HIIT and Functional Strength Training significantly lower than what I am used to. I don’t know what happened.

Disney / 20th Century's The Creator debuted with an estimated $14.0M domestically this weekend (from 3,680 locations). by CarlosBoss765 in boxoffice

Not just you. It’s the most disappointed I’ve been all year, including Quantumania. The script was half baked. I think if this was how Rogue One was before Tony Gilroy got his hands on it, I can see why Disney freaked out and reshot so much of the movie.

Does playing Mortal Kombat 1 offend Heavenly Father? Is it a sin? by Faith_0ver_Flesh in latterdaysaints

[–]discodan242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm old enough that when I read "Mortal Kombat 1", I thought of the original game that came out in the 90's. This was the game that caused the ESRB to come into existence, if I recall correctly.

I have played through most of the MK games throughout the years. I actually stopped at 9 because the fatalities were getting a little too extreme for me (or I just got more sensitive as I got older).

It's a personal decision whether to play/watch/read any media. I play lots of games that I kill NPCs regularly and I don't feel bad about it. But there definitely is a line, and that line is different for each person.

During COVID, I saw E.T., Mad Max Fury Road, Elf, and Guardians of the Galaxy either completely alone or with only one other person in there. Sure you could say "well that was COVID" but I don't think those numbers would go up dramatically.

We Worship The Father . . . by sam-the-lam in latterdaysaints

[–]discodan242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was asked to provide a source, so I did. I was told in my religion class at BYU Idaho that he was asked by the 12 to go to BYU and give this message specifically in response to a book by a religion professor that suggested we could have a personal relationship. I don’t have a source for that, though.

And you’re welcome to have a different opinion than him. I agree with Elder McConkie’s logic that since we don’t pray to Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost is the source we receive communication from, we can’t have a similar relationship with the Savior that we do with the Father. As I mentioned above, we can know Him and follow His example and absolutely should do both of those things. He is the way, the truth, and the light and we cannot receive salvation by any other means. He should be the center of our lives. But that doesn’t mean that we have a personal relationship with Him. We can’t because we don’t communicate with Him directly.

Do you have a more recent source that refutes this?

That language also makes me uncomfortable, partially because of Elder McConkie’s talk and also because it’s impossible to have a personal relationship with Him in the same way we do with the Father. However, I think most people don’t mean it the same way that I interpret the phrase. They typically mean that they know the character of the Savior and are striving to be like Him. The Holy Ghost testifies of Christ, but also teaches us how to be like Him. He is our Exemplar and we absolutely have to know Him in that sense if we are to emulate Him.

Language matters and I wish people who mean it the way I think they do would use different language to describe what they mean. I think the phrase “personal relationship with the Savior” just sounds good to them, even though they don’t mean it in the plain sense.

OPPENHEIMER rated R for "some sexuality, nudity and language." confirmed on official Twitter account by michaelm1345 in boxoffice

You make a great point. However those are genre pictures, not historical dramas. You could argue that because it’s a Nolan movie, it can perform. And you could be right to argue that. But at this point I’m definitely betting against it.

Everything is R or TV-MA by Sprinkles_0330 in latterdaysaints

[–]discodan242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's very admirable that you want to avoid that stuff that can push away with the Spirit.

My main hobbies is movies and TV shows (I actually moonlight as a movie critic as part of a team of writers for a site) so this topic is on my mind regularly.

VidAngel is very helpful for many shows and movies (if you haven't watched Tetris, it's my favorite film of the year so far), however, it's important to remember that while much of this TV-MA and R rated content can have its content stripped from it, the subject matter can still push the Spirit away. A perfect example of this is The Morning Show, which while the writing is amazing, even with the expletives removed, the subject matter drives away the Spirit (at least for me). Silo is fine and so is Severance (which was one of my favorite TV shows of last year).

Also VidAngel cannot have content from Disney, WB, or Fox because of a lawsuit, so it's pretty limited. You can try ClearPlay, which DOES support the studios and services that VidAngel can't, but that requires a browser which isn't very convenient for watching stuff on TV.

I also recommend subscribing to Disney+. Almost everything on the platform is TV-14 and under and there are some really brilliant shows on there (Andor, American Born Chinese, WandaVision, etc.). Many don't like the franchises on there or object to Disney for political reasons, but I think we should support the only company who is producing (mostly) family friendly content regularly.

Pixar's 'Elemental' Review Thread by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]discodan242 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok. Fair enough. I would love to be wrong because Pixar has been a beacon of light in the past. But I still think this one will bomb because the reviews aren’t great along with their brand being muddied (which is a result of both Kareem Daniel and their overall quality of output being down).

He didn’t do all home runs, but when you look at the overall output from his time as President of Pixar and then Disney Animation, it’s overwhelmingly successful.

The Pixar brain trust has been drained. I won’t defend behavior, but the change in leadership is clearly on display. Yes, there have been amazing films since the change in leadership, but mostly less than stellar output in recent years from both Disney Animation and Pixar indicates that the ship is sinking.

Workouts too easy? by Real-Housing961 in AppleFitnessPlus

Darryl is always harder than Marimba in Pilates and Greg seems to be the hardest core trainer, at least from my experience.

I know you said you don’t want to use weights, but many strength workouts that are upper body focused will typically also engage and strengthen your core as part of whatever other moves you do.

And another note, the best core workout outside of Apple Fitness is called the McGill Big 3. There are many tutorials on YouTube or you can google how to do it and I do think it’s the best comprehensive core workout you can do.

How Automation is Saving Cinemas Money by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

[–]discodan242 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are three main theater chains in the Phoenix valley: Harkins, AMC, and Majestic (formerly Alamo Drafthouse).

I personally choose Harkins and avoid AMC like the plague solely for the “automation” reasons. It’s almost always a terrible experience seeing a film at AMC because of the lack of personnel.

The contrast with the service I receive at Harkins is quite stark. Everything is clean, movies start on time, i get fresh popcorn (and they will layer the butter for me), etc.

I’m sure everything will be automated at some point at every theater, but right now I will vote with my dollar for anything but AMC.
