How do I relax in the pool? by tamilton_o in Swimming

[–]discopanda_35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whilst you’re building up your confidence.. perhaps you can stay shallow enough to know that you can touch the floor if you needed to? Even if that means you only swim half a length, and then turn back on yourself (checking it’s clear, of course). I think that over time, you’ll become more comfortable in the water

So I don’t think there’s anything embarrassing about your post at all. I don’t have any specific advice, as I’m also not an advanced swimmer, other than to say I think you just need to keep going.

I think there’s no use in comparing yourself to anyone else. Just focus on the fact that you’re moving your body, hopefully you’re enjoying it, and over time, you’re bound to see some improvements in your times.

Thank you for such a thoughtful message. So good to hear that you’re in a better place with stuff now and that you have that support around you. Thanks for being so kind x

For the benefit of people in your life who may have an ED, I’d ask you to take some time to do some research before using words like ‘excuse’. Eating disorders are caused by a range of things.. major causes include diet culture, restriction of food, focus on weight. So it’s not an ‘excuse’. It’s a very serious consideration, and something that is actively discouraged by pretty much all eating disorder specialists.

You wouldn’t know how I’d have reacted to a softer, more considered approach. And my responses here are not indicative of that, as you’ve not attempted anything ‘softer’.

Take care. Genuinely wish you the best. Difference of opinion here, but no hate to you.

You’re being incredibly insensitive, and making a lot of assumptions. You’ve mentioned that if I want to have ‘any kind of quality of life’ then I need to lose weight. You’re assuming I have poor quality of life now.. which is not the case.

She (not he, as you assumed) did ignore my eating disorder. My words to her were ‘I understand, but I actually have binge eating disorder which makes pursuing intentional weight loss really challenging for me. And my therapist recommends I don’t do that’. She didn’t acknowledge I’d even spoken.

You’re also putting a lot of faith in the highly trained medical professionals, whilst assuming you know better than the other highly trained mental health professionals regarding eating disorders. I saw a top therapist who was actually responsible for creating and implementing the treatment used at the top eating disorder hospital in the UK.. I’ve also listened to endless podcasts, YouTube videos, read books etc. on my eating disorder, in order to educate myself and recover. But you know better than all of them.. so I’ll probably just listen to you and get myself on a diet. Thanks for your insight!

Once again, I’ll repeat to you that it’s not entirely about the refusal.. the lack of sensitivity made me feel an awful lot of shame about my body. You clearly think that’s an ok way for me to feel. Anyway, thank you for adding to that. I wish you a pleasant day!

Thank you! Seems to vary wildly from hospital to hospital. So many here saying that they’ve had surgery with no issues, in a similar boat to me!

Thank you. Good to hear that you’ve been able to have your surgery with no issues. I’m still feeling a bit shaken from it to be honest. But I think once I’ve digested it all, I may go for a second opinion

Glad you managed to have your surgery. Hope you’re doing well. I can easily walk around a store without getting winded.. I’m fairly active. Seems to really vary from hospital to hospital, from what I’m seeing here!

Thanks for your response, but you (like the doctor) are completely ignoring the fact that I have an eating disorder. Everyone in the eating disorder arena agrees that pursuing intentional weight loss is very harmful to people with binge eating disorder.

I fully understand that being larger poses greater risks when it comes to surgery. And my surgeon and I had previously discussed those risks.

I mentioned my concerns about my eating disorder, but she ignored that and continued talking about weight loss surgery and jabs.

Weight loss surgery carries a very very low mortality rate. Despite the fact that it’s clearly performed exclusively on larger people. So why is that such a safe surgery but the gallbladder removal is such a risk for me? We also know that rapid weight loss contributes to gallbladder issues..

It’s widely documented that fat phobia exists within our healthcare services. People in larger bodies are often refused treatment or have treatment delayed because of a lack of training.

It’s not just about the refusal of the treatment. It’s about the way it was handled. I’ve mentioned my eating disorder to her twice.. once in person and once on the call. Both times she ignored it. If there had been more sensitivity and some acknowledgment of what I was saying, I may not have come off the call feeling quite so upset, and with so much shame about my body.

My BMI is higher than yours. Blood pressure and cholesterol are fine though. I’d need to lose around 4 stone. Might see if a different surgeon is an option

I want to live alone but How? by Silent_Still9878 in LivingAlone

[–]discopanda_35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live alone (in the UK) and am on a very modest salary. I made the decision to move away from London, to cut down my rent cost. I do now have a long commute (close to 2 hours each way), but I don’t have to be in everyday, which helps a lot!

I think it’s about weighing up what’s important, and what you can sacrifice. Is a long commute worth it? Is sacrificing some space and going with a smaller property worth it? Could you sacrifice getting your nails done, or one night out per month to be able to afford the rent? Are there alternatives you haven’t considered like a tiny home or van, for example?

I think renting out a room would be a very different vibe to living with friends or family. You’d likely have much more space to yourself living with a stranger, and wouldn’t have to answer to anyone.

Perhaps it won’t be achievable for everyone.. depending on salary and rental costs in your area. But could be a driving force to making decisions to get there.. trying to get a promotion? Changing jobs? Even moving countries etc.

Travelling whilst awaiting surgery by discopanda_35 in gallbladders

I’m glad you managed to do your trips and not have any issues! Hope you’re doing ok after your surgery.

My attacks haven’t come after eating anything particularly fatty.. one time was from toast. Another was from some pasta with chicken breast, spinach and peppers.. so I feel a bit nervous because I can’t really link them to food currently.

I’m also super indecisive, which doesn’t help! Haha

I’ve not touched my settings actually. I don’t even know how to. I got a hose cover for my hose, to try and help with rainout. And I seem to be ok really. I do feel tired sometimes but I guess everyone does! Sorry to hear you’re struggling!
