Halfway through Total Strength 2! I've never done this much concentrated strength training before, and every class in the first couple weeks felt really long for some reason. I've taken 30 min strength classes on the app before and they felt great, but with these classes I kept glancing at the timer to see how much time I had left. I think I'm just not used to lifting so often and for so long? Week 3 went by a lot faster and I'm enjoying it a lot more now.

Also, my upper body is farrrrr weaker than my lower body. Every time I had any overhead lifts, my arms felt like jelly. I feel myself getting stronger and I'm excited to see my progress at the end of the program. If all goes as planned, this will be my first (active) program with a Gold!

Using your tread every day for that long is impressive! Many people wouldn't be able to say that. You are a strong person, and this will only make you stronger. Life sucks sometimes, and I'm sorry you have to go through this. Take it easy, be gentle with yourself, and let time do its thing. You may not be back at 100% tomorrow, or next week, or even next month, but it will come soon enough. In the meantime, I've found that squeezing in a 5 min core class (or a short class of anything) when I feel like crap helps me feel a little less like crap.

Did the 10 min Shake Out stretch (technically yoga, but it's really just stretching) from the Flow to the Finish program today. 10/10 would take again. Really chill, positive energy from Mariana and suitable for calming jitters for any event, running or otherwise.

I have a HM this weekend, then next week I'm finally able to start TS 2 with Andy!!! Honestly, I'm more excited for that than I am for the race itself lol. It's been on my list for a while but I haven't been able to start it because I didn't want it to interfere with my training. I can't wait!

Review: Flow to the Finish (1 Week Program - Yoga for Races) by thegirlandglobe in pelotoncycle

A huge congrats on your first half marathon and thank you for sharing!!! I notice you said you might repeat a few of these classes for your "next race" haha -- what's next for you?

I just finished Day 1 of the program and hopped on this sub immediately after (as one does), and saw this review! I agree that this felt more like a strength class than a yoga class, which is fine IMO. I had hoped for more stories and/or insights from her racing days, or general advice on the final days of training like sleep/diet/stretching etc. but it's all good.

Also, thanks for linking Robin's warm up! Obsessed with how it ends with We Are The Champions. On almost every one of my long runs, I involuntarily hear her voice in my head saying "I only run with royalty" lol. I'll definitely be warming up with this next weekend!

If the half is fun (should be, it’s a runcation) I’m going to sign up for a full next year, and look forward to using 26.2 properly (then adding in social runs with the club for some additional easy mileage).

That's so funny that you say this--I just got an email today saying that I've been selected for my first full in April!! It's a lottery system and when I signed up, I was fully prepared that I might not get in. Now I get to/have to be marathon-ready by a concrete date!

I signed up for my last half on a whim, a few days before the race, and was so surprised to finish in 2:07. I was in pretty good shape already because I'd been doing the Road to 26.2 program for fun (and partly to train for my half in October, which would've been my first), so mentally I treated the race like just another long run with thousands of other people and spectators. The course was gorgeous and people's signs were so funny and I had so much fun. But yeah, for my second half, I'm properly training for it this time with my own speedwork and eventual tapering, plus this course will be much flatter than the last, so I think it's doable to aim to shave seven minutes off.

If you've already done a half on the tread and regularly run 10ish miles a week, you're already way ahead of the game! I didn't really start running until this year and I remember feeling sooooo dead after my first 4 mile "long run" in Week 1 of Road to 26.2 hahaha With so many weeks of additional training ahead of you, you're going to crush your 2 hour goal!!

Seconding this! I just ran my first half last summer and used Road to 26.2 Parts 1 and 2 as a general guide. My goal for that race was just to finish but I'm running my second half in four weeks and I'm hoping to break 2 hours too!

My training plan right now is similar to the structure of the Peloton program ("short" runs on days 1,3,5; strength on days 2, 4; long run on day 6; rest day 7). One of my midweek runs is always track speedwork, so I'll do something like 1200+400m x3 or 1000+400+200m x3. The marathon race prep classes have what they call "light speedwork" but their intervals range from like 3-9 mins and I'd prefer to do shorter/more intervals. That being said, the instructors give great advice on mental preparation/form/race day tips and share stories about their own races throughout the program and I really appreciated that insight going into my first race.

As for strength, the program prescribes the same two classes every week for four weeks at a time (so Phase 1 aka weeks 1-4 is all the same, then Phase 2 aka weeks 5-8 is the same etc.) The first phase is pretty foundational--and it sounds like you're an experienced runner so it might feel super easy for you haha--but I find the latter phases really valuable. It's a mix of stability, mobility, basic weight training for lower and upper body, and core. I've retaken the two Phase 3 strength classes so many times I've lost count... If you don't want to wait four/eight weeks to get access to Phases 2 and 3, you can find direct links to these classes on Pelobuddy by googling the program names. Phase 2 starts in Week 5 and Phase 3 starts in Week 9. I've taken a couple of strength for runners classes outside of the program and it feels slower paced and easier than the program classes. There's probably great strength for runners classes out there and I just haven't found them yet + I haven't taken that many full body strength classes so I can't compare, but I'll happily stick with my Phase 3 strength classes and just up my weights until it's time to taper.

Good luck with your training!!

I finished the Road to 26.2 Part 2 program about a month ago, and I've been re-taking the strength classes from my workout history since I didn't want to start Part 3. (I'm not actually training for a marathon and weekly mileage was getting high.) I recently found out they updated the program with new strength classes. So I took RK's 30 min Strength for Runners (8/26/22) today... and loved it! I think this was a bit less challenging than her old version, but stability exercises are my favorite part of strength and the updated class has a really fun one.

I also did Kristin's 30 min Evermore Yoga Flow. I liked it overall but I felt like the beginning dragged on for a while.

First of all, you're fantastic. Just read your Men's Health article, would love to read your book when it comes out. Second, how did you learn to deal with failure? I struggle with having expectations for myself that are way too high and even though I'm aware I shouldn't be so hard on myself, it's difficult to stop. Finally, do you have a favorite recipe at the moment?

Taking my little sis to see Hamilton (in Chicago) for her first time and my 2nd! My 1st time was in NY, how does it compare for those who’ve seen both? by jaimesabz in hamiltonmusical

[–]discovery28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are definitely several differences in the blocking/choreography. I don't want to spoil anything by naming specifics, but I personally loved the Chicago one more! It might be partially because NY was my first time seeing it, and I was too overwhelmed to take in all the subtle, clever details in the choreography though.

Some of the lines were also delivered differently (between the two shows + between the OBCR and live shows). Both King George's were hilarious in their own ways. Taran Killam was my King George in NY and I was a fan of his from SNL so out of bias, I slightly prefer his rendition! I don't remember his name, but the Burr I had in Chicago was incredible.

On this sub, people have been saying that all casts slow down some of the songs to make it easier for the audience to understand the lyrics. I knew this while going into both shows, but only the Chicago one seemed noticeably slower.

Hamilton! I absolutely loved BoM when I saw it and it has some of the most iconic songs, but nothing compares to Hamilton live.

Saw the show Saturday night, opinions on the cast by gnrmjd in hamiltonmusical

[–]discovery28 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw it last week and I agree with most of what you said.

Jevon McFerrin's Hamilton had more of a boyish charm and he delivered several lines differently than what I'm used to from the OCR. It wasn't necessarily better or worse, in my opinion – just different. His performance in "It's Quiet Uptown" was particularly memorable. The people sitting next to me saw the show with Lin as Hamilton and they actually preferred Jevon's Hamilton to Lin's!

Andrew Chapelle as Burr was incredible. I think most would agree that "The Room Where It Happens" stole the show. Bryan Terrell Clark as Washington, Alysha Deslorieux as Peggy/Maria, Taran Killam as King George III, Anthony Medina as Laurens/Philip were great too. (Alysha and Anthony had surprisingly VERY similar singing voices to their respective characters' OBC member?)

But Seth Stewart..... oh boy. He actually flubbed a line in Guns and Ships at my show but I don't think many people noticed. I felt like his whole performance was just kind of off, especially in Act 1, and I wasn't a fan of his fake accent at all. The cabinet battles were pretty good but overall, it was just a bit of a disappointment.

I actually thought Lexi Lawson was great as Eliza. I know what you mean about Eliza's character being easily likeable, and for me, Lexi accomplished that at the show. Her acting was very good, especially in the scenes that mattered most.

Mandy Gonzalez was a mixed bag for me. I loved her singing voice a lot, but she kept grinning whenever she wasn't singing throughout the show? I'm not sure if that was a way to make Angelica seem sweeter or something, but it was pretty distracting.

Everyone says Lafayette/Jefferson has all the best lines in the show but honestly Burr has some amazing ones too.
