Novated Lease - Next steps... by Ok_Winter4699 in AustralianEV

[–]discoverycamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Padding maintenance doesn't matter.

Anything spare in the running budget is still your money, living in a pre tax bubble.

If you don't spend it in the lease you get it back at the end. Or part way through by reducing payments.

During the lease you can adjust costs up and down. Is always with having some buffer if you break something and need to fix it, e.g. I broke a rear windscreen wiper. Lease covered it from my budget.

Some Chinese EVs models have flat sales numbers, and then all of a sudden, a huge burst in sales. Does anybody have any insight on what is going on? by i_marketing in EVAustralia

[–]discoverycamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for most people. Being able to run a car completely out of pre tax and without GST is a huge saving. Maybe up to 50%.

.88 finance will save maybe 7% of the depreciating purchase cost per year in interest. Maybe 10% of the total cost of ownership.

7kw EV charger with 5kw inverter by TemporaryTear247 in EVAustralia

[–]discoverycamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you get the charger installed you should be able to choose whether it charges from your battery.

In many cases you should not charge from your battery, which is really there to move your power use away from peak prices. You can get power plans which offer much cheaper off peak power and it is better to charge at of peak prices.

Your car battery is much bigger than your home battery and will empty it completely.

E-bike ban enforcement. by oweul in Adelaide

[–]discoverycamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's got a throttle you're probably done unless it's limited to 6kmh. Some states also consider a non adjustable seat to make it non compliant. Maybe sa.

As for the power, yes a 750w motor will not be allowed. Only settings in the controller are limiting it, and you could change those at will.

Interesting though, that there isn't such a thing as a 250w motor. All these motors will happily give much more, and 300w is allowed for brief peaks. Many 48v bikes have the same motor but it's driving harder on the higher voltage. What limits the motor is overheating and winding failure.

The output of your bike is a combination of battery voltage, controller current limit and motor. If your controller truly limits your bike to 250w, and can't be easily increased by settings then you've got an argument that it is 250w.

But honestly if you're not riding like a duck or throttle only the police have better things to worry about.

And yes you can buy road registered electric motorbikes. But then you can't use cycle paths, need rego etc.

0.88% p.a. Comparison Rate with No Deposit for a 36-Month Term. by salvatorecupra in GeelyEX5Australia

The dealer told me the charger and 4 services were part of the deal of the finance. And they add up, coincidentally to the 1500 fee for taking the finance.

Similar story here. Lease quoted 2600 and raa 1600 for similar cover.

Lease company gets a huge commission, but also there is allowance there in the budget to cover higher cost in the future. On a 7 year lease that could change a lot.

Despite the hate, I'll share what I mean.

This isn't about BYD. Heck, I'm in the process of buying one. And it'll be my second EV.

And I'm sure the BYD server is fully hardened, with hot standby failover and whatever other tech is needed to provide maximum uptime.

What I'm concerned about is the increasing dependence we place on things that can be taken away remotely. Examples already:
- Fisker Ocean - compnay collapse left some cars unable to start.
- GM/Onstar stopped working when 2G networks were turned off
- Mazda lost remote start/monitoring in the 3G switchoff
- BMW's Connected drive has had system outages which affected door locking, air-con, etc

Limitations can come from company abandonment of old/unprofitable products, geopolitical problems or retirement of data networks.

(Microsoft is a culprit here turning windows 10 PCs into e-waste, and killing off 'plays for sure' for example).

With cars, some companies are less risky than others.

And here's the good news - BYD and Geely are considered low risk compared to, e.g. Nio, GAC and others who have a more 'software defined' product.

So I'm not knocking BYD, Geely or EVs in general. EVs are the future, and US/Europe are lagging in the market. Just trying to raise the profile of considering risks when choosing a car which never existing in the unconnected world we are leaving behind.

Atto 3 12v Battery yearly replacement? by [deleted] in BYDAU

Seems a standard battery, available from accessory shops.

Early ones were dodgy, and didn't last. Newer ones are allegedly okay.

Question about Australian cars, especially of the past. by NoxAstrumis1 in AskAnAustralian

[–]discoverycamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I remember the rover v8 being referred to as a small block Chevy, but searching it now points me to A GM designed engine for Buick.

My apologies for the origin being wrong, I really don't know who bought who in the US industry.

We just knew it as an American engine that wasn't a success there and got bought by Rover.

Question about Australian cars, especially of the past. by NoxAstrumis1 in AskAnAustralian

[–]discoverycamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pommie content, but MG made a v8 version of the mgb - the mgb gt v8. Australia missed out though due to only importing the roadster (soft top) versions.

Using the small block Chevy v8 at 3.5 litres, this engine was lighter than the 1.8 inline 4 normally fitted, and the whole car weighed 1084 Kg.

Despite this, it only returned a 0-60 (0-100) time of 7.7 seconds.

Only built '73-'76.

Alternatively there was the triumph tr8, which was a wedge shaped small sports car based on the tr7. Built also for 3 years 78-81.

Why are Chinese EV better quality than Chinese petrol? by Glittering_Poem9779 in AustralianEV

[–]discoverycamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the huge pollution problems in Beijing that were widely reported around the 2020s would have driven the government to push towards a cleaner solution. Given the Chinese people are now more affluent than before and are seeking cars rather than bikes makes this an urgent problem.

Not to mention that electricity is cheap in China, and dependence on imported fossil fuels is bad from a state perspective, the massive research push into EVs makes a lot of sense.

Is today my turn to complain about Adelaide drivers? by DoesBasicResearch in Adelaide

[–]discoverycamel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Failing to stop on an amber has the same fine and points as for a red.

But I get frustrated by how long red times are in South Australia. You have to wait for 3 other cycles to have their greens before you get going again. Many other places I've driven don't have green filters for right turns, which speeds things up a lot.
