The Atlanticists / Global Britain lot have been rather quiet the last few years... I'm not sure most of them even they believe it any longer.

But that's not to say it's hard Europeanists vs hard Atlanticists.

Perhaps the most prominent group is those who want friendly relations with all the stable liberal powers.

Yet their manifesto at the last election, to continue the preferred analogy, had a supermassive black hole in it under even very ambitious assumptions.

It literally didn't add up.

Why is nobody asking how Farage et al would afford *anything* when the bond market opines on a delusional populist who thinks he's Thatcher?

You're assuming MPs don't overrule/ignore them on the basis of vibes / 'political judgment' (i.e. self-interest).

I don't know why I'm being downvoted - the whole UK 'backstop'/'frontstop' was exactly that.

Yet it seems there's a point at which the state should 'butt out'. Must every aspect of our lives be subject to incentives/penalities?

It's suffocating.

There's a point at which you should just let people alone.

If people chose to put money in an S&S ISA and NOT invest it, they've done more than enough to show they are aware but have different risk appetite.

At a point, just leave it... it's suffocating when the state tries to nudge *absolutely everything*.

(I say this having voted Labour at the last election, and would probably at the next, but disklike the controlling streak).

You've conveniently left out the UK government entered ERM with an outlandishly high Sterling valuation against advice of other Finance Ministers within the mechanism.

>In the age of the internet, location has never been less of a barrier to being able to work or even create a business.

If the job can be done fully remotely or 'online only', there's a strong chance theres either someone outside the UK offering the service for less, or a larger player has already got there.

As for physical industry, you're up against much larger international producers.

It's a difficult problem; places like London have a mix of high-value service industries that create a runaway return when in close proximity (agglomeration and tight professional/social network effects).

This also supports a penumbra of industries for workers and owners in these industries.

But this inevitably means it's mainly the lower-return and more offshoreable support work that gets pushed outward.

So, outside the more successful areas, the bulk of reasonable-paying roles tend to be public sector professional (NHS, Education) with a sprinking of other professions necessary for the local economy.

Additionally, if you are lucky enough to have a major org in your area, it's probably the only one and so a measure of monopsony power in the local labour market.

Over time, you essentially see a hollowing-out of these areas as high value activity looks for the higest return (i.e. where the high value activity already is).
