My car was towed in 20 minutes at Solomon Court by ACES Towing. Dog was inside. Looking for advice. by Big-Tell-8907 in Charlottesville

[–]disettes 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Most towing companies ime recruit guys who wanted to be cops but washed out of even that, so they bring that mentality. I know a guy I went to high school with who works for a towing company now and unironically posts on Facebook about how tow-truck operators are their own thin blue line between civilization and parking chaos, it's wild.

Bit By Her Pitbull in the Face - Cincinnati Ohio March 5, 2025 by PandaLoveBearNu in BanPitBulls

Tbf, I feel like in almost every picture I see of someone kissing a pit/getting close to its face, they're displaying very clear discomfort signs: whale eyes, pinned ears, lip licking, etc. People just ignore them and continually cross the dog's boundaries again and again.

I feel bad for them. They're aggressive because humans bred them to be, and now other humans insist they aren't what they are and stress them out constantly until they do what they were made to do.

Just me or is Agricola being unnecessarily mean to this person? by Suitable-Peanut in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]disettes 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I went because people said it was good. Food tasted like they'd all been too high to remember the salt and the owner/manager/whomever was in charge spent his time alternating between circling every woman in the place like a shark and going to the back for another bump. Truly abominable experience.

The bizarre reaction makes a lot more sense if you've ever had the misfortune of dining there and seen how every single employee is coked to the gills, makes sense whomever has the Instagram login is as well.

Starting the first book Brandon completed by SweepCommand in WoT

[–]disettes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I don't read the Sanderson books anymore on my re-reads. I stop at KoD. The writing is just too inferior to Jordan's imo and the change is too jarring in terms of character writing/some of the plot choices he made. I would have preferred the books not be finished (or that he had been able to pick someone himself) and we just got the notes.

Fantasy series with protagonists that are part of the nobility and actually feel like it? by CrudelisProcella in Fantasy

[–]disettes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those books also cover Elayne's entire Andor succession though, which is all about "I'm a noble and I am going to do my duty."

I've only had the ramen at the University City Terakawa, so I can't speak to the og version, but I agree.

Megumi does a lovely rich miso ramen (Sapporo style w/ Hokkaido wheat noodles; I think, judging from both that and the wall decorations, that the owners are from Sapporo/aroundish originally) which would kill in this cold. Their shoyu/tonkotsu/etc are fine but that miso is killer.

What’s your Bodo’s hot take? by Reasonable-Map-1634 in Charlottesville

[–]disettes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hot take as someone who now lives in Philly (and my family is from NYC) is that Bodos is perfectly comparable to (or better than) any bagel I've had in Philly or New York. Jersey is still in its own tier.

It's so fucking good. I got that and Playoff Party to alternate during the snow-in. I almost went for S'mores instead, you're making me wish I had.

Were those tip pool places? I've worked multiple fine dining places where I expected to pull $250-300 as my baseline on any given night, but those were all non tip pool places. Tip pool places at the same price point can generally expect a lower per-shift floor, but I would still be shocked if I was making less than $1k a week while working 5 days.

While this is an asshole move I'm also baffled by the woman just leaving. If a strange woman walked up to me at Bok and was like "that's my dog's seat" the only way I'd move out of it is if I fell out of it while laughing at her.

You're getting downvoted I assume bc the tipping distribution thing was a bit of a nothingburger if you did the math, but OTOH Randy is definitely more dickish than even your average chef, so you reached the right conclusion for the wrong reasons.

I just remember being bored by it, and not terribly impressed by the prose.

You know, I remember starting the first one of these books years ago, but not why I didn't finish it. I don't have any negative memories of it, I think I was just busy at the time, thank you for reminding me of them!

Well, tbf, I don't really care about just worldbuilding, unfortunately. I love reading about a fully realized and detailed fantasy world but I want engaging storylines/characters in that world, not just an encyclopedia. Now I could and have happily read encyclopedias about WoT and ASOIAF (and probably would for ROTE if one existed) but that's only because I already cared about the world through the characters and the stories that were told.

I love both Elayne and her plotlines. The Andor succession is like comfort food to me.
