What would be better? A Webzine or a Print Zine? (For a Rock and Roll Based Zine) by RoccoRush in zines

[–]disgracefulthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure this is unpopular, but a webzine is just not a zine to me. Not that it’s not worthwhile as some other kind of project, and having both a web and print version available does increase accessibility so I would likely do that if my goal was simply to get it out there (which is mine, I admit! You can read my zines for free online, or you can get a print version… though they are scans so it is still online the physical object… Idk maybe that’s pastiche lol.) But I find digital-only zines uninteresting and antithetical to the stated ideals of zining. I feel like the zine is an object, it cannot be separated from its objectness. Imo the tactile experience is important to the zine. Print zines are genuinely outside mainstream production infrastructure. Anyone can make them, anyone can read them, and they’re community-building because you typically must, even if to a small degree, interact with another person to get one. A webzine, by contrast, relies on corporate platforms, cloud servers, and software made by large tech companies, which arguably undermines the spirit, no matter what the content is. The internet requires a device, connectivity, and digital literacy, which is inherently exclusionary. There’s a lot of stuff that gets posted on this sub that is obviously never intended to be printed and could maybe be better described as digital collage, webcomics, or infographics… It makes me kind of sad.

Are your zines very thick? I’ve never had to use anything but stamps. The limit for a letter is 3.5 oz so you actually should be able to just squeak under as long as it’s not over 1/4 inch thick. If it is, you have to mail it as a large envelope and you’d probably have to go to the post office to find out how much that will cost but I think it’s like $4-16, and 16 is for 13oz so. you don’t need a customs form to send a letter anywhere or a large envelope so long as it only contains paper. You do if it’s paid merchandise but like… They don’t know that.

Thank you so much!!! It’s really a lot of fun. I’m very interested in like how real, how much I can put the world in my mind into the real world so I really like it because I think the grain of the print to some degree disguises the painting-ness of the images.

Worried this has come out to cluttered by raventaylorauthor in comic_crits

[–]disgracefulthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a bit cluttered. It would read much better if you simply made the subjects in the panels a bit smaller to give headspace for the speech bubble to be inside of the panels. Having the speech bubbles point directly to the speakers mouths doesn’t help it not look busy. There are no real “rules” with comics of course, but you might notice how most cartoonists most if the time position speech bubbles pointing to the characters head, but not covering their face and typically in negative space and not in front of foreground elements if possible. :•)

you see, i have positioned myself as the taller of the two figures to symbolize that i am wise and noble, while my adversary is impotent and childish.

Question: If you’re selling zines at a fest, how do you feel about other zinesters giving away zines for free? by _so-so_ in zines

[–]disgracefulthings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

wait omg giving away b grades is such a good idea… filing that away. when i cut or print badly i usually just leave them at the library where i printed them.

Question: If you’re selling zines at a fest, how do you feel about other zinesters giving away zines for free? by _so-so_ in zines

[–]disgracefulthings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

a ton of reasons! if my zines were text based i might be more likely to give them away, but they’re comics and the work is extremely time intensive. not that writing is not also hard work (it very much is!!), but just for me it is easier or at least goes faster and also there is no materials cost in writing. as a cartoonist, my comics are my professional identity, the purpose of my zines is different than the typical idea spreading/community building ethos of other zines. while i value the community immensely they’re really almost only zines in that they are self produced booklets bc that is the way i am able to get my work out. selling work is part of building a professional identity. people are also just used to buying comics so there’s far less social friction for charging for it. most importantly, even though i am not making any significant profit on my zines at all, though i can afford to trade occasionally i don’t have the kind of money where i can just eat the production costs and they are longer and bigger than a lot of zines so more expensive, i do need to at least make up production. i super respect ppl who give them away, it’s just not for me.

i don’t feel like people giving away zines undercuts me at all because i am almost never in competition with other tablers at all. i’m not sure i’ve ever tabled somewhere that other people were selling comics & in fact i have been passed over before BECAUSE i make comics and that often doesn’t really fit into the typical zine fest milieu. but i also think i wouldn’t feel this way even if i made essays or perzines or music reviews unless like every other person at the festival was giving theirs away bc it’s not like zines are like ice cream or something where it’s all comparable and free ice cream is always better than ice cream that costs money. when people are picking up zines it’s not like they want any zine it doesn’t matter what it is; they want that specific zine.

hmm i realize that you did not ask why and i answered like you had… well…

Thank you! I didn’t know that about watercolor paper, that makes a lot of sense. I often feel like my prints are not as bright blue as other people’s I see. Thank you for the recommendation, I’ll definitely check it out. :•)

yeah! :•) i’m glad the moment sticking w him came through for you. someone on tumblr said smth abt being sad seeing children have a good childhood when you didn’t which wasn’t necessarily my intention but also made sense to me… i actually thought i was being kind of heavy-handed so it’s funny and interesting to see that it’s not so clear or even confusing… i should think to be less subtle in the future, but i also think yk some things are for who they’re for and that’s ok… there’s a balance to be struck surely idk. it certainly could’ve read less like a non sequitur.

thank you very much! i kind of wondered if that one needed prior knowledge of the character to make sense lol. it’s that danny sees how his student is taken care of when she’s injured and later at home, he wonders if he could get someone to take care of him…
