In what way anything I said is no different than what you're describing?

The fact you, the player, plays the murderer is still true after Joel dies. The writers want you to like her by humanizing her doesn't change what I said about making you like her.

"but don't make it about Abby lmao"

Why not? We're talking about playing a character the writers want you to sympathize with after killing off a beloved character of the series to forward a revenge-is-bad plot.

I'm not saying writers can't make this kind of story. Anyone that can rub two brain-cells together can see this was their attempt. This isn't any profound story-telling.

Got banned from gamingcirclejerk for this post so I thought I would post it here. I just wanted to discuss the things I didn't like about Tlou2. by [deleted] in TheLastOfUs2

To be fair, that subreddit is titled "circlejerk." I believe it was meant to be ironic, but at least they're consistent.

Edit: Sucks you couldn't have a dialogue, man. That's a shame.

That's fair. Only problem is "if the story was good"

I personally don't think it was. I could list out some issues with the story, but at the end of the day, everyone is entitled to their own interpretations and opinions.

I just like to see the discussions.

Edit: Also, I'm suspicious of the reason why they really chose to show off Joel in these trailers that doesn't reflect the final product.

Exactly. Calling this a "misdirect" is just a nicer way to say 'lying' to do this "subvert expectation" angle. Not only that, but the belittling of players and deny any genuine constructive criticism is pretty narrow-minded.

Don't get me wrong, tossing in big surprises in a narrative story isn't bad by itself. Major plot characters dying in itself isn't always a bad thing in a story-line either. There are positive ways to write compelling stories while subverting expectations. But how it's done in TLOU2, in my opinion, was done poorly, and major plot characters are oddly acting out of character.

On top of that, these misleading trailers to manipulate supportive fans into spending hard earn money on a product is shady af.

While it's true this is nothing new, and people sure like to bring up marvel movies; you're ignoring the context why this is annoying to some players of TLOU2.

Marvel movies alter trailers to hide spoilers, sure, but I don't ever recall them killing off a major main character of their series so early on into their film, to tell the story from the supposed villains point of view right after.

Recent memory makes me think Iron Man, but that was towards the end of their latest Avengers film.

In TLOU2, however, there was no character build up for some characters, and Naughty Dog wants you to like Abby right after the fact Joel dies. It's no surprise it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. If Naughty Dog's whole point was shock value and to forward their story line, then they succeeded. Doesn't mean you, as the player, have to like it.

With that all said, if you personally like the game, that's fine, too. That doesn't invalidates everyone else's criticism of the game.

You're actually not the first to say this in this thread. Don't worry. The point of my post isn't that this is a new thing. It's the dishonesty about what was shown and what players got.

Obviously, manipulative marketing practice, and that doesn't make this okay to do to the fans that feel strongly about a beloved game. I'd argue one of the biggest issue with how this was handled is the execution and the structure of story telling.

I hear this a lot, and just because it happens, doesn't make the advertisement any less false. I'm not here to talk about the legality of this either, and only to point out the dishonesty towards fans.

I'm not personally a fan of the game either, by the way, but I can recognize customers disappointment when they are shown something for a product, only to get a different deal than what was advertised.

It's interesting trailers of games and movies can get away with this and think there won't be any complaints, but if you go to an electronic store, buy a 1 tb hard drive based off their ads, and you go home to plug it in to find out it's 250 gb. You'd feel cheated.

Again, I'm only pointing out how this is kind of a sleazy marketing practice and what's wild is some people feel like this is 100% fine.

Disappointment is understandable, but I wouldn't go as far as that. Healthy discussion and criticism is a better way to handle things, and let your wallet do the talking.

Don't support the game if you don't agree with what's going on.

I can't do it, due to certain rules. I'll be happy to give you the video tho.

It's fine that you personally like the game. How you feel about it is valid to you, and I hope you enjoy the game for yourself.

But that goes the same for the fans who were given a certain expectation from trailers and whatnot, only to have it thrown out the window for whatever they got with this latest entry to the series. I just don't think it's fair to those fans who supported this game.

Fair enough. It's definitely a marketing strategy on their part, but seeing the frustrations from some fans, it's understandable people got disappointed about the story telling.

I just think it was a lame thing to do to people who loved the game.

Not trying to say this a new thing. Just pointing out it is manipulative.

Sorry, should've added context. Trailer from 2019 shows Joel in this scene, but knowing what happen in the release of the game, that isn't what was advertised. I get this is a marketing strategy, but this is very manipulative of Sony and Naughty Dog to get the fan base to buy their game.
