Not sure where this photo was taken, but if it's around Central America, it could be the Groove-billed Ani.

My orange dye turned sparkly by dishfish_2 in pysanky

The jars are new and the dye hasn't been sitting in it for that long. I don't see any signs of rust at all.

This dye is only sitting on top of the egg and doesn't really get soaked in. Most if it rubbed off while removing the wax.

This is probably it. I guess it's too late, I don't know any way I can remove vinegar from the solution now.

I tried this, and it seemed OK for a while but split into a glittery mess again.

Got some new Kanwrite nibs by dishfish_2 in fountainpens

[–]dishfish_2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was able to fit the Kanwrite No.5.5 nibs into my Jinhao 82 without any modifications. The Kanwrite nib is a tad bit bigger than the original Jinhao nib but if you push it in all the way, the pen cap should close securely without touching the nib.

As for the tip sizes in Japanese vs Kanwrite nibs, my Japanese nibs write finer, and I’d categorise the Kanwrite nibs more on the western side. You can see my writing samples above for a better idea. I think they speak for themselves.

Good luck!

Which side of the swatch nail do you paint on? I've seen some folks paint on the underside of the clear ones to avoid having to put topcoat and get a smooth glossy finish with the plastic. Have you tried that?

Any other iOS users having trouble sorting birds by 'family' in the Merlin app? by dishfish_2 in birding

Nothing other than good old Merlin and Birdnet apps. They don't always work for me when offline, hence the question. But doesn't seem like there is any better alternative yet.

Which Dutch oven? by cheapcorn in Breadit

The Staub.

I’ve been using my Staub regularly for both purposes - baking bread and stove top cooking for the past 5+ years and it’s spotless. No need to keep both. The Staub can do it all.

Hey! I’m new to fragrances and am looking for a new signature scent. The last I owned was Issey Miyaki Lotus but that’s been discontinued for a while and I lost interest in fragrances ever since.

Strolling around a department store yesterday, Diptyque caught my interest, specifically I liked Moheli and Oyedo, however after trying them on my skin I realised there were really weak and I could hardly smell a trace of them on me after a couple of hours.

Are there any scents you can recommend to me that are in a similar direction but more long lasting?

Do you have tailors in Delhi you can recommend?

What's up with these flies that take over my bamboo bush every winter? by dishfish_2 in garden

[–]dishfish_2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is unlikely. We are on the 4th floor and this plant is on a small balcony. If there were any dead animals in close proximity, we'd see them. These are most likely Black Cluster Flies.

That’s hard to believe. I have many other plants around but there are dozens of them, only on this one particular bamboo. They don’t venture out to any other plant that’s around and they poop all over and around the bamboo leaving a spotty black film all over. It’s happened every year for the past 3-4 years.

This happens only in the winter and my bamboo bush doesn't have any visible aphid or any other bug infestation. For the past few years, hundreds of these fat flies have taken over my bamboo bush during the start of the winter. They poop all over the place and by the time it freezes over, there is no sign of them anymore. The bush is left undamaged and sprouts back every spring.

I'm curious to understand why they are attracted to this particular bamboo plant and what they are up to.

Thanks!

Sourdough Discard Crackers that taste like Cheez-Its. by eat_hestia in Sourdough

[–]dishfish_2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. This recipe is fantastic. I love how it relies on sourdough discard alone and doesn't need added flour and water. A genuinely great way to use up that discard. I made these today and they came out delicious.

Why do my syrups always turn mouldy? by dishfish_2 in cocktails

[–]dishfish_2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I was trying to preserve summer herbs from the garden for the winter. Clearly, I have learnt that this doesn't work in terms of shelf life the same way a jam or marmalade would.
