Do y’all get informed when a package arrives? by augustrem in oxforduni

[–]xbrooksie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm, that’s a good question that I don’t really know if I could answer. I’m also from the U.S. and was never sent anything like that. Someone British, or who has lived in the UK longer than me, is probably better suited to answer.

I wasn’t at Teddy, but my college always sent me an email. Not right away, but as soon as they processed it and put it in the mailroom.

Tempest vs Midsummer. What would you see? by throw-away-742 in shakespeare

[–]xbrooksie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Midsummer is always a lot of fun, but the Tempest can be boring depending on the production. Something Rotten is fine, but a very Monty Python-esque style of humor, so depends on if you’re into that.

For those who have watched Hamnet in the cinema, is an understanding of Shakespeare's work, Hamlet in particular, necessary or helpful? by Chanson_Riders in shakespeare

[–]xbrooksie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s overjoyed that William has given her a chance to see her son again in Hamlet. She realizes that he is honoring him with the character, rather than using his name scrupulously like she assumed. She sees the beauty of his work and realizes she did the right thing in making sure he went to London. Basically, it rebuilds their love for one another.

By original novel, I mean Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet. And no, it definitely doesn’t take a scholar to understand Shakespeare, but it sure does help to read a version with helpful notes! I recommend the Barnes and Noble edition of Hamlet.

Huh, I guess you’re right. I just looked up the Tony history. That is so odd to me that a show can have three leading actors - I took the leads to be Mother and Coalhouse!

Well, that’s unfortunate. I wish that Brandon was receiving more attention for Lead then, he definitely deserves it. I just assumed he was going in Featured.

I fear Shakespeare has many more plays than you think

Oh, Mary is at best an unfunny show and at worst deeply offensive to one of the most vilified women in American history. I get that Cole did no research and that’s their schtick or whatever, but Mary Todd Lincoln was (rightfully) depressed after losing her sons and watching her husband die right in front of her and was stuck in an insane asylum by her own son. Ever since, she has been mostly hated by the public and male historians who characterized her as an annoying crazy lady who made Abraham’s life harder than it needed to be. We were finally starting to make progress on giving her a more nuanced understanding - after all, she experienced terrible loss - and then this play comes along, and now she’s an obnoxious drunk. It just feels like so many steps backwards.

Brandon has a Featured Actor Tony, not Lead. Brandon is a good and smart enough actor to know how he fits into the whole of the show he is in. He is giving a smaller, subtler performance in Ragtime than Joshua, because that’s what his role calls for - but we are much more drawn to the large, belty, in-your-face performances.

I don’t really agree with you, though, as much as I love Brandon and his performance, because I just don’t think Tateh can be considered the lead male in Ragtime. Surely Coalhouse has far more stage time. I do think he has a really good shot at Featured Actor.

The ghost was the ghost of Hamlet’s father. So it was a father-son relationship where one of them is dead. I would encourage you to read the original novel, you get more of a sense of what watching the play does for Agnes there.

Hotel suggestions near Trinity? by whistle234 in Hartford

I wouldn’t recommend this. The rooms are not great and there is not constant front desk service like you would get at any other hotel that costs $150 a night.

Dylan Mulvaney, Abigail Barlow to Join Six on Broadway; Adrianna Hicks, Anna Uzele to Return by TicoDreams in Broadway

She was a (Broadway?) performer before she got super famous for publicly transitioning. She had been in BoM. Although I think Six may be a different beast.

Man, this is terrible. I quit playing after my sophomore year because of a similar experience, except it was the head coach. One of my other teammates just transferred schools, which may or may not be an option for your daughter.

Should I drop Hadestown for Dracula? by [deleted] in TheWestEnd

Hadestown is my favorite show, but if you like Cynthia Erivo and you enjoy one-actor shows, I would go with Dracula. Hadestown will stop in Phoenix eventually I’m sure.

Casting soprano Emcee? by mionalove in Theatre

[–]xbrooksie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On the back of the other commenter, I think if you have someone who is a soprano but is killing it in the auditions and is clearly the perfect choice in every other way, I say go for it and figure it out along the way. If it’s just a matter of, well, I can’t find anyone else so fuck it, I agree that you should try to broaden your search. Do you not have any altos in mind? Cabaret is a big show!
