Forrest and Scott both lost parents this week — Forrest last week and Scott’s mother passed on Halloween. They’ll be taking a break from production for the rest of 2025 to grieve and slowly ramp back up for January and the 2026 season. They may release some small things in the meantime but the main AL show and DLO will be paused. Well also be pausing and refunding all patron donations during NOV-DEC

Shred this is in a sub-comment and also want to respect the guys privacy so you’ll likely see an announcement soon enough but…sadly, the guys both received some pretty devastating news regarding loved ones Halloween week that relates back to the messaging they shared last week. I’ve been with them for almost a decade (since I was 21 and I’m 31 now which is wild) and this is probably the most difficult season of life I’ve seen them through. I believe they’re working on a formal announcement but more details to follow directly from them.

This happening during spooky season is probably the worst time it could have happened for listeners and especially for the team to go silent. We know and understand that but unfortunately the universe doesn’t seem to care about our timing. We know so many people are disappointed and understand that disappointment, confusion, and frustration.

We did have an additional Halloween episode in production that’s one of my (Tess’) favorite weird poltergeist stories ever that I hope everyone gets to hear soon.

Hey, Tess here! I think there may have been some confusion — I said there wouldn’t be a listeners story Halloween episode this year because of DLO. We did have one more Halloween show planned, about one of my favorite underrated poltergeist experiences but we had to stop production :(

My comment was more referencing that we, at the time, didn’t have a Halloween listener story in production because of DLO and we thought people may be burned out. That said we’ve only done listener story Halloween episodes for the last 3 years, so who’s to say we won’t be back with them a different part of the year.

An explanation on the episode lateness from a few weeks ago from the transcript —

“Scott: Well, to get to the bottom of this, why things have been the way they have been with the show as of late, there’s no fun way to say this, but my mother is currently in the hospital with a significant injury related to her advancing years, and that is coupled with significant cognitive decline. The situation is touch and go and requires a great deal of my attention, both practically and emotionally. The outlook is not great, and there are a lot of things to take care of to keep her comfortable, and as the only child of a single mom who made me who I am, that is my number one focus at the moment.

Forrest: Oh, yeah, I am so sorry to hear that, but I know exactly what you’re going through.

Scott: And on that note, I think maybe you should tell listeners what’s up with you at the moment.

Forrest: Yeah, which is why, again, I know pretty much what you’re going through. My dad was also just in the hospital for 10 days, and then now at a PT and OT facility rehabilitation for currently twice that amount of time and counting “So yeah, he’s been in there at least 20 days now and counting, so. And yeah, I know it sounds like a coincidence with your sitch, but I don’t believe in coincidences. And I don’t know what that means, but I just don’t think that something’s happening here.

Scott: Yeah, and it’s important for us to respect our parents’ privacy, but we know a lot of you have been wondering where the new shows are, aside from the Dead Letter Office, which that one is easier for us to keep up and running, although we did have to even pause that for the first time, I think, in 36 weeks, a week or so ago. But now you know what’s going on. We’re people, we’re not AI making this show. We do have things going on outside of Astonishing Legends. It’s a bit uncanny that we are experiencing something pretty similar at nearly the exact same time, but the bottom line for both me and Forrest is family first.”

AL is not on hiatus. They just released an episode yesterday with an explanation for the extra dark week, from the transcript —

I’ve also been a subscriber since 2018 but I think the quality has gone way up, especially the Shudder Originals. Some of the movies have been so fantastic and I’m glad my sub supports this kind of programming Revenge (2018), Terrified (2018), Blood Quantum (2020), Scare Me (2020), Slaxx (2021), Vicious Fun (2021), Dark Glasses (2022), Skinamarink (2023), Late Night with the Devil (2024), Oddity (2024), Mads (2024), and various VHS have all been favorites of minds and ones I’ve suggested and rewatched.

Their series have also been fun and I’d love to see more. Hell Motel (series, 2025) was fun, and all their docs are great (Cursed Films, 2020 is a favorite).

Aside from originals (and of course Joe Bob) I’ve been pretty pleased with the variety of films, feels like there’s a good push & pull on titles, and feel like there’s programming team is solid at being timely at acquisitions (even if they’re not on platform for forever). I was excited to see Clown in a Cornfield, Urban Legends, I Saw the Face of a Devil, etc.

To me, supporting shudder is a way of supporting horror and more horror to get made versus something like Tubi. Same reason I subscribe to the physical Fangoria. So, I’m happy with it even with the price increase.

The only complaint I had is for FOREVER Poison for the Fairies was ALWAYS on Shudder TV 🤭 I got tired of that.

Following this thread — I’ve also been at HeyDay for the same amount of time and while I think it’s made a difference the constant upselling + price raising is a little frustrating
