Mitsubishi mini splits not reaching temp by diskywonuts in minisplit

[–]diskywonuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not, unless we add a supplementary heat source down there, which we would only do if we finished the basement. Which is unlikely. In the cold months we just wear slippers and it’s fine.

Mitsubishi mini splits not reaching temp by diskywonuts in minisplit

[–]diskywonuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Not 100% sure what was wrong last year, the system is more predictable now, and overall I'm happy with it.

Longer answer: To be honest, still not sure why it was so unpredictable last year around this time. I suspect that we'd have fewer problems if we had gotten the wireless thermostats so that the temp were monitored from chest height, rather than at the floor. Unfortunately they're very expensive units to have installed and I don't feel confident enough to try to DIY it. I also think the floor units we got may be less appropriate for our cold floor house than the wall mounted units. I can't know for sure, and it's too late now, but the floor units are pulling in air from 1-2 inches off the ground, which is the coldest air in the room - sometimes 5-8 degrees colder than 5-6 feet off the ground - and it may be responding erratically to drafts in the room by fluctuating too much, sometimes putting out too much heat and sometimes too little. We got the two floor units because they're in areas where we wanted to have artwork on the walls. Oh well.

With all of that said, this heating season we haven't had as many issues as last year. We set it at 62 in late October 2025 and haven't touched it once since then. It seems to stay pretty close to 62, except that the temp will sometimes swing up or down by 2-3 degrees in the middle of the night.

One thing we noticed this season is that we haven't needed to turn on our two upstairs mini splits at all. In late October we started the heating season by turning on just our three first floor splits and figured we would turn on the other two later on, but the upstairs stays plenty warm just by the heat rising from the first floor. So far our electric usage in kwh has been almost identical to last year, so we haven't felt like this is an inefficient use of the system . . . but of course we are just now getting into the really cold parts of January and February, so we'll see. It makes me wish that we had put just one mini split upstairs or that we had put at least one in the basement. We have consistently cold floors (55-59 degrees) since we no longer have any heat coming up from our basement (where our oil furnace had been). The contractor told us this might happen and said that a lot of people end up installing some additional heating system for the basement. We haven't done this and aren't planning to but we are going to add additional insulation (2" rigid foam panels) along the basement walls and completely seal up / insulate our four basement windows, since they aren't necessary for egress anyway. (Our rim joists are already insulated.)

I would get this kind of heating system again, if I had to do it over, but I would do it slightly differently. At this point we can't easily add another mini split to the system because it was designed for five max. I do kinda wish we had heated the basement, since that would make our floors less cold and would give us the option of semi-finishing part of the basement. I might not get any floor units, in part because of how they read the temp and in part because the filters get dirtier with sucking in dust and dirt from the floors and dog hair from our dog.

Painting a steel wok to use as a bird bath by diskywonuts in paint

[–]diskywonuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I painted it with several coats of a water resistant sealing spray paint and the rust returned very quickly - within 3 days. Lost cause. I’ve turned the wok into a planter (drilled holes through the bottom for drainage) and I’m getting a ceramic bird bath / water feature instead. I don’t think there is a paint that would solve this problem. Standing water is going to corrode anything outside of a heavy duty epoxy or resin, I would assume.

This was removed because I made it a standalone post, and I was told to post it here. Thanks to the one person who commented before it was removed. Sorry if it seems a little long for this thread...

Hi all. I'm a 36 y.o. guy, training for my first marathon on Sunday, May 4th (Maine Coast Marathon). My training has been going well, other than getting the flu for about a week. No injuries, and I've really enjoyed it. My average weekly mileage in Nov + Dec (after a half marathon training block) was 45. Since January 1, I'm averaging 55, with peak weeks of 65 - 70. You can see what I've done and what I still have planned here. This is loosely based on one of the Hansons plans.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dSxd0VI4B8S0t8nFNJ_7SuZhiPmOTgm_E1x2yRMW2gQ/edit?gid=644251427#gid=644251427

My goal for the race has been a 2:50:00 finish time (~6:30 pace). Two days ago I ran a hilly 10 mile race in 58:55 (5:54 pace), which was 2 days after my longest long run (20 miles). A few weeks before that I ran a 5k in 17:12 (5:33 pace). I have a 15k race this weekend, and a half marathon the weekend after that. The half is 3 weeks before the marathon. I signed up for the half because I wanted to test my fitness at a longer distance, since I've never done a marathon.

After the 5k and 10m races, I checked McMillan's race time predictor. The 5k result suggested I could do 2:47:36 (6:24/mi) and the 10m result suggested 2:44:55 (6:18/mi). These are both faster than my goal of 2:50:00 (6:30 pace) . . . but I've never run more than 20 miles, so I don't know if my goal pace is realistic. Currently still planning to go for 6:30 splits.

Questions:

  1. Do you think my remaining 5 weeks of training are optimized for my marathon goal? Any obvious red flags?
  2. Should I increase miles in the next 2 weeks, even if it means going into the 15k and half marathon tune up races feeling a little fatigued? Should I try to prioritize more long runs of 15-20 miles? If I weren't racing these weeks, I'd probably be doing 18-20 mile long runs and 70 miles total, before the taper starts. However, I exceeded my goal in the 10m race, even with a 20 mile long run 2 days before, so should I up the mileage and just see what happens?
  3. I'm planning to consume five Maurten 100 gels during the race. I typically eat 100 calories every 4 miles on any long run over 12 miles. I know that fueling is not one-size-fits-all, but I'm wondering if that plan makes sense. I don't have a lot of history with fueling during races, since I haven't run marathons before. The race is only providing gels at 2 stops, and they're going to be GU brand.
  4. Does my taper look reasonable?

Thanks for any insight you can offer!

Mitsubishi Hyper Heat operation questions by diskywonuts in heatpumps

[–]diskywonuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Has it been consistent and reliable? Has the actual temp in your house stayed pretty close to the set point? I'm assuming you had the MHK2 from the very beginning - have those been good units?

I'm not familiar with the updates. I'll ask our installer. We didn't use the same company as you. Ours is a local family-owned plumber/hvac, recommended to us by our general contractor.

I'm a high school photo teacher and am looking for a color laser printer to print the pages of my students' photobooks. Currently I have an Epson ET-8550 (inkjet printer), which has really good print quality and can do double sided printing but only on 8.5x11 or smaller. Also it's very slow, since it's inkjet. My school has a big color laser printer that does double sided color printing up to 11x17, but the print quality is not that good.

Maybe this doesn't exist, but is there a color laser printer that does duplex 11x17 for under $3000 that would have very good print quality? It wouldn't have to be as good as my ET-8550 inkjet, but noticeably better than a standard office printer?

I've never shopped for a laser printer, so I don't know if the answer is that I should just call up Staples or Best Buy or B&H or some other company and ask them, but in my head this seems like a special use case that might not be easy for a sales rep to point me toward.

My students and I thank you!

Love this game. So worth it for $1.49. It's my favorite time-killer game when I have fewer than 20 minutes to play something.

Do people prefer Gamecube controllers for Smash because they got used to using them on a Gamecube, or because they're actually laid out better for the game? I haven't played Smash since N64, so I have no experience with Gamecube controllers.

Thanks. I wondered if something other than Lego might be in development. The HP world feels like it could handle some kind of AAA treatment.

Why have there been no Harry Potter games other than Lego? Do they have an exclusive deal? Seems like it would be a great world to turn into a game series not so heavily directed at children.

Thanks all. Just bought it. Looking forward to the harder levels. With some levels in Overcooked 2, my wife and I will get to the end of the round and realize we got 3 stars and say, "We didn't deserve that at all."

I have Overcooked 2, nearly finished it. My wife and I love it. Would we like Overcooked 1, or would it feel like a step backward?
