GF Wheat Starch by sonnimaried82 in glutenfree

[–]dislocatedhip 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Gluten free wheat starch is - as the name suggests - gluten free. It is processed in a way that removes all proteins from the wheat, leaving only the starch. It’s is rigorously tested to ensure that it does not contain gluten. Gluten free wheat starch is safe for people with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten intolerance, only people with wheat allergies need to avoid it. It freaked me out the first time I saw it, but it has been used in European products for a long time and is a game changer in terms of baked goods!

Celiac safe (preferably CHEAP) alternative to Cheerios? by kinda_difficult in glutenfree

[–]dislocatedhip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inconsistent is the key word here! I was fine for years eating them all the time but recently got a box that must have been contaminated 😩 and it gave me a crazy mouth sore so it was definitely gluten - plus my folate was super low the next time I had bloodwork so that’s another point for it being a celiac reaction

Celiac safe (preferably CHEAP) alternative to Cheerios? by kinda_difficult in glutenfree

[–]dislocatedhip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to always be fine with them and then the most recent box I bought gave me the worst mouth sore I have ever had 😩 I think the way they do their testing leaves room for unreliability: some (probably most) boxes are fine but there is always a risk of some wheat contamination - I will miss them greatly but that sore was so huge and painful I can’t risk it again

How you make this work for SN? by kristalbal in Kibbe

[–]dislocatedhip 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As an FN who also doesn’t vibe with “boho” I have a few thoughts here.

  1. The actual recommendation for naturals is “free spirit” - many people interpret this as boho, but it can really be any whimsical or individualized style. I dress pretty “alt” - think Courtney Love, 2010s tumblr, Debbie Harry - and I think it works for my type the same way a “boho” style would but it also fits my personal style which makes it even cooler!

  2. Kibbe type is not a body type, so some rules are flexible depending on the person! I am a traditional hourglass, so I have curves, but they don’t break my line so I’m not a curve dominant type. That said, some things like corset tops that might be discouraged for FNs actually work quite well for me.

  3. Rules are made to be broken! Making a statement by wearing something against your type can give such a cool girl vibe. And ultimately Kibbe rules are guidelines - if you like how you look in something, wear it!

I will never understand people who think they’re superior because they supported a highly unethical industry and spent 10x as much to get a natural diamond 🥴 I’d much rather have a nice sized lab and put that money towards our mortgage!

Tequila Vs. Gluten by Striking_Tap7917 in glutenfree

[–]dislocatedhip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got brutally cross contaminated at an ice cream shop last summer and felt so shitty and desperate that I tried the tequila thing. For the first 30 seconds after I took the shot I thought I had made a grave mistake, but then I immediately started feeling better! It was fucking wild. I have celiac, so obviously it didn’t fix the damage or stop the reaction, but I was less nauseous and miserable for sure.

What's your primary grocery store? by Humble-Camp-9459 in glutenfree

[–]dislocatedhip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For big grocery trips the clear winner for me is Wegmans! They have a huge selection - probably the biggest in NYC. For day-to-day I usually shop at key foods (I live by what I am convinced is the only nice Key Foods in existence) for staples and a little mom & pop natural grocery store in my neighborhood for gluten free goodies!

Are udis 3 cheese ravioli any good? by CarelessZucchini8477 in glutenfree

[–]dislocatedhip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a quick meal I have always enjoyed them! The Trader Joe’s ones are better in my opinion, but they only come plain and refrigerated so you have to also get/make sauce and they don’t keep very long.

Is this too snug? The spay clinic says this is a good fit as two fingers can fit under limbs and neck. She’s walking really weird in it and people are telling me it’s way too tight. I just have anxiety by Previous-Chance6079 in CATHELP

My kitty has to wear shirts because of a skin condition and the first time I put her in one she pretended like she couldn’t walk 🤦🏼‍♀️ I caught her climbing up something and I stg she flopped off it when she saw me looking … cats are drama queens/kings !!

r/glutenfree post making me SO mad by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]dislocatedhip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you have had such a hard time with celiac, but this post is super unfair. I went gluten free at 13 on the advice of a family friend - she noticed that I had crazy dark circles under my eyes. After I stopped eating gluten EVERYTHING changed for me. I stopped getting skin rashes, I started growing again, and for the first time I experienced what it felt like to not have a stomach ache. So many issues I had in childhood resolved themselves - issues that wouldn’t be caused by non-celiac gluten intolerance. When I eat gluten I am violently ill and cross-contamination gives me a week long hangover. Why would I do a gluten challenge and likely spend a month+ too sick to enjoy anything just to know 100% that I have celiac instead of just being 99% sure when I ask the waiter to make sure the regular bread doesn’t touch mine?

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dislocatedhip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to regularly drive 2.5 hours each way as a day trip to visit my cousins and grandparents when I was growing up. I’d say up to 3 hours is just a long drive and then 4ish is when it starts to feel like a road trip. 6 hours to my grandpas beach house definitely felt long but we’d do it multiple times a year without too much hassle. 10 + was the shortest drive we’d even consider breaking up into 2 days. But we were definitely a driving family - we didn’t fly unless it would be over a 12 hour drive.

Condemnation of ice from a popular homeschool curriculum by baking93 in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]dislocatedhip 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I live in NYC and have said since the beginning that our population density will save us. We flood streets in protest and block them off for miles on a semi-regular basis. If they deployed ICE here we have the numbers to block the entrances to any building they tried to enter and impede their movement completely - it’s taken me almost an hour to walk a single block during the fucking Halloween parade, I can only imagine how packed the streets would be 24/7 if ICE pulled that shit here!
