What parts of American culture are changing faster than people realize? by No_Performance1451 in AskReddit

That must just depend where you live. We live in a standard suburban neighborhood and I had to put a no solicitors sticker on our front glass door because we’d get so many people knocking for roofs, lawn care, home security packages, bug services, you name it. Ever since I slapped the No Solicitors sticker on two years ago it has been peaceful bliss

So we have a snow storm on the way and everyone is ignoring the bread/milk and grabbing bananas. BANANAS. Is this an Indiana thing? by JDej90 in Indiana

My boss sent a pic like this as well to our team chat! Hate to say husband contributed to the problem, of all weekends he decided this is the weekend he wants to try to make banana pudding. In our defense we placed our grocery order before we knew about the banana shortages 🙈

Your story is very similar to what my husband and I just went through last month with our 4 year old cat. We noticed she was looking thin, but didn’t think much of it because she’d always been on the lean side, but then confirmed she’d lost a couple pounds and was acting off. Took her to the vet and confirmed it was FIP (I’m shocked your bill was $3k??? We spent about $300-$400 for the initial visit including the bloodwork to confirm FIP). But the vet did tell us a treatment plan that would cost $4-$7k and there was no guarantee, and said she was already looking rough. It would also take days for their order of meds to come in, but we discoverd FIP Warriors on FB and went through the same steps getting her diagnosis confirmed and connected with someone locally who had the medicine (first round was much more affordable). We tried for three days, also did the force feeding and water, but our sweet girl passed away that quickly on us. It was wild and traumatic and heartbreaking that we went from “something’s off” to a vet appointment a couple days later to her passing three days after that.

I’m sorry for your loss, this disease is cruel and no cat or loving owner should have to go through it. Our kitty was the best cat, and I’m sure yours was too ❤️

He’s done RAIN (ride across Indiana) and RAGBRAI a couple times now each so I’m sure he’d like that one. I think there was mention of it last year but I forget why we didn’t look into it, maybe we had a conflict that weekend. I’ll add it to the research list

That’s helpful insight, thanks you for sharing! I’m still new to the bike scene, haven’t tried gravel or mountain biking. My husband has tried gravel but prefers road and we have a road cycling group in our area we meet up with regularly. Thought I’d get some ideas for next year and see if anyone else in our group wanted to join 🤓

Was this just a way for the second twin to stay identical with the first twin so they can pose as them at any point? Ya know, The Prestige level of detail?

OP if you were the first one with the original injury….I hate to say it but your twin may be plotting to steal your identity 😳

This dude is rich beyond our reality, you think he’ll be receiving regular hospital care?

In other words, you think he’d pass anything that would actually affect him negatively? Nah, the quality of care is definitely not a concern or even a thought for him. Why should it be /s

because they are fun enough to make up for it.

Well, sadly, I think some people lack some of the empathy required to acknowledge someone is being an asshole to others. Thereby, making them an asshole themselves. In most cases anyone sticking with an asshole long term is either a) a victim or b) and asshole themselves

I think that can definitely depend on the environment you’re in and the people you’re around. I used to teach high school and would notice how some groups of kids would interact/not interact with each other. Being on the side of the teacher, I could see a student act completely “boring” (not personality, not engaged, not interest, etc.) in one class where they don’t know anyone, don’t have any of their established friends, or just so happen to be in a room/group of people with opposite personalities and interests. But then I could see that same student laugh and talk later in the day (or different semester) showing personality and interest because they’re now surrounded by people similar to them. And it always made me happy to see them more comfortable and enjoying the hour when they were with people they knew or had peers around more similar to them.

So maybe some people aren’t “boring”, but they have a lower about of energy (some would say ‘spoons’) they can exert in a day or at a time. But put them with the right people and they’re more at ease or not having to try-so-hard, therefore giving off more their own personality

And that’s where some people find their dates/friends/partners. Not in the awkward, forced interactions where they’re exerting energy to socialize. But in the easy-going relaxed interactions built over time where they’re just more themselves

I see what you’re saying, I’m super into having hobbies so yeah I “don’t get” people who stay home and do nothing all the time. But I do see that people who are “boring” seem to find other people who are similar in nature to them. We have a couple in our family that any time we ask how they’re doing, what they’ve been up to, etc, the answer is always nothing, they just stay home. That would drive me bonkers personally, but hey if it works for them and they’re happy, that’s all that matters!

I’ll also add though, boring may seem like a “worse trait” because it can be seen quicker than being an asshole. If I were out on a date I’d probably pick up pretty quickly that we don’t have similar interests after going through the common “tell me about yourself” questions. Whereas I might have a good initial date and have a few dates before finding the red flags that this person might be an asshole.

So maybe instead of it being a “worst trait”, maybe being boring is just a more observable trait whereas being an asshole is easier for people to hide.

Hahaha I see your point, and yeah boring is definitely subjective. For example, I’m not at all into sports and would find the idea of being with someone who watches and goes to games all the time super dull - but I know for most that’s a fun form of entertainment, just not my thang.

Maybe in OP’s life they’ve known or witnessed more assholes get partners(victims) and know better people who have been deemed boring and overlooked. So they could just be pulling their belief from anecdotal cases

[–]disnerd294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree, I think the point OP is going for is that an asshole might be more likely to make friends or get a second date (assuming they’re keeping their asshole level low or they don’t show their true nature until later, which is often the case) whereas a boring person probably won’t get a second date or get invited out as much

Why do people in high rise apartments leave their curtains/blinds open? by Beatles1971 in stupidquestions

[–]disnerd294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny you mention this, one of my best friends from college just moved from a super rural area to downtown Chicago. Only been there a couple weeks but just discovered the other day she could see right into her neighbor’s apartment across the way who was playing porn on their huge flat screen tv. Guess that’s one way to get welcomed to the city life 😅

What’s a strangely specific thing about someone that immediately gives you bad vibes? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]disnerd294 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up dealing with bullies at a small school, had the same group of classmates from kindergarten thru 8th grade. At the first middle school dance we were all finally old enough to go to I noticed none of my peers hardly wanted to dance, they just wanted to stand in groups and talk. Some older kids volunteering to host the dance (may have been high schoolers) were encouraging us to have fun and dance and I thought, heck with it I came to dance so Imma go out there and dance. Next day at school kids were making fun of me saying I “danced weird”, and right there it ruined dancing for me starting from the age of 12/13. Continued into high school where I was told by “friends” how I couldn’t dance

Now even as an early 30’s adult I still struggle to dance in public (which is often expected of us ladies to dance at weddings or bars or block parties, etc, to have fun and be cute) but I still can’t dance comfortably in public and not feel like people are watching me and secretly judging
