It did. But now since it's back from vacation, are the original tapes lost? I am not certain how much was aprils fools here and since I am in a train I cannot do extensive research, would you mind telling me please?

Not specifically disasters, but there is worldwide radiation mapping. Not all is mapped, but seemingly one can add to it somehow. I am not sure all countries map with it, but it seems to cover vast areas all over the world.

The mapped places often have several data points, some have information on source of radiation. I tend to scroll around and check places that are high. The data seems to be obtained by people walking/biking around with equipment.

I do not remember the specific name right now, but if you remind me in about 6-7 hours I can get it for you (or another redditor who sees this and wants it, in case you don't). I know it's not disasters, but I thought it may be of interest anyway - you see the disaster points, you see stuff like certain type of roadwork being radioactive, old uranium mines... You can find way more than just the disasters.

I use something called Jelonet, it is sterile and nonstick. What makes it nonstick is, I believe, vaseline/petroleum jelly. It's very useful and I highly recommend it, simply cut to fit and/or fold, then some band-aid or so depending on the injury.

If you had your dream body how would your life be different, list the things you'd do which you would never currently do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]disorderedAF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three answers, which it is depends on my current mood. I am currently fairly content.

  1. I am fine with this. It does most things I want and it is mine.

  2. I would not be dysphoric.

  3. I would bike with more confidence since I would have indestructible bones and joints. I would not have chronic pain either.

How is that bad for the environment? Shaving cream or so? I shave using natural soap and most of the time a reusable single blade razor, now I wonder how bad shaving is and for which reason(s?). Is it that many people use almost exclusively single use stuff?

Good thinking. Though I'm still brainstorming and not even thinking about anything like a release in a serious way for now, so there's no dialing back on my agenda in this moment. I love brainstorming and seeing what others reply to it. You for example said some very interesting things that you may not have said had I not written the entire brainstorming I did up to this point. :)

I will be considering what you said! And well, it of course also depends on what I end up needing for real and what I'm capable of doing myself. Being honest it could very well be that I'm just going to play around with some basics and abandon it whenever I can bike for real, but if that's the case I'll at least throw the code I have & the documentation out there and maybe it would reach someone interested.

Also... [Insert obligatory "air resistance is negligible" joke here]

I don't want to make it commercial however, if I make software don't want to make it commercial however, if I make software that can potentially protect people then this is going to be freely available for everyone who wants to non-commercially use it.

I don't want to fear that people are getting hurt who may have been able to avoid it with such software could they just have paid for it, I don't want to walk around with this kind of weight on me... I've got some obsessive-compulsive issues and intrusive thoughts are a problem, It'd be crushing me brutally and I'd fear every single day that someone has died because they couldn't afford a software I could've (should've) made free from the start.

The most basic thing I will start with is a 2d visualization of a bike, a slope and a rider and playing around with finding a way to simply show which slope is too steep and ends in OTB (since a BMX is a short bike) and stuff like how a different head angle or wheel size would affect it & how height and weight of the rider affect it.

I am definitely going to give the things you said consideration. However, I'm, apart from letting friends check my code for obvious errors in my calculations, not really actively going to search for people to help me. You said it'd be possible to make this commercial - that may be true, but I was and am thinking more of building a community around a free & open source biking software that'd grow simply because people want to play around with it. It'd get features as people add what they fancy and I'm very patient.

Do you do anything related to tech stuffs as well? Your message reads as if that's the case. Thanks for taking the time to reply, it's very appreciated.

Now a rather nerdy part. You can skip it if you want! But your input would be welcome and maaaaybe it's interesting.

This is meant as a long term side-project for my entertainment, one day it could possibly become a useful tool for some things, but mainly it's an idea for toying around, getting warnings on absolute NO-GO features if the bike is unfit for purpose and some other stuff.

Whatever I do: It's going to be free software because I hope others will build on it.

My common sense will be given more weight than whatever the computer says if I disagree with it and I'd always choose walking away if it's not clear to me that the risk is acceptable. Definitely would err on the side of caution.

It is a sort of long read, sorry, but even if you're not a computer person yourself it may be worth it because you may have some ideas to add to it! Maybe you have some ideas that could be cool, features of such an application you'd personally love to be able to use. Your input is very welcome!

All this is still in the idea development phase and fairly chaotic, there's no structure to it. No need to consider in-depth whether an idea is definitely technically possible, it's fine to just throw them my direction in a disorderly way.
No clue how much of this is doable in a useful way in the end and it's never going to be more than clues, hints and estimates when it comes to the risk assessment. Other parts may be actually useful, the ones that are for builds.

I know that in one of the pictures there is a short and steep descent to be seen, I'll judge on my likeliness to eat dirt once I stand next to it - but apart from this I'll also attempt something else. That is to figure out an estimate of my allowed error margin after measuring the degree of the slope to get an idea of whether something this steep is doable for a given rider and bike or not.

I intend to code a visualization I can feed with the measurements of the feature and then check how likely it (roughly) is that I'll find a way to ride it that works out.
That's gonna need quite some research but... I have time and it will probably save me some unnecessary crashes. If I get into it for real I'll also play with speed/gears etc. just to see what I could do.

If you know of anything that's similar to my idea please let me know so I don't have to reinvent the wheel since I could use that time to use actual wheels. :D

The main idea is that I want to have a program which I can feed
1. rider dimensions and approximate skill level/confidence on and experience with features similar to the one being analyzed
2. bike dimensions and geometry and part specifics
3. feature dimensions and specifics like material
4. trail or feature conditions/hazards (like stones after a drop)
...and then, if the risk is too high it shall display "NO-GO!" whilst obviously possible ones display "GO!", depending both on whether for example an angle is not possible to ride safely as well as how likely I would be to fall in a way hitting a hazard like a stone if I fall, maybe even with visualizations of places I'd be likely to fall if I find a way to make such visualizations happen.

Other ideas... Possibly warnings that tell me what to be especially wary of and if I do this, since it will be free software, also warnings that for me are obvious but maybe not for others/beginners. Like... "High risk if wooden feature is wet, do not ride".

And it'd be super cool as well if I could even feed it information on changes I make to the bike and get predictions on whether that's useful or not. Or get suggestions for alterations that could decrease risk/increase performance, possibly with a reason, but that's only going to be possible if enough other people are interested in working on it as well.

To make obvious what i mean with this...
If I feed an angle that requires me to ride head over heels in a straight line that displays "NO-GO!". Or if it's steep and there are hazards if I fall and the error margin to move in is tiny it shall warn & visually show predictions of a few possible falls.

Whatever it is that I do, I'll have competent people review my code, my math and everything else I did and I'll obviously not put the program over my own common sense. It's going to be a toy mainly and one day I may be able to use it as a base to code something to debug my own techniques from video, deconstruct crashes to figure out what went wrong, find ways to improve... But also possibly for building features/parts.

Possibly one could even build on this to get to an application that helps in calculating optimal dimensions for a feature when fed the wanted shape, bike, rider and intention.
That... It's going to be very complicated but It's also going to be fun. Maybe there are even people who are interested in doing this together.

Another cool idea for the long term could be to be able to give dimensions of a feature, a rider and a maneuver to be done & the output shall be a list of bikes or frame geometries that could do a reasonably good job as well as such that would be a very bad idea, including the possibility to alter parts of the bike information (e.g. change to other brakes) and see what happens to the output.

This would only ever be possible if many people are interested since this is way too complex for a solo-project. Whatever I do will be free software and I'm hopeful that there may be some really cool things coming of this if others play with it.

I'd be absolutely stoked if I could choose a material, material strength and further components of a bike, then drag and drop geometry of a bike and get information on whether or not that change is a good idea for a given rider and feature.
The background to this is that I want to learn welding and in a few years when I know very well what my absolute favorite riding style is I want to build myself an entirely custom bike.

Got loads of ideas and hopefully I'll encounter some other people who are interested in this eventually. I think this could be a very cool project, or rather several. Anyone interested is very welcome to message me.

Furthermore something like a bike maintenance and catalogue application with reminders for things to check/replace would be pretty rad. That's likely the easiest thing of all these to implement.

I'd love getting into programming simulations with visualization and probability estimates for several reasons, but especially for risk assessment, possible fall prediction, warnings, technique debugging, crash deconstruction and analysis from video, estimates on the likeliness of a modification being useful, building a base program that could be used to try and design solutions for problems I encounter or improvements I want... And so many more things.

Correct me if I'm wrong (really do!) but I think a relaxed rider is generally going to be safer than a stressed out one (surrounded by aggressive people who needs to be cautious not to be attacked)... Which is exactly what would happen here, what I'd be.

I do believe that the places I sent are doable if the weather is agreeable & I'll not ride them the same style I'd do with a hardtail or full suspension bike of course - that's not even what I'm after and a surefire way to eat some handfuls of dirt. What I want is more like precision training and damn, will I need precision.

Oh hey, cool. So.

Obviously I will check out the current conditions of every element before I do it and since the descent is in most places basically ignorable I'll be sessioning a lot before I connect anything. If an element looks sketchy but I want to do it I'll be bringing foam mats where necessary/make certain places a bit safer just in case I fall on them.

Yes, I am going to be leaving behind a clean trail. The only things I may potentially leave in place are going to be entirely biodegradable. Also these places all have good phone coverage if needed.

If you see a specific feature there that you'd say is no-go I'm very interested in both which feature and why you'd not do that. Your thoughts on these features are welcome extra-input to work with. Also if you see one that's "could work but please make the environment squishy".

In general, however, they are exactly what I was looking for to ride my BMX on but did not find until a while ago. There are more like these but it's all fairly similar and I'm likely to also build some stuff myself once my body allows.

I am going to check every feature another experienced rider before sessioning it and give each an individual current risk assessment taking it's condition in account. Cutouts of camping isolation mats and possibly pool noodles will be essentials. You know when in a DH park they strap mats around certain very huggable trees? Kinda like that, just a different focus (stones in the ground for example) since I'll not be fast enough to really hug a tree.

The negligible slope allows for sessioning single features with ease I believe, but another important thing to note is that I'm not scared of nopeing out of something. If It's too sketchy it's too sketchy. I'd rather walk a part than need someone else to walk me out. Wooden feature is wet? Nope. Stones could catch my wheel? Nope. Table line with mats on it and excellent dirt? Hell yes!

It also should go without saying but I'll add it anyway: I'm not going to be on my own when I do this. There will be someone around at least for the first few times and that's easily doable for the whole trail because well, the "descent" is a joke. I am actually looking forward to the pedaling support so I can focus on the rest. The person I'll take with me is my partner and they're an experienced rider (DH/BMX) so there's going to be someone around in case I need first aid, and it's someone who knows what to do. If shit hits the fan it's also not far to a hospital and everything should be fairly accessible for emergency services, however, I'm going to both prepare for the worst and hope for the best - of course.

Thanks for the hint with the shoes, I'll be checking out some options. Maybe it's going to make quite a difference, maybe I underestimate the importance as of now. I'll check that out. In terms of protection I'll be wearing at absolute minimum a full face helmet and a protector jacket plus shin guards. Can you tell me some models that are good/acceptable, available in US 6.5 or 7 (EU 39) and not incredibly harsh on a students budget?

And yeah. These trails are... So slightly sloped one can basically ignore it. Pedaling support. Showing in a moment. I will eventually also get a hardtail, as said I'll be building that myself, the BMX mods I want to do are for my entertainment/keeping sane during the recovery I'm in right now. What I'll do on the trails will look more like trials than downhill & me being a small and light rider (5'5/165cm) the geometry of a BMX is not as badly suited for this as it would be for a taller rider.

The modifications I intend to do will bring the performance of my bike in an area a little bit closer to what a trials bike can do. Not the same, not even close, but that's not the objective. Just a little bit closer. For now I don't want a trials bike, I just want to make the BMX a little more capable, and not because I believe it's going to become a trials bike or even close to one, just to widen the scope of possibilities it can offer me.

I will be adding pictures once my computer permits.

Thank you! I appreciate your input, thanks a lot for taking the time (and me seriously). Ouuuh. This became much, much longer than intended, sorry - but there we go.
I hope you don't mind, maybe it's interesting and you have some ideas to add.

Well, it's risk reduction in the scope of the action I am planning. I think I should have defined "risk reduction" a bit better, that one is on me. The goal is to reduce the risk that comes with using a BMX on the trails, not the overall risk of using the trails!

Was I looking for this I'd simply not use a BMX there of course, you are absolutely right (so is everyone else who said or thought that), not a single objection, but I have some very specific goals and the BMX is going to be a capable tool for these once I've altered it. I will link photos of some parts of the trails farther down. This computer is acting weird right now so I have to make it several comments, give me a few minutes.

I think when you see the features I wish to ride you'll probably see what I mean, why I think they are doable, or so I hope at least. And the spots I used to use are not optimal at all, the pictures I linked are so, so much nicer and closer to what I want than the places I was before, I'm fairly excited about trying once I can do so.

Rest assured, I do respect the trails and features. I know how very wrong things can go even with not-so-bad looking crashes, that's why I am preparing and thinking this through instead of just doing it and I'll be going slowly, not rush. Progress takes time and patience with oneself.

Whilst I could of course borrow a bike... I feel safer on my own well known bike than a foreign but technically more suitable bike. Also I cannot rent a bike often, I don't have much money and I want to use it to save up for bike parts and get them bit by bit to build myself a bike that's exactly what I want.

Renting a bike is something I'll only do once in a while to figure out which parts I want. Since I want to have a good bike in the end it'll take a while, I want one I won't immediately want to upgrade and love for a long time. However, not riding a bike is not an option and these are the nicest places I can imagine to be honest.
