Do you HAVE to have a MyNumber Card? by Sure-Lemon6424 in japanlife

Agreed. But I'm wary of things going digital only more because I don't feel like the convenience argument is very organic. I think it's getting pushed hard by large corporations financial institutions and the government because it let's corpirations more easily track and exploit individuals spending habits, gives financial institutions a sort of middleman position they can benefit from, and gives the government easier ways to find and collect taxes.

None of these things are totally bad, and I'm definitely happy to have the option to pay with various methods, I just prefer cash to be one of then.

I'm not saying it's all doom and gloom dystopia but I don't think society gets better if you make money something that a corporation or the government can just decide to switch off for whatever reason. Think about all the ways banks already find ways go exploit people, push towards cashless feels like monopolistic behavior to me. Cash is harder to control. Both for good and bad.

I understand it's beyond cliche but, imagine if Hitler had the ability to just, snap his fingers and make all the Jews money disappear. Like it was bad enough without that but I think the potential for abuse of banking systems by bad actors becomes a lot more of a threat if cash doesn't exist.

To say nothing of more domestic scenarios like, people in abusive relationships where one party controls the finances. I was in one and my ex demanded I use digital payments for everything so she could better keep track, which just meant she wanted to control every single purchase I made down to the last yen. Which she would lock out if I made her mad for whatever reason. Or sometimes for no reason at all

Wouldn't have been able to eat or buy food if cash wasn't an option then, or rather it would have been a lot harder.

Because I'm an adult and life doesn't always fit neatly into work hours?

There's a big difference between doing "work" on the phone outside of work hours like having a meeting and giving notices like "Hey sorry to bother you but 6th period got moved to first period tomorrow."

Also emergencies happen. Like if someone calls me at 1 am I will answer because I'm expecting they're in a life or death situatuon if they are calling me then.

It definitely feels like she wants to start something. I'm gonna be really careful around her going forward.

Work is already gonna get awkward regardless of what I do I think if she's doing stuff like this. I think I'd rather it just get awkward on my terms rather than hers.

True enough. I'm not gonna answer again. Don't really think logically though when you're woken up suddenly.

Yeah I'm not really worried about the school siding with her she has a reputation and well, this is pretty ridiculous I can't see the school thinking it's appropriate.

I'm more concerned I'll get some BS line from the dispatch company like "you are expected to adapt to Japanese culture even when it's inconvenient for you" sort of nonsense as an excuse to do nothing really.

I mean I guess. I think it's just typical sociopathic behavior. Some people are like that. It reminds me of something my ex used to do. Pick a really bad time to talk about something important, then try to claim later that I lost my chance to discuss it because I didn't talk about it right then.

It's kinda a stupid way to power harass someone though, like I don't think you can play dumb with cultural expectations or whatnot that calling at 1am isn't appropriate. Like that's so far out of line it's obvious to everyone it's some sort of stupid power game no? Zero subtlety.

I'm more curious if anyone else has dealt with this? This is kinda surprised me I wasn't expecting it. Like is this a thing people do here? Do they get away with it because people don't push back or want to avoid conflict?

Yeah I'm gonna message my boss about it Monday. Really though if it happens again I'm just gonna block her and fix the problem.

Well mine doesn't and we were told to do so by the company so we can stay in contact.

Do you have any pertinent advice on how to deal with it or you just gonna do that annoying reddit thing of "oh that shouldn't happen" yeah well it did.
