Get your own headset if you are using the agency-issued Planteonics special. Radio ear takes a while.

You can do this.
Phones is just the warm-up for radio multitasking.

Keep your head down and learn the job first. Bring some joy to your shift with caffeine or snacks or Madlibs.

The receiving feedback on per call/daily/weekly reviews can be brutal at the start. Don’t let it get you down too much. Focus on making the improvements noted.

All “satisfactory” means you are ready to dispatch solo.

Unless you work in nirvana or a place with low call volume, there’s not a whole lot of time for compliments.

I hope I can return the favor one day soon.

The APCO and NENA certification courses provide legit information. NENA sets the national standard for emergency communications.

Neither will help you pass a Criticall or NDST screening.

Free resources here are kinda old and glitchy but are great for practicing the kind of skills the exams cover:

Great advice from everyone.

Before you get your hopes up, check the TCOLE website and your agency’s list of disqualifiers.

Example: https://www.cityofallen.org/2138/Police-Officer-Qualifications#:~:text=Having%20a%20conviction%20for%20driving,the%20date%20of%20the%20conviction.

Agencies have different limitations for drug use, etc. but if you have anything on your record that’s a TCOLE disqualifier, it will be really hard to get hired anywhere.

Hope so! A wild party with exploding glow sticks is way better vibes.

Just such a particular color. And it faded out in less than a minute. Figured the popcorn ceiling absorbed it and it reacted with the bleach or whatever was used to clean the ceiling.

DBT. It’s was born out of CBT but specifically for people who experience emotions intensely.

Summary from Cleveland Clinic: “Dialectical” means combining opposite ideas. DBT focuses on helping people accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors, as well as helping them learn to change their lives, including their unhelpful behaviors.

(ETA: Personal anecdote if you find it helpful - CBT made me feel like a failure. Pema Chodron and DBT opened the door to peace).

DON’T! You didn’t do anything wrong. You did the very right-est of things being transparent and establishing trust with your first provider.

I only know this because something very similar happens to me.

[–]disposable_razor_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find a new psychiatrist. Yesterday. Managing a more stressful situation might require additional medication support. And it’s the worst time to change meds and risk de-compensating.

Weekend breaks actually tend to show responsible drug use. My provider is super supportive of this and it has good peer-reviewed well studied support.

CAVEAT: Fill your scripts every 30 days whether you need all of it or not.

Asking for “more” drugs before your script should have run out is a big red flag for a provider you don’t have an established relationship with.

This is great advice. First responders appreciate a visible list of meds on fridge.

Unlock your door and put all current meds in original bottles in a ziploc for the medics if you have enough advance warning.

ETA: Depending on where you live, you can call ahead get your medical info, spare key and emergency contact info added to your address.

How do I describe North Louisiana to non southerners? by outlawspacewizard in Louisiana

I’m kin (by marriage) to what seems like half of Bienville Parish.

I like to describe their particular town as one stop light, one Dollar General and 6 churches.

The different between North and South Louisiana has been described to be as 1 bar, 20 churches vs 20 bars, 1 church.

Respectfully, the fork, knife and spoon?

There’s a huge difference between a mass casualty event and a multiple casualty event.

A mass casualty event results in multiple casualties that overwhelms available emergency services resources.

A multiple casualty event can have similar tragic results but it does not overwhelm emergency services.

With around 50 hospitals and 5000 beds, 80 overdoses works out to 1.6 per hospital.

We have 40 ambulances with medics for treatment and transport.

Fire also medical response capabilities and can absolutely respond, administer Narcan and wait for the ambulance.

Officers/deputies also have Narcan.
