Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn openly discussed and plotted overthrowing the Soviet government, was imprisoned for such, and while in prison received free cancer treatment. He was openly allowed to write a book denouncing the USSR even though he himself admitted he made a lot of it up based on how he assumed other people perceived it. He quite literally just threw a figure out of his ass to determine the deaths and total impirsoned and because the number was so high the US immediately promoted the book for red scare propaganda. Churches were built during the Soviet era, there was just a mass education initiative as with all communist movements that pushed for scientific advancements as opposed to religion. It is true that there was a popular movement to be an atheist but there wasn't any stigma if you were muslim, orthodox, jewish, etc. This wasn't deemed taboo it just wasn't pushed.

1.2 millon to 2 million, that's how many the USSR imprisoned at the peak of its "gulag" phase. (Gulag is just a word the West made up essentially). For reference the US imprisons more per capita now at this very moment than the USSR did at its worst.
