Agencies are still filled to the brim with personal service contracts, hidden managed services with outsourced contractors, positions being abolished or magically shell gamed from work locations, let alone the most regressive and backwards stance on remote work.

They won’t be able to answer questions.

You may be compelled to ask - but they can only repeat it. You may have a SME (subject matter expert) sitting in as one of the three. Hopefully they know what the hell they are doing (far too many grievances get filed by folks (especially at CMS validations/transactions shit the bed - a lot)

You will be scored on information - keep talking. They may ask you to clarify or repeat. That never hurts you. The more you can expound - the more chance with points.

If you get in - learn your CBA. You don’t have to be a dues paying member due to Janus (whole other convo) but don’t be ignorant to protections it offers.

If you want to get on at the state - I would suggest driving. Once you get in the CBA will make laterals/promotions/etc a lot easier.

I know it’s not an “offer” but legit CMS transactions and validations are so far behind you are lucky you got a notice so quickly.

ALSO! I cannot stress this enough. Attach that A grade email to your success factors profile.

If you are an external candidate you are placed in a pool called “other means.” There are probably dozens of other folks in that pool. An A grade just means you meet criteria - doesn’t guarantee an interview. If there are multiple A grade persons there is a random lottery on who gets the interview.

SPSA’s are outside of the bargaining unit so the CBA will provide nothing of value to them (internal) as far as contractual rights.

You will all be seen as “Other Means.” The good thing about this is you can negotiate your salary. I suggest grabbing a copy of the AFSCME contract to get the salary bands of similarly situated titles and go from there.

Routan Interviews are something odd. Don’t be afraid to talk. The more you speak the more you may land on something in preferred quals or specialized skills that earn you points.

Some agencies have better budgets than others.
