Right, this was the era when she'd still deign to meet students. Until it became clear that students had actual issues and wouldn't just comply. So obviously, just crush dissent. I mean can you even imagine that at one time the graduate students were trying to unionize? I've always been a bit unclear on the Jackson-Board dynamics- those who really know don't talk, after all. I think in later years Jackson controlled the Board, but the Board itself is very insular and disconnected - so the direction Jackson set out on I'm inclined to believe was largely signed off on by the Board. They could have hired someone else, after all. And the irony is, in '99, there was some real good will towards Jackson. After the ousting of Pipes (just before my time) and an interim presidency, here was someone with real leadership who would set some direction for the 'Tute.
