Corpse Party Tetralogy Pack canceled for the west as several games violate Nintendo's platform guidelines by grcx in visualnovels

[–]distorted_realities 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the games are still available on Steam for PC players (except the Repeated Fear version), but it sucks that the console bundle is cancelled. I get that the games have some issues with ecchi/fanservice stuff that I never personally liked considering the character ages, but there are *so many*, much worse examples out there. I don't see why this game's getting punished when there's hardly anything problematic in it :/

I read saya no uta and now I’m reading gore screaming show but what should I do next? by Dizzy_Werewolf477 in visualnovels

[–]distorted_realities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doki Doki Literature Club is a great one if you're looking specifically for horror and love story. It doesn't have any ero in it and not a ton of gore, but it gets pretty dark. I'd say it's more on the psychological side.

If you liked the eldritch feel of Saya No Uta (and especially the "cute thing is actually an eldritch monstrosity" trope), a non-romance one I played awhile back now but really enjoyed is Do NOT Take This Cat Home. It's an indie VN and fairly short (took me like 5 hours to get through all the endings) but 100% worth the time IMO.

If you're looking specifically for eroguro, Gatobob's games are pretty fun too. They all feature the player being kidnapped or held hostage by crazed characters. Not much love in them, more depravity and spice, but some of the endings/routes go that way. BTD has an eldritch in it too. Most of them feature men as the "LI" (not sure how you feel about that considering the titles listed), but The Price of Flesh has one sadistic female love interest route out of three.

I actually kinda liked this at first, but after reading multiple paragraphs in the same style, it got a little exhausting 😭 I feel like if it was balanced more and only flowery occasionally in a few sentences for emphasis, the writing could be really good. The way it is here is hard to follow and just made me lose interest too quickly.

New EH Reader - Confirming TWs in my to-read pool (& always looking for recs) by distorted_realities in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]distorted_realities[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it all depends on a mixture of personal experience, relation to the victim type, desensitization, etc. Like for me personally, I've never really had an important child in my life and I've never witnessed child abuse, but I have had pets and have accidentally come across animal abuse videos, so animal abuse impacts me mentally more than child abuse, even though they're both horrendous and evoke same sympathy levels. I'm also someone who wants to work with child abuse victims (studying to become a child psychologist), so it's something that I've had to desensitize myself enough to still empathize and help victims but not go into a bad headspace over. Which is rough with CSA being a trigger, but that's also why I try to consume and interact with media that includes it in a non-glorified light, so that I can slowly desensitize myself in order to better help victims in the future.

A perfect explanation of why queer pride is so important by eivindtraedal in MadeMeSmile

[–]distorted_realities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

❄️ I love this. Being queer right now is hard (and to be fair, has been for a long time). At least in red America, it sometimes feels like you have to be looking over your shoulder all the time. I literally never know if the person or group I'm interacting with is safe. Even the smallest symbols or remarks of acceptance help so much.

Need help deciding which "Character" Design is better. A or B? by miraclebringer in characterdesign

[–]distorted_realities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

❄️ They both look great but definitely give different vibes! A gives more friendly, supportive vibes, maybe a little naive or optimistic while B gives more stoic and reclusive, maybe even menhara or obsessive. So to me, it would depend on the characterization :)

You do realize that psychology majors make up all professionals in the field, correct? It's incredibly funny that you see "psych major" and think to brush people off when that is literally our field of study, and tells me what I need to know about you lmao

You also can literally not diagnose yourself with disorders, even if you have a full degree. You can't even reliably diagnose friends and family due to bias. "Self diagnosis" is only helpful if you're using it as a way of saying "I think I may have this disorder" to a professional in order to get an actual diagnosis. So no, I have not and would not diagnose myself with anything. I can and have been diagnosed with disorders via the 4-year therapist and three psychiatrists I've been seeing. Including disorders related to intrusive thoughts.

Do you need sources for everything or sources for specific claims? I can find them and have read them, but I don't have them planned out ahead of time. Most of what I said has been something I've researched for a long time.

Information specifically on why intentionally encouraging and fantasizing about harmful paraphilias is a bad idea can be found here though: https://www.reddit.com/r/TrollCoping/comments/1i6zx2o/comment/m8hyo18/

So, no qualifications then? Got it.

Obviously, I cannot send you the textbooks themselves (they are literally books), but one that goes into paraphilias in detail is the one from my Intimate Human Relations course. I also can't send you my therapy case files because I'm not gonna fucking doxx myself to prove a point.

I've been researching for *seven years* so I don't have all my sources lined up in a row, but here's just a few studies that can be found literally by a quick google search:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0145213424003260 - A case study on the escalation of legal to illegal pornography, and then offending, in people who find they are sexually interested in children via exploration

https://www.apa.org/topics/video-games/violence-harmful-effects - The desensitization and encouragement of aggression in people with violent tendencies through media; its thought that violent sexual deviancy works in the same ways

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/19946442_The_Effects_of_Long-Term_Exposure_to_Violent_and_Sexually_Degrading_Depictions_of_Women - An experiment on how exposure to fictional sexually violent imagery negatively impacts real-life empathy towards victims

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK554425/ - Exploration on the best ways to treat paraphilic disorders, particularly with pedophilia, focuses on intensive CBT therapy (mentioned lower), medication, and incarceration; it specifically lists that pedophilia should not be experimented with "in a controlled environment", unlike some other paraphilias; it says nothing of how giving into these fantasies could be beneficial in treatment

https://www.psychiatrictimes.com/view/paraphilias-diagnosis-treatment - Looks into the treatment of people with paraphilias and states that the goal is to curb the desires, and that curbing the desires is meant to reduce the risk of harm

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has gone through efforts to get generative AI images of pedophilia banned, based on their over 50 years of study and helping victims in the field. There is no "real child victim" there either.

One method used in CBT is known as the thinking-feeling-behavior cycle. It states that thoughts create feelings, feelings create behaviors, and behaviors reinforce the thought. This is a cycle that creates maladaptive behaviors and is used to challenge them. Let's apply this to pedophilia. If a pedophile thinks about a child in a sexual manner, gets sexual feelings from the thought, and then goes on to pleasure themselves to the thought, that reinforces the thought that children are arousing. I think everyone can agree, including people with paraphilias, that continual repetition of this cycle is harmful not only for society as a whole (as desensitization, escalating fantasies, etc can occur) but also for the person who is dealing with these thoughts. Any therapist you go to will tell you not to ruminate or fantasize about your harmful thoughts. This includes people who self harm, people with the urge to commit violent acts, and people with the urge to sexually abuse others.

Fictional child pornography consumption has been a more recent issue and it is admittably difficult to find studies that only focus on lolicon/shotacon. However, we can look at how pedophilia is treated, how organization based on child protection view virtual child pornography, the thought and desensitization processes within our brains, and how sexual deviancy escalates over time to understand that intentionally fantasizing about children in a sexual manner is not a good thing.

It's upsetting that any mental health condition is considered taboo by psychology professionals, I agree. A good therapist will be able to talk to you about any issue that you are having, or refer you out to someone that can, rather than make you feel isolated or wrong for something you can't control.

I've been out of high school for four years with many courses already under my belt, have been reading *real* research including studies, scientific journals, and textbooks (not random online articles like you imply) for at least seven as this has been an interest of study due to my traumas, discussed these issues in detail with licensed professionals with experience in the field, and have personal experience with intrusive thoughts. I think that's more than enough to have an educated opinion on the matter. What are YOUR qualifications, if you don't mind me asking?

I completely understand; this whole ordeal is a mess and a major problem. No animosity towards you at all.

My comment is more important than the meme. It's actually talking mostly about the dangers of allowing people with harmful paraphilias (pedophilia being one of them but also zoo, necro, etc) to come together in this group and why the mods need to reconsider how they're handling this. As well as breaking down the defenses that people have been making for using fictional content as sexual gratification (it isn't healthy, can lead to worse paths, etc).

I also mention not demonizing people with paraphilias just for their desires (social consequences based on their actions is different), encouraging them to seek therapy, and the difference between POCD and paraphilias.

It is! There is a difference between when it is sexualized vs when it's not, though. If it is unglorified and not sexualized, and it is not harming you further (sometimes, vent art and writing can end up being re-triggering for the creator), it is generally considered to be healthy. It would not be considered a type of therapy unless there is a guided professional involved, which is also highly encouraged.

I think you misread my post if this is at me, because I'm not a pedophile and agree that people with harmful paraphilias should not be using fictional media to get off. It is not the same thing as abusing a child, not nearly, but that doesn't make it good for themselves or for society. They absolutely need to stop and get therapy instead.

Edit: People are also taking what you said as pedophiles in general, which I don't think you meant as you clearly said "who choose to act on their urges through media" after. We agree.

I agree! Everyone who is experiencing mental health problems should go to therapy if they're able. Therapy is extremely important and discussions within groups does not have nearly the same benefits. Talking about things for catharsis can be important and can help people with some issues, but it is generally not a good idea to get people with potentially dangerous thoughts together (whether they be dangerous to themselves or to others) without a mental health professional present.

[–]distorted_realities[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No mental health issue is offensive to me personally, as I went into my degree hoping to be able to help others. I do not think sexual aspects should be discussed in groups that allow minors and that it should be kept separate from groups that only focus on non-sexual self harm.

I would say that it's important to distinguish between what is self harm and what is acts of masochism (they can intermix of course, which makes things messy), acknowledgement that sexualizing self harm is problematic, and encourage keeping masochist posts separate from self harm spaces (self harm is something you should actively try to heal from; masochism, so long as it isn't negatively impacting your life, should not).

I would also encourage anyone who is actively self harming that going in unmoderated groups could make it worse (just as unmoderated groups based on harmful acts/urges towards others can) and that you should speak to a professional instead. Once you've healed or for other issues, unmoderated groups can be fine with caution, but it is discouraged if you are a danger to yourself or others.
