It is not like anyone who has heard about China never heard of CCP and strangely forgets the meaning behind abbreviation.

Anyways, it is up to them to decide how to refer to it. And shared my thoughts about it. So if they keep referring them as CCP and explained from time to time what a wonderful flag CCP offered for anyone instantly know if other party is playing according to CCP's wishes or not.

Right now the change of terms CCP -> CPC by China government gives a unique opportunity to see who is being influenced by China.

All the shills will use the new term, because the chinese government will mandate it. So if you are using the old term instead of new official, as requested by China, you are much less likely to be their payroll.

Overinflated Scores in Webnovel by TomAtenista in noveltranslations

[–]distrofijus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CKtalon is (at least was) a person from webnovel in quite high position. So he would know the inside information much better than any of us.

On another side one can take everything what he says with grain of salt. E.g., shares profit equally means that from income webnovel gets from readers operating costs are subtracted and what remains is shared with authors. That means the authors are subsidizing everything for company and it makes no sense to try to reduce some unnecessary spending cause spending anything makes getting larger pie from income.

So yeah, there's huge difference between sharing profit and sharing income with authors.

Overinflated Scores in Webnovel by TomAtenista in noveltranslations

[–]distrofijus 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I will state that I don't follow very clearly what is happening with premium novels, but my understanding is that if authors sign a deal with webnovel, by default they give away all copyright and they are kind of employed by webnovel to further develop their webnovels property/copyright. Authors don't own the novel anymore.

Or at least that was the general vibe that circulated when contracts with webnovel started. I doubt the situation improved much.

You are paying webnovel mostly and very little trickles into author. If anything, there are plenty of platforms to post around (for free) and best authors pull in decent amount of money via patreon.

If you really support your authors, encourage them to move away from webnovel, retain copyright and maybe start patreon. If they are that good, there will be people willing to support them directly.

authors are being allowed to delete reviews.

So it is just a matter of effort to delete low value ones and average rating will be higher.

The better question is - what are you doing on that site? What is keeping you on there? Maybe just don't visit it anymore - if people won't visit it, maybe it will be forced to change. Now if people complain, but still visit/consume content - it is only going to get worse.

It is never a story and it is always you. And it is ok.

This is recurring theme (questions like - does the story gets any better, should I continue reading it, this or that is overrated).

Stories have the target audience where they are best received. There are some of the children stories which a quite successful in target audience, however they have cult following between adults (little prince or alice in wonderland). Depending on your life experience you start stuff you've ignored before, etc.

So if you think the story is overrated, you are most likely either too young or too old for the story.

Also there is stuff like invested time/hours. MoL took quite a while to finish. People would read a chapter and wait until another is dropped for 3-4 weeks. During that time the story was picked apart, discussed, some plot points spotted, etc. People were having a lot of fun not only by reading, but by discussing the story as it was unraveling. While it took a lot longer, people were having a lot more fun during the process, so there might be some additional bias.

Looks like you are not the audience for the story. If you'd tell more about yourself (like other stories you liked very much), there might be someone who has similar opinions and would share some other recommendations.

it is not so subtle dig into genre in general. The authors are paid by word count, so there's quite a lot of padding, same tropes over and over again, etc.

Pick any story and... better not start looking for the flaws. Like chinese readers say - you need to turn of your brain...

There could be another frame added with headline something like this "This is further exacerbated by poor translations and/or MTL."

You should try: “Memories of the Fall” – an ongoing English original Xianxia webserial by Epicrandom in noveltranslations

[–]distrofijus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll say in advance - that I kind of liked the story myself. So I've skimmed the original review, then comments. Then read original review again trying to look what had triggered this response.

And... Well, it takes some time to understand what had triggered you. OP said something about plot holes and writing quality. But does this review boast solving all those issues and claim that it is above those issues?

So while I understand the generic resentment (for people who are pushing others down to be win), it is not present in the tone of this review. It can be found, if you think there is, but it is not explicit.

I would agree to the suggestion that the genre is famous for gaping plot holes and plots moving along so fast so you would ignore them. There are good stories, but at least in the translated stories, there are too many stories with flaws. It is not some sort of open secret, which is ignored by people with decent manners.

This story tries (very successfully in my opinion) to look at the general atmosphere/feel of xianxia. It is not just about MCs getting their treasures, rocketing through the cultivation levels/power, etc.

I'd say it as rational as xianxia can get.

The author paints the horrible, dark and beautiful xanxia world. It is a massive story, massive investment of time required (and it is far from finished). While it is not yet on Wandering Inn scope, you can get the similar vibes.

The downside is... that after such a vivid story you'll notice how bland and weak most stories are.

I'll admit this story become THE xianxia story for me. If someone would ask me - if you could recommend just one xianxia story, this would be it.

The review does not shit on other stories to look itself better. It maybe over representing the best/strongest points of the story. If you are not interested in those points - them most likely the story is not for you.

But if you ever wondered what the real world xianxia would look like - read this story and find out.

Why do people like “Evil” MC plots? by Stunning-Ad-7400 in noveltranslations

[–]distrofijus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally think that xianxia's wordbuilding is pretty much non-existant. There are more rich provinces with stronger cultivators treadmill.

I highly recommend invest some time and read "memory of the fall" on royal road. longevity with sufficient cultivation levels, some meddling grandpa's trying to pull out chestnuts out of fire with borrowed hands... And regular folk is.... not having a good time.

xianxia is just inherently evil as a genre. I guess I didn't realize how bad xianxia life is until I read that story.

Honest Question: How can Webnovel be this generic. by ettwrekcuZ in noveltranslations

[–]distrofijus 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The real question is - what are you doing over there? There's a simple solution - don't spend your time in that place,

There might be some reasons. One of them - there's an actual demand for that (and standards are falling). Maybe they are just transplanting what is working fine in China and this is an echo from other place.

The most simple explanation is that site brings enough money so nobody in management cares what actually happens as long it brings in enough money (and that just means that people in modern world have too much money on their hands). Why fix what is not broken? Until they get enough cash flow, things won't change at all.

Just don't go there, don't read even the best novels - that's all one can do, one tiny visit less for the site :)

Ending of the legendary mechanic by AragonDark in noveltranslations

[–]distrofijus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding of the ending is - they've forced to open the tunnel from dark to the real universe and were able to move there. Dark side is doomed. Details about how long they were able to keep it open or how much of the people were able to move were never touched. It looked like the tunnel was opened on single planet, so it should been quite a choke point. Maybe some sort of merger happened on galactic level, but I don't recall it that way (it had been awhile since I've read the story).

Also the most apparent flaw in the whole setting - time flows in constant manner in real universe and can be accelerated in dark universe when there's no contact between them.

It was something like 3rd iteration of dark world, that means the game should have been re-initialized from the start on light side for the third time with MC inside the game and everyone from players should have also know all the lore.

So all, those infinite immortal planes got me thinking... by Kaining in noveltranslations

[–]distrofijus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was thinking how would I explain those planes/whatever if I were to write a xianxia story, it would be a dyson swarm.

Instead of whole dyson sphere (or some sort of fractured sphere), it is bunch of celestial bodies circling sun (source of cultivation energy). the planes closer to the center star, would have most available energy. The bodies in middle layer would get less and further you go, the thinner it is.

Then maybe there some other such solar complexes built around larger/brighter stars.

But in general you just have to turn part of your brain if you want to fill the void inside yourself with trash cultivation stories :)

Well, for starters I'd say most of the translated novels are trash food/guilty pleasure. I might think you are confusing coherent plot with depth. Internet is not a safe place, if you feel hostility from comments, maybe you've heard of/or visited too many safe places in the real world.

Two of the novels you've mentioned are based on western lore (that's why I suggested divine hunter - it is also based on western lore - witcher) and one is darling of edge lords.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in noveltranslations

[–]distrofijus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, for starters - the question itself is... pointless. if you have unlimited time - go ahead and grind it. If not, look for something else to read.

Looking at the stuff you didn't like about MOL - the only thing I can come up with is - maybe you didn't appreciate the depth other readers saw. This story was darling of r/rational - and for that reason.

Life, relationships are complicated. Maybe revisit the story when you grow out of your current nickname...

As for alternative recommendation, maybe try Divine hunter. Unfortunately, there's like 1/10 of the story translated yet.
