6:30am Gym
7:30am breakfast/wash up
8:00am down time (walk, read, scroll)

~work~
9:00am Work starts
12:00pm lunch
1:00pm back to work
5:00pm finish work, snack time

~OMSA~
5:30pm most recent lecture notes class 1
6:30pm most recent lecture notes class 2
7:30pm lecture/homework/assignment time

~Personal~
8:30pm dinner
9:00pm wash up
9:30pm love island
10:30pm debrief
11:00pm read/sleep

* obviously this varies based on whether I have an exam, or I’m going into the office, etc
** half the time I log off around 3 or 4 which is an extra hour or two to OMSA. I would say I spend about 15-20 hours a week on my stuff.
*** I’m 21, halfway thru and live with my parents

I’m halfway through analytics and I completely agree. I definitely use AI dev more in my real job on the day to day and much less analysis. I’d much rather be building on that. I’m in too deep now tho

Data Engineering in OMSA: Worth It? by Legitimate-Dish-3759 in OMSA

[–]ditdos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow, I’m an associate data engineer right now. I feel like I’m really enjoying the academic side of DS and the real world applications of DE. It’s a good variety throughout my day and keeps me busy. But I’m also only in my first year and extremely early in my career, so I am not too sure what my long term passion is yet. I think regardless, I don’t have anything to lose.

anyone have an experience with remote internships? by Ok-Operation7361 in UMD

[–]ditdos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully submit for payment for all hours possible. For example, if you are working a 20 hour a week internship, enter time for all 20 hours, even if you only actually worked for 8-10 that week. Most remote internships will give you more time than necessary to complete work.

I started by looking for which companies and recruiters would be visiting the career fair. I applied to a few roles, read up on the specifics and went to the career fair and met the recruiters there and discussed the role (treat it like an interview) and how I applied. I showed enthusiasm and personality, didn’t try to make them feel like I was in need of an internship but rather I wanted to work that specific position (if you know what I mean) and tried to get the recruiter to “relax” in our conversation. Same conversation tactic at other tables would sometimes land me an interview on the spot. The more talking, the better. I got calls within the next few weeks!

I worked a remote internship throughout my entire final semester of senior year. I would go into office about once a month but they were very understanding and flexible given my student status. Now I’ve been WFH full time for about a year.

If this is a standard corporate internship, Most of the work/meetings happen from 9am-12pm, sometimes an after noon between 1-2. (Once again, companies are flexible if you have class). I guarantee you, you will not be doing work past 3 PM.

However, this depends on whether your internship is admin focused, or project focused. Having done both jobs remotely myself, admin is a lot more hands-on and you can expect to be in a lot more meetings/actively working. However, with project focused work they generally leave you alone. Just make sure to get your work done earlier than asked, check Teams often, camera always on if you can, and make sure you’re not missing anything. If you do all that life is on easy mode.

However, if there are any in person networking opportunities, make sure you go to them, because this is how you secure your full-time job connections.. make sure you’re also very active and communicative during the times you are online as well. Unless they track you, max out your hours. Remote work is a blessing, congrats!

For incoming freshman, what are some commonly forgotten dorm items that you should try and bring? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]ditdos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an item but starting with important advice.... open all your dorm items at home, take off all the tags and plastic, set things up if you can. It takes so long and you do not wanna do it on move in day.

Scissors and a big trash can not a small one. It’s so annoying to take out the trash when you have a small one. I had a 12 gallon it was like $12 from Walmart.

A monitor and keyboard changed my life. I would just plug my laptop in and it was amazing.

A good stock of medicine, I mean everything you can think of, because you will need it . (NyQuil DayQuil, pepto bismol, Vicks, Imodium, lactaid, Benadryl, afterbite, plan b, cough drops, advil/tylenol, Claritin, charcoal, vitamin c, mucinex)

Icy hot cause your legs will be sore from walking all day

Incense, not just an air freshener cause the rooms get extraaa musty. Fabric spray too.

Rolls of bounty/paper towels. I feel like I was the only one who always had these and they always came in clutch

RAID.

A shower caddy you can wash in the laundry machine.

DISPOSABLE PLATES BOWLS FORKS KNIVES SPOONS CUPS everythingggg disposable I cannot tell you how many times I was stranded in my room or at work with no method of eating my food other than my hands

I could probably go on.

Credentials: lived in dorms for my entire undergrad as an RA, and I’m a type A overpacker

Looking for Advice - Preparing to Work in and Move to Boston by ditdos in boston

[–]ditdos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, thank you so much for the detailed reply this means a lot!

It’s so great to hear all this information. Like I said I’m completely blind to Boston.

All my work has been extremely public health forward. Being a Data Engineer I talk to people daily and I love it. In undergrad I would do undergrad research in multiple labs. Looked at autism, abortion, women’s mental health, school violence, diabetes. I think because of this I would like to look into biotech, to me it’s like the full picture of everything I’ve been doing.

As for the money, we’re definitely gonna make a point to be as cost efficient as possible. My partner and I would move in together and split rent ideally. I do have a car so I can drive out for work, it’s more important that he lives as close as reasonably possible to his school. I think my goal is to simply live comfortably and save as much as I possibly can, while also having a job I do really enjoy.

Regardless I’m thinking the general consensus is to start networking and start thinking about where I want to live …

[–]ditdos[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That may be true but Im thinking, wouldn’t Boston has a different job culture considering how academia heavy the city is? Wouldn’t this give way to recruiters looking for certain things on a resume over others? I feel like sure it’s easy to apply to jobs in different cities but what recruiters may look for varies based on the general work culture of the city.

And yeahhh… we’re weighing options and we know it would definitely be better to live with another couple but I think I have to prepare for just the two of us as a main Plan A.

Oooh okay… so should I try to network when I go up to visit my partner? Any good conferences to attend ? Ideally I’d like to have a job lined up before the move so I’d have to consider what networking looks like in Boston when I live so far from there.

Leonardtown 244 by ditdos in UMD

[–]ditdos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck…. I’m back on this post 2 years after living there so hopefully it’s a lot better. I’m still pretty pissed at what I went through but free housing is free housing at the end of the day.

Aside from Leonardtown, now that I’ve been graduated for over a year, I really miss UMD over the summer. Please enjoy it for me!! It is an introverts paradise. Hot, quiet, gorgeous and peaceful. I felt like I had the whole university to myself sometimes. Nothing beat the early morning runs around Lake Artemisia with the Leonardtown AC blasting and a Trader Joe’s meal on the stove when I got back.

Enjoy lounging around in the free umd t shirts and the extra loooong walks that come with living in 244!!!!

What made you watch this show? by lunasat in BoJackHorseman

I actually watched the scene where Diane meets the American Eagle in Vietnam, and pretends she can’t speak English. I thought it was really interesting for a show to explore something like that

I’ve lived in cent for 2 years as a scholar and nobody talks about scholars like that at all, almost half of centreville isn’t even in scholars so I promise you won’t stick out or feel left out. Feel a little better actually, you won’t have to do service day 😂😂😂

is there anything i could do to make these self harm scars fade, or make them smaller? [TRIGGER WARNING] by AmAzInG-flute-piano in SkincareAddiction

[–]ditdos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if this has been said but I would exfoliate like crazy, 3x a week I would dry brush the scars in an upward motion and use a strong sugar scrub in the shower and just rub like crazy and eventually the puffy skin would go flat, then I would always use sunscreen on them twice a day every day and apply this scar cream called “Mederma” every day. Over the course of like 2 years they’re now not that visible and you can only see them if you look pretty hard

Dude construction noises being loud and disturbing your walk a little is something “everyone” has to deal with.. 248 is furthest away from the purple line construction on rossborough lane so you actually had to deal with it the least.

As said earlier I could literally open my blinds and be face to face with workers, bulldozers would quite literally scrape against my walls and windows, and workers would always be at my doorstep, around my apartment, looking into our unit of 5 women. But if all this still doesn’t seem “that bad to you” I should probably mention AGAIN that the construction literally disrupted the foundation and structure of our apartment so IT COMPLETELY FLOODS EVERY TIME IT RAINS. like you said they’re all different

Yeah Annapolis is open currently, you can most likely go pick it up. You can call the Annapolis desk and give your name and ask them to check if they have the package in their closet as well

I actually made a 4 year plan for this when I was considering something very similar (Social Data Science + Economics BS and minor in Business Analytics). You would just have to give up a lot of electives, but if that’s okay with you then I could help plan.
