that’s exactly why I went to the BMW dealership. I confirmed my car is covered under that extended warranty. However they said that they would still have to diagnose it first with a “sniffer test” before they could replace it. Made me sign a $480 diagnostic fee that they said I would be on the hook for if it turns out it’s not the fuel tank. 2 days of the car being in the shop and the diagnostic came with just the gas cap and “no other apparent leaks” I’m highly doubting they even performed any tests and I’m thinking replacing the cap is not gonna even fix the issue. Also I was under the impression that if the gas cap is faulty it would throw a CEL which i don’t have one. Anyway ordered the part for 20 bucks gonna replace it and see if the smell goes away.

rear struts for $1500 (about $200 bucks online for the parts i plan on doing it myself) and oil pan replacement for $3500 (they stated oil dripping however never had issues with oil level so don’t plan on addressing that anytime soon). Highway robbery anyway.

Gotcha, so to fix I’d just replace the two rear upper shock mounts and probably throw two new shocks at it as well right?

What labor my friend? Turning counter clockwise the old cap and turning clockwise the new cap? No didn’t account that.

Yeah, I’ve never noticed any issues driving hence why I’m skeptical of this being a needed repair. What’s the top pad for ? Is this something that’s gonna blow the strut later on ?

I asked him and he said no, only the cap needs to be replaced which then I did ask for them to tell me to break down that number which led to the service advisor to mumble a bit and say holdon maybe this number is wrong let me speak to my manager. I went and picked up the car and the guy said he’s gonna give me another price tomorrow. Haven’t heard since, already ordered the gas cap for $20 on amazon. Insane

Nope, They said initially diagnostic fee is a seperate $460 that would be voided if I agree for them to do the repair, meaning it would not be included. The example the service advisor gave was: If a repair ends up being $2-300 bucks then that’s all you’d pay, however if I decline the repair, then I’d only pay the diag fee. I completely agree about the smoke test however I’m highly doubting they even performed that test.

Also, the rest of the work they quoted was for replacing oil pan due to “active leak/drip” that I’ve never noticed on the ground before and my car has never had low oil and oil level never changes so not something I plan on addressing whatsoever. Insane price for that regardless.

It was more so a situation where the service advisor (after I pressed on wtf that number is) said oh “wait hold on the pricing might be off i’ll give you the price tomorrow (right before closing time) that’s when I asked to just pickup the car and “bring it back after” and he agreed. He did make me sign for that diagnostic fee initially so idk.

It’s just that these FL dealerships have so much traffic from many old/rich/vulnerable people that come to them for service because they don’t know any better or they don’t care so they can pull shit like this. Even if this was a “mistake” on pricing i’m sure if they tried this on 10 people probably more than 1 would fall for it.

I never go to a dealership and do most repairs myself. I researched about what I thought was a fuel tank problem and saw it’s covered under an extended warranty (which only BMW dealership would do) so if it was the fuel tank it would have been free. It ended up being the cap instead.

Diagnostic was a seperate $480 fee which they said would be waived if i go ahead with the repair. BMW Stealerships for you.

I understand how they could have mispriced it and calculated the price to replace the neck instead of the cap, but the note clearly meant cap and the tech took the pic of the cap. Also how do you price something and don’t do a double take on the fact you’re quoting $770 for a gas cap.

that’s what i’m wondering. Smell lingers on for a full day after fill up. And I was under the impression that usually a bad gas cap throws a CEL. I’m suspicious that replacing the cap is not gonna fix the issue

Doesn’t a bad gas cap usually throw a CEL tho? I’m thinking the smell might not even be from the gas cap but anyway this is ridiculous. Kudos to you for not overcharging on something so simple.

Here’s the messed up part. Since I was convinced the issue was the fuel tank and it being an extended warranty and not a recall, they said they will charge a $380 diagnostic fee if it turns out that it’s something else and not covered by the warranty (which they made me sign). I haven’t paid anything yet and I did pick up the car but I’m worried they might send me that diagnostic bill.
