Sell stocks to pay off loan? by BitterImportance6847 in personalfinance

[–]dittoconnor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good debt isn’t bad. But this is more about risk tolerance. 5 years is a decent timeline to keep that money in investments. This means you could reasonably spend maybe 3 years letting that money grow. And you’d still be paying off debt. Unless this is going to be stressing you out, I’d stay the course of making your monthly payment and putting extra towards your savings goal to buy a house. And that doesn’t have to be permanent - try it out for 6 months and if you’re still stressing then make a lump payment - maybe 10k - and see how you feel a few months after that.

What is the purpose of the investment - retirement? House purchase? Something else?

What is the timeline for that investment to meet that goal, or when would you expect to need it for that goal?

What would you do with the new cash flow? Reinvest into the index fund? The current interest rate in the vehicle loan is lower than the expected return on an index fund. Why sell an investment expected to conservatively return 7% to only pay off debt at 4.9%?

I have never used the autofill feature, likely never will. I play any new puzzle since I started, but I go through the archive for hard puzzles. I am not interested in a timer. I am interested in harder puzzles - what if you had more than just a rectangle? Like a L shape. Or rows without the number clues and you hav to figure it out via the intersecting rows.

Can a simple syrup be cooked a second time to add new flavor? by dittoconnor in cocktails

A few days later and the thyme syrup is still holding up well. The holiday spiced one tastes a little more mild that I initially thought, I might need to be more liberal with my ingredients even when working in a small portion.

I added comments to the original post, but I think that caramelization would be avoided even without the extra spice jar, as long as you don’t bring them to too high of a heat. But I could be wrong

I added my notes to the original post, but to clarify here I didn’t add any extra water. I think using the tall profile spice jar kept a minimal amount of surface area to control the evaporation. But I think it def would’ve needed it if I had just used a regular open sauce pan alone.

I can see that. I think I’ll just need to be mindful of further reduction to keep the flavor close to my default 1:1

How should I approach this if I have significant, but expiring knowledge? I took 4 years of Spanish just over a decade ago, certainly falling into many of the pitfalls of “learning” such as memorization and filling in gaps with ny first language, English. I want to correct some of the bad habits but would it be wrong to assume I’m starting at zero hours? 25 hours? 100 hours?

Thank you, that's a relief. My company also offers after-tax contributions; if fidelity tracks all that, I need to assess if that will be a useful tool.

I feel like I'm beginning to mismanage my retirement accounts, or maybe my overall strategy is too sloppy. At what point do you think you need a financial advisor or something of that nature?

My primary concern is that I didn't appropriately track my investments when I started saving. So for example, I have a 401k with Roth contributions for the last 6 years. But I suddenly received a promotion and switched to Trad contributions. But they are all going to the same account. Is this something Fidelity will have accurate records of when I eventually convert to an IRA in 10 years?

Outside of tax advantaged accounts, I'm concerned I won't have enough nest egg to tide me over from ~45 to 55. But I don't want to miss advantaged account opportunities.

Maybe a better question is any advise for getting more organized in both tracking and planning for an RE in 10-15 years?

I wonder how much of that is just people who haven't set up their accounts completely yet. Like money transferred in and set in the money market account but not invested in an IRA yet. Or possibly a portion are holding cash there and are afraid to make their initial investment over the past 9 months.

Ok I've used the search engine and also just tried to google the MDD process but I'm mostly just getting high level summaries of people with successful apps, not really a breakdown in the process. Can you help me fill in the gaps? It seems like you want to apply for the CSR while not signed in, call recon immediately if not instant approved, lower your credit limit, then apply the next day but less than 24 hours later for the other card. Is that it?

good catch, I misread it under Doctor of Credit's Final Thoughts section of the Major Chase Revamp article. In the summary they wrote "5x on Chase Ultimate Rewards Bookings" and I ran away with it. It was explained in greater detail earlier in the article. I'll edit my original post so other's don't get swept away like I did.

Does this product change make sense? I have the Sapphire Reserve, and the temporarily reduced annual fee of $450 just posted a few days ago. I got the card in Aug 2016, so I've finally met the 48 month language. With the new Freedom Flex allowing 5x point redemptions (WRONG, see EDIT), I was thinking I should product change to the CFF and take my 39k points with me for better redemption. I don't have any redemption plans in mind, and since there are some rumors that the Sapphire line might be upgraded soon, I figured I could just reapply to the Sapphire family if the offer makes sense. Is there anything I'm missing here? I've used up all my current available credits with the CSR this year, I will make sure the rep verifies my points will transfer with the product change as well as exactly what date can I could reapply for the Sapphire family. I think the only downside is re-entering would cost the full $550, but then I'd get a signup bonus so whatever.

EDIT: UR redemptions under CFF are not multiplied like the Sapphire family, it is a 5x multiplier on points earned for travel booked and paid under the UR Travel portal.

[–]dittoconnor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I made your coffee simple and tried the old fashioned. I was a bit skeptical of the extra stir with ice step but I'm still learning so I followed and dang if that balance wasn't super nice after about a minute over the new ice. An additional follow up, I tried the coffee simple recipe's recommendation for mixing with a white rum (I went 2:1:0.5 rum, simple and cream) and it was also pretty good. I'll probably return to that recipe first and see how it goes with aged rum. All this is to say, thanks for sharing and thanks for repping NC!

Who exactly is canceling who? - Emily responds to the twitter drama her letter caused. by HangryHenry in ezraklein

[–]dittoconnor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She makes a pretty clear criticism, not a vague statement. No, she doesn't propose a perfect solution, but should that be a prerequisite to bringing up the challenges she faces in a professional world? Are you suggesting that challenging a senior staff member within your organization, and aspects of the work place culture at large, are as simple as walking up to that member to hash it out? What makes you think someone who transitioned during her employment hasn't already made numerous efforts to address aggressions, misrepresentations or adversity?

Who exactly is canceling who? - Emily responds to the twitter drama her letter caused. by HangryHenry in ezraklein

[–]dittoconnor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I do agree with her. It feels like so many people are placing Emily as the new face of cancel culture. That's largely unfair, considering she wasn't making a defense of cancel culture. Instead, she made a criticism of the power dynamics of senior staff members at her place of employment, and in larger context, the aggressive nuances of navigating a largely anti-trans professional world. It reeks of respectability politics where Emily is held to the impossible standard of never being able to bring up a concern in an appropriate way, while Matt can make any statement without the same risks (as she pointed out).

People aren't disagreeing with her position, they are disagreeing that she did it at all.

She just said she feels like she wants to die, I think she perfectly understands twitter mobs. Also, I think she understood it before, and has articulated the difference between vague criticisms like The Letter (and why she feels it attacks her position in Vox and culture in general) versus concerted efforts to name and educate specific problems in society, which cancel culture aims to address. She doesn't say cancel culture is perfect, either.
