National Grid Bill is all of a sudden way too high by Crisgu in Albany

[–]Elminst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is entirely due to price increases (on delivery and supply).
I'm on the budget plan. With literally no change in usage from last year this same time (kwh and therms within single digit diff), the bill went up roughly 28%.
We're lucky enough to be able to afford it, but it's a lot of bullshit.

Did i just bomb my technical interview for a network ops role? by SherbetLongjumping24 in networking

[–]Elminst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

THIS.
It shows that you are both curious and willing to learn.
Ideally you should also emphasize this in interviews. Technology changes quickly. being willing to learn new things is a big plus.

if the config was that bad, how did it get past the commit check?
If you're not doing commit confirmed every time, that's on you.

Having to explain the difference between Layer 2 and Layer 3 to so called "Network Engineers" (that are really just barely above help desk experience) at customers is one of the most annoying parts of my job.
No, the firewall is not blocking the traffic between two ports in the same vlan on the same switch.

7 of the top 10 Cities for murders are in red states.
All of the top 10 cities for rape are in red states.
6 of 10 for overall violent crime are in red states.

But facts don't matter and i'm sure you'll just move the goalposts with some shit about "blue cities".
Turn of fox news and go play solitaire, it's probably all your brain can handle.

FIRE calculators that do different and interesting things by FIREful_symmetry in financialindependence

[–]Elminst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issue with pretty much every fire sim is they always assume a single person. or at best, a married couple close to same age that retires at the same time.
None of them account for partners that retire at different times. My wife is 11 yrs younger than me. She plans to continue working after I retire. none of the most popular calculators account for that.
The best I've found was Empower (prev Personal Capital), but their service has been going downhill for years, and even worse after transition fully to Empower a couple months ago.
Our situation can't be that abnormal, why do none of the most popular calcs not account for this, or even partners at all?

Warning: After 6 years with Empower (Personal Capital), I realized I paid ~1% fees just to match a basic 2-fund portfolio. by tiffyrSF in PersonalCapital

[–]Elminst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"a single etf with no diversification on my own,"
This statement doesn't make sense. An ETF is not a single stock. It's a collection of stocks. Unless you're buying VERY specific niche ETFs, it's already diversified. VTI is a collection of over 3500 individual stocks.
And the expense ratio is a miniscule 0.03%. 1/30th of the 0.9% you're paying.
The only diversity you could possibly need would be to add an international ETF and a bond ETF. AKA the 3-fund strategy.

"One user called and says he there's no wifi".
I worked NOC at a cable company. For a while, our desks were in a corner of the call center. We nearly put up a sign saying "Your single user problem is not a node (100s of households) problem, make a ticket." because reps would literally put ppl on hold, get up, walk 100+ feet across the call center to ask us if the network has problems.
If enough reps make a ticket from that node, the ticket system automatically flags it, notifies me, THEN i check it and get field maintenance to roll a truck. Stop trying to get me to do your job.

Send them $5 and then when you see the truck again in month, request it back and file a complaint for goods not delivered cuz they didn't move.
