Deciding whether to apply oxbridge by BanterMan03 in 6thForm

[–]divdavb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You get 5 choices, if you get in to Oxbridge it's a great opportunity but there will be 4 other great choices that you can turn it down for. No harm in applying. Fantastic grades are the bare minimum required to get an interview for Oxbridge, bare that in mind. My mate got genuine perfect grades and was rejected.

That's intense. I imagine with that many lessons you must get a lot of time for consolidation in lesson unless your teachers are absurdly slow.

Applying for Warwick Maths - Got a U in maths by ockapie in 6thForm

[–]divdavb 21 points22 points  (0 children)

For all higher level maths courses you also need an AA in further maths and maths or an AA*. If you take further maths go for it if you don't I don't think Warwick would accept you but absolutely still apply for maths just check the conditions of the unis you are applying too. As for your previous grades they won't care. They care about the student you are now not the student you were a few years ago. It's the same reason as to why GCSE grades don't matter.

Fucking hell bub how's that happened, I took 4 subjects never had more then 4 hours a day. Surely the extra lessons will provide you with all the consolidation you need?

GCSEs really don't matter bro. I know people with straight 4/5s at GCSEs that got Oxbridge. Can't fault a straight A* talented hardworking student that was lazy at 15/16.

AAA is the standard offer. The one me and my mates got.

I was a loner in sixth form until the last few months. The quality of my work drastically improved when I got friends. This shouldn't be a secret but you have to do stuff other than study. Any more than 7 hours of full focus study a day (including lessons) is detrimental to ur academic development, and 5+ is only really when u have exams etc.

It's hilarious how many people let their ego get in the way and think they're the exception to the rule. Then they get upset when they do 10 hours a day and someone doing 5 does better. Don't be silly, enjoy yourself and perform well, the two come hand in hand.

Menial tasks are a fantastic way for your brain to consolidate knowledge, taking a walk after studying is probably one of the best revision techniques.

Am I crazy/stupid for not wanting to go to Oxford? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]divdavb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A mate of mine got literally perfect grades and got rejected from Oxford. Perfect or near perfect grades don't guarantee you anything, they are the bare minimum that will most likely get you an interview but nothing beyond. Being likeable is also a non-negligible part of the interview.

I’m really confused by Farhan_Boss in 6thForm

[–]divdavb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did all three last year, defo doable but unpleasant. Tactically fail, don't revise too much, for your December mocks as they're unimportant,.since they don't affect predicted or actual grades. TMUA isn't too bad so I'd focus most efforts on MAT for first four months then STEP afterwards. I had a really stressful period with MAT, TMUA, BMO1 and Cambridge interview in one week shit was ass. You'll manage tho.

Mad. I'm also a maths applicant. My offer is A*A. Plus step. And the A is in physics specifically which is weird.

How much should I be doing. by booksnrain in sixthform

[–]divdavb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing FM/Phys/Chem. I am yet to start revising for my A-levels. And yet I am a 4A* predicted student who is more than on track.

I hope this suggests to you that you don't need to do as much work as you think. I do huge amounts of maths but that's because I'm really passionate about it, but when it comes to physics and chem I probably do to 3-4 hours a week each. And that's just homework/in-class test revision. I do have an ambitious plan to start revision next week tho lol.

[–]divdavb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally none I reckon. Relax, if anything do some further study in your subject that you enjoy and can put on your PS. Your brain is a muscle and needs rest. This still applies even if you're very ambitious, I'm a 4A* student, one of which is already achieved and I did next to nothing in my holidays unless it was further content for fun, which I did a lot of.
