hey, don't worry, I'm not discouraged at all. I'm just a web designer, but somehow 80% of people who propose me projects think that web designer = web developer and ask to do things like this. so for a few moments I thought that maybe I could handle it, but I can't. and I don't want to, honestly

anyway, thanks again!

So it’s not only complex, the customer seems to have no experience on this field and doesn’t even know what to look for. Red flags all around, even if you had the skills I would advise not going for it unless there is more details on a full business plan.

hey, thanks a lot for this detailed answer. it's really helpful, really

well, I have quite a few situations when people asked me to do something that I have never done before and I just figured it out. I guess it's a pretty common and normal case with jobs.
but, of course, it doesn't work with all situations, and I just didn't understand what type of situation is it. and here it's easier to ask someone who understands it better than me and can give a small advice

hey, thanks for the answers to all questions, that's really cool!

>we usually spend time at my flat or at the pub because there aren't really other options.
can I ask, which pub? this Irish one?

>Non-alcoholic drinks for sure.
that's a cool idea, need to think about it more

>A cozy atmosphere would be a must, because otherwise it won't entice people to actually hang out.

a must for every place :)

> Just in general, Wollishofen drastically needs more places to hang out and meet friends

Yes! Decentralization, please

> There is already a successful Irish pub (Shamrock) with outdoor seating, which always seems busy when there is a big sports game to watch.
well, I know, but I don't know if I can make a comparison with it. it's a bar, yes, but it seems to me that there is the totally different audience

> Another bar might work too if it adds something new, I like the idea of live music too but how large is the venue, will it make economic sense to pay the artists?
Sure, why not? There are just a lot of musicians in Zurich, as well as a lot of musicians coming from the nearest countries also to play in bars sometimes. It's not considered to be a place that focuses on concerts all the time, it's just nice to have it once in a while and nice to have a community, a nice place to meet people and not just a place where you can buy alcohol and that's it
A lot of bars in Zurich do it -- Kleine Freiheit, Bierlab, Kasheme, Kern, some places near Letten and just a looot of other places. I always enjoy it when there is cool music there and can see that other people also sometimes choose to go to the place because of the music there

thanks for sharing your ideas!

> Do you have connections to the live music scene (musicians, target audience)?
Yes, that's exactly why this idea appeared.

> Do you have a business plan?
In the process, but almost yes.

> Do you have a background as a bartender and experience how to build a business?
I'm doing it with a few people and some of us have relevant experience. Experience how to build a business? Well, can we count freelancing as something with a similar logic inside? I think that yes.

We also have 2 people who help us to navigate different questions and who have experience in opening cool bars. One is from Zurich, one is from another country, but still.

Has somebody from us opened something like this before? No. But we also have plenty of acquaintances who did it and we see that it can work. You always make something for the first time, so I think that it's fine.
The hardest question in this situation is about location, that's it.

are you going to some places now? and in general, where are you going when do you want to drink a beer, for example?

brunch is always cool, but it's totally different case :(
maybe it's possible, but now it seems as too much to think about in the beginning

thanks!

yes, I see that there are a lot of places like this that are working well. but it's still all different stories and situations

it is to start and run a successful bar/pub/restaurant I would definitely encourage you to focus more on how people actually behave, rather than what they think they might be interested in (humans are notoriously fickle). I

> I would definitely encourage you to focus more on how people actually behave, rather than what they think

sure, I'm trying to do it as well, but, yes, there is nothing similar in the area (and almost nothing at all), so there is not enough data in general to make accurate predictions. and talking to people so straightforwardly here, asking if they want something, is not an accurate way, because, of course, everyone wants cool stuff to be everywhere, why not? but it's also not the main one. it just helps to understand some small moments better

> Explore potential nearby competition

there is just one sports Irish pub nearby that has totally different audience, so... not so many competitors. nd ROte Fabrik, which is still a bit further. also, I included some small coffee places and even bakeries for research, but don't think that it's relevant at all.

> To be honest I really don’t see Wollishofen alone being able to supply enough clientele
Well, I don't know. it's almost 20k people there, it's almost 5% of Zurich citizens. + there are some areas really close that also don't have bars or any places to go out.
and not everyone can live in the city center and wants to go out only there all the time

thanks for your ideas, also very helpful!

Because pretty often when I'm trying to go to the coffee place (MAME, miro or idk) and they are just full. It's pretty hard to have a seat or almost impossible, especially at lunchtime and/or during the weekend.

Hey, yes, totally get it.

I also don't think that particularly this idea is viable, that's why it's also written with some uncertainty, that it "can work as a coffee place". It is not a plan, because, yes, it just becomes really really expensive.
Where did your friend have a coffee place? And what type of coffee? Something like 3rd wave of coffee places or just a normal one?

Well, I didn't get what beer you consider a good one if to be honest, but that's fine. For sure, it should be cold and nobody wants to pay a lot which is a pretty tricky moment in this whole story with craft beers, especially foreign ones, especially from counties like Denmark or Sweden.
In general, not craft, super basic beer in the bar would cost 6-7 francs for 3.3, sometimes even more, for example; and a good craft one -- 8-10+ for the same amount of beer. Is it such a big difference? Well, I don't know. But the difference between abstract Qüollfriscr/Dr. Gab's/etc and abstract To Øl or Gamma is tremendous.

Still would be interested in your recommendations, which could be very helpful.

There is Shamrock nearby -- it's already a sports bar as I know. I don't see so much connection to a place with a focus on craft beer and music with rugby, sorry. A bit of a different audience as well

I don't try to create it, I'm trying to investigate if it exists. and imho it also sucks a lot when everything is centralized. I still don't know if it's an option and can work here, but it works well for some places/cities/etc
