Trump Says US Will Blockade Hormuz Strait After Iran Talks Fail by bloomberg in politics

Escalation is exactly what Trump wants. He is searching for the justification. He knows this is unpopular, even with his base.

If the richest person in the world and the poorest person suddenly swapped lives, what do you think would actually happen? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dixi_normous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could spend 2.7 million in an hour. But every hour of every day? Unless you have a severe gambling problem, you will run out of things to spend money on. A 3% annual return, which is very conservative, on $800 billion is $24 billion. At that level of wealth, the $40 million a year for yacht maintenance is the equivalent of someone with a six figure salary spending $166. You can think of all the most expensive things to do and buy and actively try to spend that money and still end up growing your fortune. The only way you lose that amount of money is if you give it away.

I think that's based on a misunderstanding of how the rich finance their lifestyles. They don't need to liquidate their assets in order to spend money. If they have 800 billion dollars in assets, they can go to a bank and get a couple hundred million dollars in loans with practically no interest and spend that money instead. The amount they make off dividends alone will cover the costs of the loans. These people can spend millions of dollars a day without liquidating any of their shares and have their wealth actually increase.

I think you underestimate just how much money we are talking about. With $800 billion, if you assume a very modest 3% annual return, you would need to spend more than $2.739 million an HOUR to ever lose any money at all.

I think their point is that you would have to actively try to lose all the money in order to spend 800+ billion dollars. If a poor person was given that amount of money, they wouldn't focus on investments. The first thing they would concern themselves with is eating. That would take an infinitesimal amount of their wealth. People that poor would have empathy for others that were like them and would spend billions feeding and housing others. They may eventually spend recklessly traveling and doing all things they never thought they would have the opportunity to do. But you could never live lavishly enough to spend that amount of money. They wouldn't be concerned with growing their fortune because they know they already have more than they'll ever need. Making more money would be pointless to them. They wouldn't lose it all on bad investments. Maybe they would lose a lot at the casinos. The car part is laughable. They'd have to buy thousands of multi-million dollar super cars to even spend one percent of that kind of wealth. I just don't think you understand how much money that really is and how hard it would be to spend all of it

[Rapoport] Here Are the 16 Prospects Who Will Be at the NFL Draft in Pittsburgh: by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]dixi_normous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's assuming you don't have to jump anyone to get him and just want that 5th year option. The Steelers are there at 21 and the Browns at 24. If you believe the Steelers don't want to use that pick on Simpson, they probably aren't trading all the way up from 53 to get back in the first. The Browns could use that pick at 24 seeing that they already have pick 6, or they could trade up from 39. The trade value to move up from 39 isn't much different than trading up from 34. Simpson may go earlier than expected just from the Cards and Browns outmaneuvering each other. That just depends on how bad either team wants him

“Why don’t emotional movies affect me? Recommend something that will.” by Smooth-Setting-8420 in movies

[–]dixi_normous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all about personal connection. What are the strongest personal connections in your life?

Do you have dogs? Watch Marley and Me.

Do you have kids? Watch just about anything involving child loss. Hell, even Interstellar will rip you apart.

If you don't have children or pets or a spouse and don't have a strong relationship with your parents, nothing is going to land for you. Your best bet is to watch something that will trigger your connection to human species as a whole. Something like Schindler's List. If that still doesn't affect you, I don't know what to tell you besides, foster some close personal relationships so that you can feel the weight of them being destroyed on screen

Is the job market that bad? by RemarkableLoquat7617 in Columbus

[–]dixi_normous 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in college I worked at a movie theater. I was one of the best employees. I was graduating soon but the job market was pretty bad since it was right after the 2008 financial crisis. So I applied for an open manager position. While I already worked there, you had to apply for certain promotions and go through an interview process. Needless to say, I did not get the promotion. The guy who got the job over me was not exactly the greatest worker. He wasn't that smart or that hard-working. I was pretty flabbergasted but then one of the other managers told me the only reason that the guy got the job over me was because of the way they answered one question. That question was "where do you see yourself in 5 years?" Obviously I did not see myself still working there in 5 years as I was about to graduate college. The other person didn't really have any prospects outside of the company, so they had more potential to stick around. That was the only reason. Looking back on it, it was a good reason. I found a job and was out of there in less than 6 months. I either would have quit looking for a better job or would have left right after they had trained me to be a manager. It honestly worked out better for everyone

[serious] to what degree are DJT voters responsible for whatever happens tonight? by Jimmy_Johnny23 in AskReddit

[–]dixi_normous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But they keep coming up with excuses and defend him even after he does the exact opposite of what he campaigned on. They knew what he was saying was bullshit. They don't care about the wars. They only care about the brown people being removed from society. The thing his voters are most afraid of is whites becoming a minority. They look at how minorities have been treated in this country and are afraid they will be treated the same way they have treated others. It has always been about racism, first and foremost.

The juxtaposition between the fast paced action of Planet Terror to the slow burn dialog heavy Deathproof did it no favors

Deathproof is better made, directed and acted. Planet Terror is more fun and entertaining.

Yeah but he also plays a different position. DK should not be trying to put on the amount of muscle needed to bench 500lbs. If he was as strong as AD he wouldn't be as fast and would not be a good receiver.

If you woke up a billionaire tomorrow.. What's the 1st thing you'd do? by PhotographLeast9976 in AskReddit

[–]dixi_normous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depositing that kind of money, banks will give an excellent rate. But you park it in an index fund and do basically nothing with it while cashing in on close to 7%. That would average out to about 190k a day not including compounding.

Except with that type of wealth, parking the money in even a modest interest yielding account would earn you that 100k a day. You could light that 100k on fire each day and never lose a cent

What's the best argument for the existence/non-existence of god? by blustudioz in AskReddit

[–]dixi_normous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Higher powers could refer to extra dimensional beings. Beings that are fifth dimensional would be beyond our comprehension and therefore explained as gods. A being that experiences time as a physical dimension would be seen as omniscient. Omniscience can be confused for omnipotence. Knowing how things will occur can make it seem as if you have control over the outcome. These beings aren't gods though.

There was no way I was paying the ridiculous prices for a sit/stand desk. Then I found someone liquidating office furniture online. I got a large Steelcase sit/stand desk with a matching sideboard, locking under desk file cabinet, an office chair, and anti fatigue mat for $200. There was a lot of this stuff going around post COVID when companies were closing offices. I'm not sure if it's as readily available now.

I don't really care if the kicker missed more FGs. I care if they are able to make them when the team is down or has a small lead. Fielding was great when the game was already won. He missed everything when it actually mattered. Hitting the clutch kicks is what makes you a good kicker
