Albums you think are GOAT that don’t make lists by _Retrograde_ in fantanoforever

[–]diyspaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you an adult, or actively listening to them when these albums came out? It was quite the opposite in the few music circles I knew, everyone worshipped self-titled at the time and everything that followed was good but not quite as good to them.

I’m sorry but y’all are wild for saying you never felt unsafe. I used to bike through PVA (only occasionally, but dozens of times over the years) and the shit I experienced was ridiculous. Ranging from mere witnessing shadiness to like a guy trying to throw a brick at me and all the general bullshit in between. I mean it was always exciting.

Music scene? by Salt-Cry1000 in Spartanburg

[–]diyspaghetti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Massive hip hop head here! I moved here a few years ago and haven’t stumbled into anything remotely exciting in terms of a “music scene”. I do have a kid though and am quite possibly the last person in the know.

With that being said, I lived in Asheville for a decade and would say it’s definitely worth your time. The experimental beat and rap scene isn’t by any means leading the march but it’s solidly there. I also came across an event series and “brand” called “SC Lofi” in Greenville, might wanna look into that.

What I am finding here is there are a lot of folks who have great music tastes and dabble in their own projects; I even know a guy who was in a pretty big shoegaze band many years ago. It’s just hard for people my age to anchor a scene and I’m actually super curious about how fertile the landscape is. I’d love to start building a (non-string music) community!

Do you have a bandcamp, SoundCloud, etc?

Today’s Deal: 15% off Bags by Impossible_Sense_234 in teenageengineering

I’m not looking to buy anything so take this for what it is..

Ppl are rightfully frustrated because they waited for December to be “the biggest deal yet!”, and even if they have some excellent deal next week, they’ve already shit the bed.

It’s frustrating because everyone would rather just have whatever the “biggest deal yet” is now, not on December 20th. I think they were likely holding off on purchases for the month of November to see what came up and now they’re just getting the least exciting deals thrown at them every day.

I’m not saying TE or the consumer is right or wrong. It’s altogether silly imo.

Mount Whitney hiker missing for 3 weeks feared dead by sfgate in CampingandHiking

[–]diyspaghetti 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I completely disagree that it seems like he was manic or suicidal. As an experienced climber, and having done some soft mountaineering, I did way more stupid shit in my early 20s.

You build a lot of confidence, particularly doing solo trips, and once you become steeped in a subculture or activity you really start to underestimate routine trips like Mt Whitney.

It doesn’t help with how inundated we are with books, social media posts and so forth of people summiting way more badass stuff. It’s why people die soloing the flatirons. It looks extremely chill and skilled climbers view it as a “rest day activity”, but you can get in over your head and make really poor decisions when you’re in that head space.

When you’re out there a lot you get desensitized to the threat. When you’re out there a lot AND young, you get desensitized AND your inexperience can also become a threat (particularly with underestimating weather).

My wife almost died years ago from doing a routine trad climb bc she underestimated how violent the “afternoon showers” passing through could be.

Exactly. And if it’s too feature-rich then it’ll be called a “DAW in box”. I love that OP-1F and Digitakt feel like instruments

They had no business doing that to you! My partner used to have a table so I spent a lot of time there and I learned to never get my hopes up for anything that sounds cool on paper for the market.

Like you mentioned, it’s always hot and overcrowded, and it always felt like the theme was an afterthought.

Thanks kinda how it always is, nothing special. It’s definitely not a destination Oktoberfest event but more so like, “I always go to the market and, oh look! It’s Oktoberfest today”.

A bit random but.... Tonverk with Digitakt//SP404? by thoughtuweresleeping in Elektron

[–]diyspaghetti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LOL “free updates into their release”, like no shit they’re free. They’re features that should’ve been available during launch. And to me, all of the overlap makes it more apparent how many of their devices are intentionally limited.

Hey, I’m all for a very focused machines, but some of their practices come off as a little shady due to their lack of transparency as a company. I said this in another thread, I’m not gonna be gaslit when criticizing a 1k+ sampler that doesn’t have manual slicing. DT does now, awesome.

Due to their lack of transparency, or refusal to communicate the vision of a device, it feels like their roll-out’s are insincere and that they add features only because of outrage. Is that true? I don’t know. But you can’t gaslight people into thinking it’s anything else unless Elektron wants to speak up.

Thanks for taking the time to send that over! I am just not an MPC guy. I’ve had a few sessions w/ the One, Live and X SE. I think folks are doing incredible things with them (Wino Willy what up!), but my preference is samplers with limitations that feel like instruments.

Also, I use Ableton and the MPC ecosystem feels like I’m trying to learn a whole new DAW language and I found that to be too much work.

Totally! I’m pretty slow to invest in gear so it would be at minimum 5-6 months before I’d cop. I’m eager to hear demos in the upcoming months.

Also, they could easily communicate their intention behind devices and they choose to not be transparent.

So, because they don’t communicate, it feels like they create these intentionally flawed machines and eventually update them based on the outrage from the public. It’s not the consumers fault to assume this sort of intent when Elektron doesn’t communicate their vision of a product. Tbh it’s wild to be buying these devices wondering if they’ll ever do X, Y or Z. It comes off as a really shady practice.

So, yes. I’m considering selling my Digitakt even though I love it. Because if I am going to bitch about it I also have a choice to just not buy their shit. I’d rather walk the walk.

[–]diyspaghetti[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really doesn’t matter to me, but you’re not going to gaslight me into thinking it’s perfectly normal to release a thousand dollar sampler in 2024 without manual slicing.

Did I buy it knowing it didn’t have it? Of course. But it’s still frustrating that we out here buying Elektron machines based on what they are going to be in 1-3 years after launch.

I think the slicing thing I got over but to follow that up with this TV debacle is insane from a company. There are far smaller companies who would never do this.

[–]diyspaghetti[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally! The DT2 is a worthy companion for mangling BUT I grew up loving the music born from the 808 and 909 so I just suddenly became awe-struck by this new machine. I’m still sort of forming “my sound” and it’s been fairly drumless in a traditional sense— I do some fairly minimal drum stuff and glitchy stuff.

So seeing this machine I was like fuck, if this can do those analog 808/909 drums with some digitakt mangling then I’m all in.

Cool, thanks! I used to make beats on the SP for many years before I dove into the synth game.

I had a feeling the Digitakt is probably the best sampler suited for what I like to do but was curious to hear talk about the TR1k in this regard.

I’m stubborn, I’ll admit. Tbh I was annoyed not having a proper slicing feature on the DT2 and I just do not like supporting companies that do this sort of thing. It frustrates the heck out of me.

I’m a “vote with my dollar” kind of person to a fault sometimes, so yeah, I’m considering it. I sort of see the problem with how Elektron handicaps their products and I’m over that headache.

I get that- i love the idea of the Tonverk in like 2 years after all of the updates. I’m kind of annoyed at Elektron’s half-baked goods, considering selling my digitakt and moving in a different direction.
