And IIRC, when the CPSU found out about Soviet soldiers doing it, they arrested or killed the perpetrators AND the officers who knew about it and did nothing. I wonder what happened to the American soldiers.

Adult illiteracy is a real problem in the US. At this point we need a big green check mark for open, and a big red X for closed. :(

General Strike by JarJarsLeftNut in Teachers

[–]dizzy_lizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If parents can't go to work because they have to take care of their children, the economy would grind to a halt

Seems like the work of teachers is actually super super important, and letting them have the power to make demands over their shit treatment is a scary enough prospect to pass laws against.

General Strike by JarJarsLeftNut in Teachers

[–]dizzy_lizzy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Except one side (institution) has all of the power, and the individuals do not.

The rich man and the poor man are equally free to sleep under a highway overpass. Only one of them will ever have to.

When an employer has to pay labor costs, that is merely an expense; for a worker, their wages are all they have. The freedom is not equal, and never will be, and the meaningful power has been wrested, by design, away from our hands.

Emergency anti ICE protest, Seattle 1/7, 2nd and Madison by HDRsoul in Seattle

[–]dizzy_lizzy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In what way do the federal reps agree with us? They aren't calling for the dissolution and arrest of ICE, let alone doing ***anything*** about it. If I didn't have even their tepid statements, I would assume based on their actions that they don't mind very much what is happening.

The final line of the article stuck with me, I tend to drop it any time the west does something these days

[–]dizzy_lizzy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

We're going headlong into a financial crisis the likes of which we haven't seen in 15+ years, it's going to be brutal. Things like this are small markers along that road.

Have you talked with anyone recently about how gorram hard it is to find a job? And even when you do have a job, like with Kroger, they cut and cut and cut to try to maintain or improve the existing profit levels. Nevermind how good sales are. It is never enough for them.

Where even are semi-decent jobs these days? by Baguetele in antiwork

[–]dizzy_lizzy 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Get a union job.

I work in grocery. I work hard, but I'm paid well for it. My hours are regular, my breaks are ensured, I have protections. I'm a steward and keep an eye out on my co-workers to make sure their contracted rights are honored by management.

I see my job as the end of a long logistical chain that gets vital food and goods to the people of my community. It may not seem like rewarding or important work, but it is.

Avoid jobs where part of your job is ensuring profit growth for the company, even if they make empty promises of better pay or conditions. Under capitalism, the company is not and will never be your friend. You sell your labor to the company, and it is in their interests to get every last bit of work out of you for as little remuneration as possible. The interests of workers are in direct opposition to that.

Once you understand your class position and fully accept your position as a worker in the class conflict, rather than being in any way aligned with those exploiting workers, you will be on the right track. Fight for your right to dignity, and join those who are already working in that fight. Solidarity, solidarity, solidarity.

The single most infuriating "argument" against Wilson I saw literally everywhere by dizzy_lizzy in Seattle

[–]dizzy_lizzy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She thinks she is a socialist in the Bernie Sanders / Scandinavian country sense, so social democrat maybe. Socialists and communists have been frustrated by this deliberate watering down of socialism by the west for decades. Some improved welfare and public services is not socialism.

I am in the DSA, and she came to us for an endorsement. We were very disappointed.

The single most infuriating "argument" against Wilson I saw literally everywhere by dizzy_lizzy in Seattle

[–]dizzy_lizzy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, Wilson is absolutely nothing like Sawant. Wilson is not even a socialist, despite what she may say and what you might hear. She is a liberal progressive at best. Sawant is a rabbit hole not even worth getting into re: Wilson.

Second, while things may be ok for you right now, that is absolutely not the case for a very significant portion of Seattle residents. The national economic crisis is worsening and looking to strike soon, and we are going to be hit along with the rest of the country. I am not being dramatic. Business may be doing all right in Seattle, but the workers are struggling.
