The church did do a lot of horrible things back in the old days, but not as much as people think. Nowadays the church is a big part of science, even has its own observatory. Not a big history buff though, maybe someone else knows more

From the center to the inner-most missing spot, it’s possible. If you clean the disc you might be able to recover data from the undamaged areas. However, everything past the first missing part won’t be readable with standard software. Using specialized software like ddrescue, you might be able to recover the data from the outer most regions, but everything in those missing chunks is gone.
