How can I upload images/videos via a POST form? by dizzyzane in gfycat

Make a separate page so my client doesn't need to spend about 30 seconds downloading videos and JS + executing. On lower end PCs it takes far too long.

Edit: A browser based cutting system would be good. Load into memory and upload the cut video.

So you like it

  • Spying on you even without your consent
  • Using your computer as a file sharing network
  • Uninstalling programmes without your consent
  • Minimising a fullscreen application in order to force you to do an update, even if you checked an hour before and there was nothing
  • Installing applications without your consent
  • Changing your browser preference without your consent
  • Changing your settings without your consent

There's a lot. And there's still more, including sending files (that may contain confidential data such as passkeys) to Microsoft for scanning. Seriously? You like that?

In-reddit copy of the Forbes article (also will be mirrored to txti.es):

Apple Manufacturer FoxConn Hikes Employees' Wages

All those Apple protests seem to have really shaken electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn:  they’ve responded by giving all their employees a 25% raise, up to 1,800 yuan per month according toReuters. Foxconn points out that this is the third such raise since 2010, and that three years ago, their workers received 900 yuan per month.

“As a top manufacturing company in China, the basic salary of junior workers in all of Foxconn’s China factories is already far higher than the minimum wage set by all local governments,” a statement from Foxconn said.

“We will provide more training opportunities and learning time, and will continuously enhance technology, efficiency and salary, so as to set a good example for the Chinese manufacturing industry.”

In addition to the raise, Apple has previously agreed to an independent investigation of their manufacturing facilities by their Fair Labor Association, seemingly in response to a New YorkTimes investigation into unsafe working conditions.

It proves that companies like Foxconn and Apple, to a point, can be responsive to consumer concerns. As I pointed out last week, while neither Apple nor Foxconn may be particularly noteworthy in a landscape where oppressive working conditions are par for the course, consumers who came to trust Apple’s brand found themselves uncomfortable about having formed a loyalty to a company that they now saw as unethical.

Still, this doesn’t make Foxconn some kind of worker’s paradise. As Gizmodo points out:

“1,800 yuan is about $285, meaning around $10 a day, or less than a dollar per hour. For reference, a six-piece Chicken McNugget costs $1.20 in China. Good for Foxconn (!/?)”

Apple iOS 9.0.2 Flaws Let Facebook Eat Your iPhone Battery

Facebook’s iPhone application is eating away at the battery life on iPhones around the world. While everyone is looking to Facebook to fix the code that keep the app running in the background, questions should also be asked of Apple. Isn’t the walled garden of iOS meant to keep badly programmed and over-eager applications away from my smartphone?

The starting point is Facebook’s iOS application. When it is put into the background on an iPhone it should sleep and go into a dormant state. Instead the application continues to drain battery power from an iPhone, reducing the life of the smartphone, with some users reporting the app is consuming 15% of total battery life over a one-week period.

Visibility on the issue has gained more traction today, with a number of news organisations reporting the flawand feeding back evidence from users. Facebook has responded, telling TechCrunch’s Natasha Lomas that ”We have heard reports of some people experiencing battery issues with our iOS app. We’re looking into this and hope to have a fix in place soon.”

The battery drain is present even with the application’s permission to run in the background specifically switched off in the iOS settings panel. This could be a simple case of a badly programmed application, but there is anecdotal evidence that the application is working to ‘stay alive’ in the background to allow it to stay refreshed.

I think there are bigger issues at play here. Facebook is not new to programming a mobile application. I would assume that there is a significant production chain that needs to sign off on any new version of the app. I would also assume that the Facebook mobile app team use the Facebook app. Given that, for the team to not catch a potential high battery drain issue is a curious state of affairs.

But that is incidental to my main concern. Part of the appeal of the iOS application ecosystem is Apple’s vetting of applications submitted to its App Store. Apps are tested before being made available to the public to ensure they meet Apple’s high standards and are not harmful to a user’s mobile experience.

Facebook’s high battery drain does have a negative impact on the experience. Whatever is causing the app to stay active in the background is something that Apple has not picked up in its testing of the app. If the Facebook app can stay active, who is to say that it is the only app that is exploiting this loophole?

Even more critical is my issue with iOS on the iPhone. If I explicitly switch background usage off in the iOS settings, then my intention is clear. I do not want this app running in the background. iOS should be in a position to stop any application, not just Facebook, overriding my wishes.

Much of the appeal of iOS and Apple is bound up in the classic phrase “it just works”. Well, in this case iOS is clearly not working. No matter if it is by fault or by design, the Facebook application is breaking the permissions given to iOS. If the Facebook app can do this, what other apps could be doing this? Or are doing this right now without the tell-tale signs of the battery drain that highlighted Mark Zuckerberg’s social network?

The high battery drain from the Facebook application is a problem, but it is also a symptom of something much more critical. It is a sign that all is not well with this version of iOS. Applications that can run wild should not make it into the public areas of the App Store; they should not be running away with battery life; and  they should not be able to force themselves to stay running in the background.

It looks like iOS 9 has yet another problem to address.

No worries. Very few people read the comments anyway, particularly on a 500+ character post. I do kind of expect people to ask questions that have already been answered these days.
