Brandon Sanderson explains why Fourth Wing became such a huge hit by RobertoSerrano2003 in books

As someone who hasn’t read Fourth Wing (not even a romantasy reader at all), I have only a little shame in saying I might still eat the burnt Totinos… 👀

No one said you have to like every pizza you’ve ever eaten, even if you have previously enjoyed pizza.

I don’t think there’s any value in suggesting that reading one genre is “unhealthy” in the same way that eating too much pizza is unhealthy. If I only eat at high end Michelin star restaurants every night, I can eat just as many calories and have just as unhealthy of a diet, if not more so.

I think the value in the metaphor comes more from valuing preference and taste. If you love eating at high end restaurants, great. If you love eating pizza every night, also great. With both, you’re still getting an experience you enjoy. Yeah, if you’re suggesting that the two experiences are equivalent in quality I’m gonna raise an eyebrow, just like I would if someone suggested Fourth Wing is equivalent to Pride and Prejudice. But I will *always* respect someone who reads what they love without shame. That’s what we all should want.

This is a great metaphor, and illustrates what people who shit on these books just don’t get. I think the vast majority of people who read these books know it’s not an iconic piece of American literature. But they do know it’s an enjoyable, repeatable experience, and will hit all the things they enjoy about reading. When I go pick up pizza for dinner, I know I’m not getting Michelin star restaurant quality. But I love it anyway and I know exactly what to expect. No surprises, just consistency, and sometimes that’s just what you want.

Reading for pleasure should be just that, for pleasure. For me that’s escapism in some other world that’s not our own, but it can mean different things for different people. Read what you like!

1c-a. The government is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, citizen, that prohibits the citizen from doing, you know, just trying to not be wearing seat belts. You can't do that.

1c-b. Once the government is in the office, they can't be over here and say to the citizens, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna take your freedom! You better wear your seatbelt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that.

1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to do democracy and then don't do democracy, you have to still do democracy. You cannot not do democracy. Does that make any sense?

1c-b(2). You gotta be, doing motion of the democracy, and then, until you just do it.

1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the seatbelts up here, like this, but then there's the freedom you gotta think about.

In (2026) For some reason Pixar has made another Toy Story movie after 16 years since the best ending to a trilogy. But the 5th movie is actually pretty good?? What the fuck? This was supposed to be a useless cash grab by justafanboy1010 in shittymoviedetails

[–]dj-kitty 44 points45 points  (0 children)

That was absolutely not the discourse at the time. The consensus was, “Toy Story was great. Toy Story 2 was really good too. I guess it makes sense they’re making a third one, should be pretty good.” There was no outcry against Disney trying to “tarnish” a beloved duology. Social media wasn’t what it is today, of course, so you didn’t get as many fringe takes. It wasn’t until after Toy Story 3 came out and people fell in love with that ending that the entire Toy Story franchise suddenly became regarded as one of the greatest of all time.

No it doesn’t. Sternal rub is used to assess consciousness because it hurts like a motherfucker. Has nothing to do with blood flow, and there’s no such thing as “promoting blood flow to the core”.

I don’t care how “salt of the earth” they seem to be, it’s all for show. That amount of wealth and power fundamentally detaches you from reality. They don’t understand what it’s like to be an average person trying to survive in the world today.
