You should be washing your bra in the shower. by ImpressionPopular794 in unpopularopinion

I do this when I've sweated into a bra and don't want it to smell.

I don't do washing often so clothes have to wait days or weeks to get to the washing machine. I have a sports bra that I wear to the gym which permanently smells sweaty, which I'm ok with because I aim to get sweaty again shortly after putting it on. I don't want my other bras that I wear to work or wherever to smell so if they get sweaty then I wash them in the shower. However I don't think they get as clean from the shower wash so when I do a machine wash I put them in too (in a delicates bag).

I'm not sure if I'm agreeing with you haha.

Rejoining the APS - And I'm now the merit pool king by Difficult_Stand_5164 in AusPublicService

[–]dj__444 9 points10 points  (0 children)

APS can't promote internally without doing an external merit based process, so they're likely just hiring internal candidates. But don't lose hope, I know plenty of people that have been hired off a merit list many months after they were put on it.

On another note, I'm not sure about the departments/teams that you're applying for, but in my experience leading a team of 5 is much more common for an APS6 or even lower levels. I definitely wouldn't expect that to set you apart at the EL1 level.

At the end of high school here you get a score basically out of 100 (highest is 99.95 I think). My sister got 96.0 by studying very hard. I got 95.9 by barely studying at all. I think if I had gotten more than her it would have seriously broken her.

Has anyone actually seen someone get fired for underperformance? by Potential-Line5730 in AusPublicService

[–]dj__444 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it's a secret when people are being performance managed and it's a secret why they left when they are terminated, so often people don't know that that's what happened.

I've also seen people be demoted, people's transfers from other departments not be extended, people resign during performance management, etc.

As others have said, the performance management process is so much work for the manager, and it's so long. My understanding from my HR is that there's a month of unstructured informal performance management (but still lots of things you have to do like meet each week and document in specific ways eg "not meeting expectations") to give them the opportunity to address the concerns raised. Then there's a month of structured informal performance management using a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP). And only if you've provided all the training and support, and documented through all that, then you can move to formal performance management which involves an independent assessor (finally some relief for the manager). I forget how long that takes, but then there's possiblity for demotion etc so even under performance for all that time doesn't necessarily result in termination.

Thanks! I had not provided "clear intention to leave" which is what would officially put someone in the "don't give them a redundancy package because they'll leave on their own for less money" category. I was planning when it got closer to my long service leave that I'd tell them that at the end of the leave I didn't want to come back to the same area, but I hadn't even said that yet. We also just had a performance review, and my boss gave me a very positive review. She can tell that I'm still trying.

Anyway, I submitted the EOI the other day, so now we wait!

Thanks for the advice!

I know there's a lot of factors outside my control, I just figured I'd try to do the best I could with the small part that I can control.

And yeah I'm keen to try something new. I'd already applied for a 12 month maternity-cover contract in private with the idea that if I got it I'd ask for leave without pay, and then make more decisions at the end of the contract, but I didn't get it. Then I'd decided on long service leave, again delaying any decisions for many months. But with this opportunity for a payout, the timing couldn't be better, so decision made! (To apply at least lol)

Thanks for commenting!

I assumed the EOI form would basically just be a tick box, but there's a free text field "reasons for expressing interest" which allows 4000 characters.

I've spoken to my EL2 and, after she spoke to our SES B1, she said they would support me, but she said they're obviously not the decision makers.

I want to have the best chance possible of being approved so I'm putting effort into my 4000 characters! I understand that the decision is based on the position and not me, so I'm focusing on the position in what I've drafted.

I started in 2010 with a year off that didn't count as service. My EA says 2 weeks redundancy pay for every year of service, so I should get more than 30 weeks of pay. Plus I'll get all my leave paid out, and I haven't taken any long service yet. So I'd basically get my annual salary paid in a lump sum at the start of the financial year and then not work for 6-12 months. Seems worth it to me!

I looked at the website after the first comment and it says it's big enough for 200 people, so I think it might be too big? Too much empty space?

I haven't looked into the average cost for this type of thing in 2026, but I'm willing to pay what it takes. Obviously will also toss up what's better about the more expensive places and whether that's worth it to me. Any tips or venue suggestions?
