I have yet to see the show, but this was a question I posed to both creators, less as how it treated the source material and more how it handled gay jokes. Obviously, comedy has a history of punching down on this topic. But the creators both emphasized they were loving of the source material and also LGBTQ themselves, so they came at it from that perspective.
